I found this on the USCIS instructions:

"Interim EAD. If you have not received a decision within
90 days of receipt by USCIS of a properly filed EAD
application or within 30 days of a properly filed initial EAD
application based on an asylum application filed on or after
January 4, 1995, you may obtain interim work authorization
by appearing in person at your local USCIS District Office.
You must bring proof of identity and any notices that you have
received from USCIS in connection with your application for
employment authorization."

I am only at 60 days, but I was curious if anyone has actually done this? And if so how did it go? Were you approved on the spot?

Thank everyone.

Local offices no longer issue interim EAD's. What has been happening when people cite that guideline at Infopass is - the local offices will send a request to NBC/MSC. Usually the regular EAD is forthcoming. I haven't seen anyone who obtained an interim EAD (although I am sure some have) this way - but there is still a wait involved (ie: new request to NBC + processing).
