A foreigner can't own land in Viet Nam. I have wondered whether the Spouse gives up their right or if you are married there, like Thuy and I were, if you could then.
The laws in Vietnam about land ownership are changing. My understanding is that once a Vietnamese citizen leaves the country "for good", they lose the right to own land. However they seem to be changing that law. Here's the latest change in the law.

Also in Vietnam, it appears that it's ok to give someone in your fiancee's family enough money to buy property and then rent to you.
