If by some chance you are not approved within a year you will want to make an InfoPass appointment to go to your Local Office to request an I-551 stamp in your passport. This does happen as it sometimes it takes over a year to be approved. After your NOA extension expires, this is your only evidence of legal status which you are required to have, by law. This happens occasionally, that a case takes over a year, but it's rare. Local Offices will not give an I-551 stamp is you have another type of evidence of status (ie, expired Green Card + extension letter).

This information is incorrect. We got a I-551 stamp in my wifes passport while her extension letter was valid (it still is).

Is this correct:
my conditional green card was expired on 12/20/2008? Or do you mean 2007?

I thought it was a year from the date your 2-yr card expired, because of the wording on the physical letter. But I could very well be wrong!! Someone who knows for sure, please pitch in.

Good Luck!

Yes, I was wondering about the date too - assume its typo in OP's post?

And I apologize, my previous post was wrong. Its one year after the expiration of your original green card date. I looked it up in the Adjudicator's Manual on the USCIS website.

Sorry about that.

" Parallel to the procedures for processing Form I-751 , Petition to Remove Conditions on Residence, upon receipt of Form I-829, the service center director shall issue the conditional resident a fee receipt notice on Form I-797 that includes the following paragraph:

Your Permanent Resident Card (Form I-551), also known as a “green card,” is extended one (1) year – employment and travel is authorized during this extension. Processing your petition for removal of conditions will require a minimum of one hundred and twenty (120) days. Thirty (30) days before the expiration of this extension, if you have not been notified by USCIS of a decision on your petition, please contact the field office nearest to where you are living for further documentation for employment and/o r travel purposes.

Obviously you have the letter and should have read the above paragraph on it. I haven't applied yet, so I actually haven't seen the letter you get.

Again I apologize...

Wannabe_Texan, many thanks for going to the source!

The OP may or may not have received the physical letter yet. What is posted looks like the on-line status update.
