I am sure this has been discussed ad naseum, but I have not been on much lately and a quick look through the forum has been unsuccessful. Has anyone driven across the border lately and if so did you need your passport? Derek is going home to visit his parents in Montreal in August and will be landing in Burlington, VT (to save $$$) and his folks are driving down from Montreal to pick him up. He has his passport, but of course his folks do not. We do have a Plan B but are hoping that you still don't need a passport to cross back and forth.

No they don't need a passport, just prove of citizenship using their birth certificate or pemanent resident card.
I believe the passport required goes into effect in 2009.
