"Other" on the last one because I wouldn't accept any of those changes.
Jenn!
Urban apartment dwellers here. We would move to another type of dwelling, but would ideally stay in an urban area.
KarenCee
SFH, rural

SFH, rural

Other - Unless there was NO choice whatsoever and my family's survival was at stake, I would never willingly live in the city again, either SFH or MFH.

Dang...should have included a "none of the above" choice for the last question blush.gif

Anyone else please just choose "other" on the third question to answer "none" as Platy did.

What kind of dwelling do you live in, in what type of area?
Townhouse in a suburb (pop. density is over 3,000 people per sq mile, in flyover this would be a city i suppose)

Where would you prefer to live and why?
If I could afford it, I'd stay right where I am but get a SFH in the area. But I can't afford it. My wife wants to get a SFH in the outer exurbs but I'm resistant to the idea (so far). Neither of us want to move into NJ's urban areas, primarily because it would take us very far from work (and even if we wanted to, we can't afford it).

What living situation would you willingly change to and why?
Now living in multi-family dwelling, would move to single family dwelling
Now living in low density area, would move to high density area - how dense is low density and how dense is high density, in your opinion?
Jenn!
According to Wikipedia, our city is actually a "suburban city", but it's not what one would typically think of as the suburbs. I guess it's suburban because it's outside of Boston. Pop density is 11,102.9/sq mi.

This PDF (Cities: We're Still Making Them) by the Regional Plan Association of NJ, NY and CT uses 10,000 people per sq. mile as the dividing line between suburban and urban.

Where would you prefer to live and why?
in the same house but out in the country

What living situation would you willingly change to and why?
Both of us would like to move out of the town and into a house with lotsof land around it. I was raised in Cantonements (army bases) in India and Daniel was raised on a farm. Used to having open space and greenery around us. That will have to wait till we retire though

Single fam house...in suburbs I guess. We aren't on the edge of a big city, but this isn't a small town. It's one huge area with houses everywhere--a planned community.

I'd prefer to stay in a single family house, and move to a smaller town that is the same commute to a city with good jobs.

I'd move from SFH higher density to lower density...but not rural.
CherryXS
As before:
  • apartment in suburb/exurb
  • would prefer SFH in city or suburb
  • multi-family, wish to go to SFH
Zee Bee
Currently apartment in the suburbs.

I would love to move to a condo in the city (waiting until SO moves here to figure that out).

I chose "other" for "none".
Nessa
I'm completely satisfied with our living condition. Would only change if we went back to Brazil live in a small house by the beach.

Where do you live (dwelling type, population density type)?

*I live in 6 unit apartment building in the suburbs.

Where would you prefer to live?

*I dunno. My ILs have a pretty sweet deal: A huge house with big yard with a nice view of the Weser in the middle of their 15k town. I guess I would prefer downtown in Germany and first ring suburbs in the US.

What changes would you be willing to make and why?

*I would do any of those things, living in a small town or rural area I am not very hot on. I would only do it on the request of my husband as I am familar with the area he would be refering to. I am not really all that interested on my own in living in a small town. In the US, I defintely just can't see living in a city with a population in its MSA under 500k.
Sister Fracas
Live on the 11th floor of a 220 unit apartment building in the city with a fabulous view of the lakefront. I'm very happy where we are.

When we move to the UK it will drastically change and we'll live in a single family dwelling in a small town.

SFH in the suburbs... we're well within city limits but since the population density is a hair under 3000 ppl/miČ, I put suburban.

I'd love to move to a single family house (preferably) or townhouse in a more populated area like the LA or Washington DC metro areas, but I wouldn't want to live in an urban area. (Or rural, either. But close to both.)

F1Belle
We live in a town of 1500 in a fabulous SFH. Love living in the country, as this way I room for all my beasties- 13 dogs and 10 cats. Would never want to move. star_smile.gif

Live in an apartment in the suburbs...

If money was no object, I'd love to live in London...preferably in a townhouse (but definitely don't have that kind of money laying around!!!)

I'll settle for a townhouse in the suburbs, but close to work...

What's the difference between a condo and an apartment?

Ohh I like Mag's and Platy's house. I wish I was I cat and could live with them!! tongue.gif

An apartment you rent the unit, a condo you own the unit. A townhouse is like a condo in that while you own it, it is connected to other townhomes, but it usually has multiple floors, and you own from the roof to the ground.

A builder in the Charlotte suburbs (I forget which one) is selling SFH's with condominium ownership. That is, you own the "space" inside and all fixtures but the HOA owns (and maintains) the grounds and the external facing parts of the house.

Ahhh thanks Scott!

I live in a apartment then biggrin.gif

46 sqm, one bedroom, one bathroom and located in the city center kicking.gif Totally overpriced, but I love it anyway!
tom&tata
Would love to live in apt in inner city - but my husband would not survive.
Henia
I rather live in the big city or in a rural area along the coast.
Leafgal
Currently live in a SFH in an urban area. Would love to live in either a SFH in the country but not to far from a small town, or in a small town and for sure stay close to the water.
mybackpages
Currently in a duplex in the heart of a large city (which is quite residential and green with much less traffic than the suburbs). Would be willing to move east to a smaller town, but with conditions.
Scott & Lai
We live in an eight unit apartment building in the suburbs, density just under 5,000/sq mile. We love the area, but want a SFH. I was raised in SFHs in suburban areas; Lai was raised in tiny apartments in Hong Kong, definitely high density. I don't mind visiting urban areas like that, but couldn't handle living there for long; too stressful for my tastes. I need an area with miniscule crime, no grafitti, not the concrete jungle, peaceful, neighbors kept at a respectable distance (I need more than a wall separating them from me, and nature. Other than being in an apartment, that pretty much describes what we have now.

We were living in a denser suburb before, off a major road. There was a strip mall next to our complex, with a bar right across from our bedroom window and lots of seedy characters about. I had to call the police several times with noise complaints late at night. When our contract was up, we decided to look elsewhere. Now the nearest major road is about a mile away, and we have woods with a stream outside our bedroom window smile.gif We see lots of rabbits, ducks, hummingbirds, egrets, frogs and other critters, and the whole area is much quieter. Our apartment is accessed by a stair that goes to our door and only one of our neighbors...before, there was a walkway that went around our building, so people were always stomping past our windows; not very private or quiet at all. Now it is so much more peaceful; it is a balm to the soul. Plus, we have most anything we could want as far as shopping areas and restaurants very nearby; pick an ethnic cuisine, we've got one or more representatives within a few minutes from us.

As for where I'd move, I could see going to a small town, close enough to a larger area for shopping/entertainment purposes, but far enough out to avoid the negatives of urban areas. Ideally, that would be when we retire (if we are ever actually able to), so that we wouldn't have to worry about commuting to work. Someplace within an hour or so of our church would be best. And I really want to be in a SFH. I want the privacy that comes with that, plus I worry about things like fire. In a SFH, you have far more control over that, if you do something stupid, you're the only one to blame, and generally your neighbors' homes aren't threatened, depending of course on how close other homes are to you and if you have lots of brush/trees close by. In an apartment or townhome, you can be very responsible, but if your neighbor isn't and starts a fire, you both are screwed.

No way in he!! would I move to an urban area.
warriorprincess
We live in a gated community.
VipulandJamie
We live in a 2 bedroom family/graduate apartment associated with the university that Vipul is going to. It's just the 2 of us right now.
raymaga
We live in a single family home in a small town outside of Seattle, WA. We have a very large corner lot and for now, the yard work is managable, but when we retire (in about 9 years), I'd like to move to either a townhouse or condo.
DairyFarmer
Whilst I am away from John I live in a share apartment with two others. High density and urban.

When I go back to John it will be SFH in a rural setting. Outside a small city.
krakatoa
We live in an in-law apartment in the suburbs to which I am really appreciative about. Lake Chabot is just a 5-minute walk from the house itself. I need to commune with nature. tongue.gif I hated the city life although I appreciate the vibrant areas of San Francisco. We are looking at several SFH's right now but we're inclined to buy a ranch house in the bay area (we want ample space if our finances would allow it). It would be difficult for me to live in a multi-level apartment/condo though I had lived in several apartments and condos back in my country, when I was in college and while working in the city. I would love us some peace and quiet, and our privacy.
