Sorry if this has been posted before -- didn't see it. I'm not necessarily advocating any of these, just curious. If I've missed a biggie or if you're doing something else, please discuss. Thanks!

- combine trips for efficiency (I was doing this anyway)
- use public transport (MARC and Metro) for majority of commute (Columbia to Arlington)--had the following effects:
- driving, I needed to fill up 2-2.5 times weekly; using train/metro, once
- allows me to get some rest (or read Bible, or pray), impossible when driving--so much less fatiguing/stressful
- moneys otherwise allocated to Arlington parking-garage charge ($100/mo) pay 45% of MARC/Metro monthly pass
Next year, we're seriously considering moving to Arlington (rents are more expensive, but I will need less of both driving and commuting charges), Lordwilling (due to lease on apartment, can't do it till April 2009)

Well I've already been carpooling to work for the past 2 years.
I try to run more than one errand per trip, we sometimes go to the movies at a closer location (though Disney is not as nice as Universal), and we went mini golfing closer to home last weekend - though not as big as the other location we were going to go to.

I have always combined all my errands into one trip. I have started driving my car that gets better mileage when I drive to college because it's really the only long distance trips I make. I've been spending $80/month more driving to and from college 4 days a week. I registered for all my class to be two days a week in the fall because I hate driving that far.

I no longer do extra work on my days off. I stay close to home and try to save gas at least 2 days in the week. I drive 35 minutes to work and am spending about $10 a day now on gas if not more.
I am really considering a job closer to home.

I've never had a car.
Hubster, coming from the UK, has always been aware of high gas prices so has always been an advocate of public transportation....rode it as much as posssible in the UK and now that's what we do here, only occasionally using a car if we have a weekend trip planned or something.

i would happily pay 10 dollars a gallon if it meant i could avoid the constant barrage of discussion about gas prices.
it's all i hear all day at work. i turn on the radio and they're talking about. get home the tv is the same.
can we just shut the f u c k up about gas prices?!
fine, i have to spend about 20-30 dollars more each week than i did a year or two ago. if your budget is broken over 20 dollars a week then you have bigger problems. you need to fix your lifestyle and quit complaining about this.

I'm with you on the part, that people are complaining over spending $20 more a week. I'm so sick of it. No one complains at $7 for a box of cigarrettes, so stop complaining at the price of a gallon, or do something, call Exxon or Shell.
But I am
not with you on offering to pay $10 a gallon. I'm not insane.

Actually I used to smoke too. Aside from being bad for my health, when prices soared, I quit.
My budget won't break over an extra $20 a week, but it's wasteful so why shouldn't I make changes in my lifestyle? School's out for the summer, so I limit my driving and I walk to my second job (it's only about 12 blocks from my house). We did move when P was here in March to be closer to my job and closer to a public transport spot for him when he moves here.
Also I don't see that this is "complaining" about gas prices. I think this is the OP asking a question out of curiosity. I didn't see any answers in this thread that said "wahhhhhh.......gas too high .... waaaahhhhhhhhh."
Oh, add me to the "pauper crowd," mmkay?

We drive less. Combine multiple trips to store into one longer trip. Hubby turns off his a/c for a lot of his drive now, and it's so hot out! But he said it really made a difference in his gas mileage. He is smart about trying to spend less money(and overly frugal at times heh). If only "paupers" are saving their gas, then I guess we can thank them for helping with our gas crisis and not thank those who gas guzzle carelessly.

Exactly! Finally, someone who understands
I have a theory that the body can only absorb a finite amount of fat in a small amount of time. So, when I encounter a box of donuts or cookies, I eat until it's all done. I trust my body will absorb what it can and excrete out the rest. If I space it out, like my wife thinks I should, all of it will go straight to my manboobs... and I don't want that.
