From what I have seen around the forums the answer is not clean cut. Some seem to allow it, others do not. I am planning on going to my wifes interview in Tokyo but I am not sure if they will let me be in the room with her during the interview or if I will just have to wait in the waiting room. Though I have heard from other people that went with their spouses (at Tokyo) that they were allowed to stay together the whole time. I would suggest finding someone who has done this at your consulate or call the consulate yourself and ask. Also, about the flying back together, some consulates do not issue the entry visa to you right after the interview. Instead they will take your husbands passport and mail it back to him with the visa in it. This is the way its done in Japan anyway.

Hope this helps.
