Sorry if this has already been asked but I couldn't find the answer...

Regarding the employment verification, I did find the following:

"Basically, your employer letter should state "To whom it may concern: (first name,last name) has been employed
full-time with the XYZ Company since 200_ as a (name of your job), and is an employee in good standing with an
annual salary of $XXXX. Signed, John Doe, Supervisor (or whatever title)" The letter should be on company
letterhead."

I work for a large corporation.... can my boss sign this letter, or does it have to come from the human resources department? Might he be contacted by an official seeking to confirm the letter? Just want to give him advance warning if that's the case....

Jen a boss or the human resources department can issue the letter. I have not heard of anyone being contacted to verify the information but if they are aware of the process it should not be a total suprise if they got a call. Good luck.

I believe it just states the letter must be from your boss and lists the things they have to answer. I'm sure your boss will let you know if he can sign it or if you have an HR office, he might suggest they have to issue it. Just ask, I'm sure you'll receive answers. Sounds like either one is correct to me. Good Luck on your journey.

Human resourse wrote mine.

I wrote it up and had our division director sign it. So it doesn't matter who writes it, what matters is who signs it. I would try to have it on company letterhead, looks more official that way.

They wrote my letter for me...

Payroll wrote mine; I work for a consulting company.

I gave them the specific items listed in the instructions which were if I remember correctly:
-- compensation [yearly, hourly]
-- perm or temp
-- empl since

look in the insructions and it says faily clearly I belive.
Just tell whoever writes it to just answer those; brevity can be good.
I have not idea if there was a confirmation; I'd not be surprised, though.

My company is quite large, and they do some kind of 'automated' employment verification letter. I still think I am going to visit my local HR and get something else from them directly to have with me, just in case.

That would depend on your company policy for such things. Ask around, starting either with your supervisor.

Great... thanks everyone. I'll write the letter myself and print it on company letterhead... I'll ask my boss to sign. Otherwise he will know who to direct me to, I'm sure. Just wondered what everyone else has done...

Many companies have strict ideas about how they want to write such letters. Legal issues. Check with your boss, and then double-check with your HR rep, before doing something that could potentially get you and your boss in trouble (if he signs something that it later turns out he shouldn't have).
