Full Version: Americans : How many hours do you work a week?

I am just curious to see how many hours a week my fellow Americans work to make a living here. If you work more than 41 hours a week, please give the typical amount of hours you work.

I work anywhere from 40-45 hours a week.

In any given two-week pay period, I always work at least 81 and usually less than 85 hours. Usually nearly all the hours over 40 are in the same week, that's the way it tends to go for me. I also tend to work through my lunch and sometimes come in early, but rarely have to stay late.

My old job was 35 hours a week, and we got comp time (at time and a half!) for working more. Ah, those were the days! (Of course, they also paid me a lot less and the commute was a lot longer.)

My husband works 25 hours a week, but that was a choice we made, for him to find something less than full time.

I answered for my hubby.. he works about 40 hours a week at his current job.. his last job he worked anywhere from 40 to 50 hours a week...

I work about 50 a week at paying jobs. I also make cards and scrapbooks to sell. I call that a hobby, though.

It used to be worse. Before Andre got a job, I worked about 70. It sucked.

I'm looking to go down to just 40 within this year.

el zippo for me, my hubby works more than 40, but he gets every other Friday off, so it evens out. smile.gif

I work 40 hrs. a week. Sucks!

when my hubby was on swing shift he used to work almost 60 to 75 hours a week.... he was doing that when I first moved here.. it was horrible.. I was so happy when he got day shift...
charles!
40 hours but when we have overtime/shift work, it's 96. averages out to about 45 a week throughout the year.

I was going to say I work 24/7 with a baby but didn't because my husband helps me a lot on the weekends(and when he gets home from work) so I get some time off kind of. tongue.gif Some husbands don't help their wives at all even on the weekends. They think they just have to work 40 hours and then do nothing to help at home and the wife has to work 24/7 being a mom without ever being able to clock out. no0pb.gif And if the wife also works and still has to be the only one taking care of the baby at home, I find it so wrong. So I guess I am thankful for a helpful hubby who enjoys being around and doing things for Kavi.

My presant job is with a forty hour guarantee, I average sixty to seventy hours pr week. I had rather be at work, than be at home alone!!! yes.gif

I teach and teachers work a lot of hours...and not always in the classroom or school building. Most times we bring home work we don't have time to do at school. I chose 41+ hours.
Andy-n-Maricar
I usually work 60 to 65 hours per week. Even though the overtime is great it does get to be a pain at times. I can't remember the last time I worked 40 hours or less a week.
KitEEgirl
During normal time 45 hours a week..

Twice a year I have a project installation and then it's about 75 hours/week for 3 weeks...

What do you do if you don't mind me asking? That's a lot of time spent at work.

True story. Hence why I'm divorced and getting remarried smile.gif

Between planning, actual teaching, grading, leading the department and doing administrative work, dealing with parents and acting as a go-between for my teachers and the principals and deans, plus tutoring and an outside tutoring job I work about 60 hours a week (including weekends). But I'm off from the main teaching gig from June 13 to August 25, so my hours decrease. After P gets here and starts working I will quit the outside tutoring job and will eventually (hopefully) give up the department head position and go part time....to expand our family.

My job follows me just about 24/7, I own the company!!!!!

My husband's typical work hours each week is 66-70.

Usually I work between 40 to 50 hours depending on the amount of work I receive in the week wacko.gif
palilover
I average around 50 hours weekly. OT is great, but I'm quickly becoming burnt out. I don't think though that the visa process helps much in those regards, lol When habibi comes back (hopefully soon), I will cut back to 40.

Yup...same scenario here. This is only ONE of the reasons I'm divorced and now remarried. I do know that if Joel and I were to ever have a baby together that he would want to help me, even with me staying home to be a full time mommy.

I've finally quit my PT tutoring job too...even though it was only a few extra hours a week, the mental stress of teaching all day, then teaching some more after school, going home and helping our daughter with homework, and THEN being wifey and mommy....BLEH! Joel helps me plenty it's just...well...I just couldn't do it anymore. Anyone that teaches will understand. wacko.gif

Hee hee. It's only one of the reasons for my divorce too smile.gif But yeah, Patrick and I have already decided that if we have a baby that I will have to go part time at work. Not only does he fully support me being at home, but also I'm honestly too old to do what I did when my children were younger. I mean, I'm only 36, but sometimes that feels ancient when you have worked a full day like you just described and think about doing half that and having a newborn. What am I thinking?!?!

40 and that's too much. Sometimes a few more if I want to take my time. (I set my own pace and schedule.) I remember when I was young (6th grade) and they predicted, "In the future, the average work week will be 24 to 32 hours. We will work far more efficiently and devote more time to family and leisure." That would have been very nice. yes.gif

Isn't that the way it is in many European countries? Ah if only it could spread here.....

Ahh, that was here... In this country. And I do not subscribe to "work to be free". Work is only for money. My family time is to be free and we need more of it in this far too slave like environment. Europe gets it far more: longer holidays, less working hours, and more emphasis on family.

yes Kazan. you are very right. When I said "work to be free", I was speaking primarily of the actual environment, not a particular personal choice. I envy Europe for all its vacation and holiday days. I think in much of Europe, you get maybe a month vacation time per year! Sometimes companies give that much here, but not all at once though!! And certainly not in your first year. Even the McDonalds employees in england get a free month's vacation......sometimes I wish I could have a visajourney to Europe....of course I'd have to find a way to take my husband with me too. no fun having all thsoe benefits of living in Europe if he's not with me;)

Same here. I guess we are "scheduled" for about 38.75 hours a week, but with grading papers, creating tests, planning, shopping, etc. adds up to a lot more, and over weekends for me too.
I also work at night a couple days a week, teaching ESOL to adults, so I voted 41+.

Now that it's the summer I'm teaching adults basically full time - 30 hours a week. I like the job, the pay is not bad, and hubby gets a good discount.
