Well Hitchooo.. good question. I had been studying Islam for many years (military Intel) and always had a muslimah friend around me different ones throughout my life but always had at least one.

I was raised catholic where we were taught to pray to Mother Mary and ask forgiveness from a Priest. (both human) I started questioning that at quite a young age.

There is a scripture in the old testment (i am paraphrasing here so bare with me) God said worship noone but your GOD..... how do we find it acceptable to worship a man? I know we are to believe he is God on earth (Jesus pbuh) but even Jesus (pbuh) said to Pontius pilate when he was asked "Are You God?" Jesus replied you said that not I...

When Jesus was crucified (still makes me feel so sad) he looked to the heavens and asked "Why have you forsaken me?"

These are a few that lead me away from worshiping Jesus as God on earth... how can and why would he say those things if he was God????

Anyway, I know this is a very "hot" topic and I dont' mean to start a disagreement but these are what I found to cause more questions about my deen... started reading more about Islam and the Qu'ran and asked tons of questions to my husband (which wasn't my husband at the time).

And Hamdolah after many many years... said my shahadah in December last year.

Salam

im proud of you , you got to be muslim through your reading and exploring,. inshallah it wont start a disagreement as we specifically pointing out the reaons of being muslim , if it were because of your previous religion or because of something in Islam .
and dear i assure my wife reads bible for me alot , i ask her too . Bible has many values and ideals. that my wife itself was surprised it was in bible , bible insists on modesty , on the great importance of the family life, i was even surpised that it sounded more strict regarding the relation between men and women . the point is , Jesus gave many parables. that i can say some claimed jesus said he was a god through one of these parables like ,,if you see me you see father , i dont remember it exactly , . just cant get it .

but Dear , we can back to Islam , and say whats the great about Islam , and how it affected the various sides of your life.
Thank you

I'm not sure how many of your are aware of sunnipath.com but they have specials for new muslims and some of the courses are actually free for new muslims. I have taken a few courses from them and find them to be very very informative and easy to do if your schedule is hectic.

This is the link describing the discount (#7) http://www.sunnipath.com/Academy/Online/In...on/tuition.aspx

And although the course has already started for this semester here is a good one for newbies that will be run again :

I was never one to wear a LOT of makeup but I did get into it a little bit and would wear mascara, under eye concealer, blush and lipstick. Now I wear nothing mainly because I'm lazy but also because doing wudu 5 times a day tends to wear on you if you're constantly reapplying, you know?

Now I just do undereye concealer if I remember to but hubby could care less about that. Not to mention my hair is always in a ponytail since who's gonna spend the time making their hair look good when they're constantly throwing hijab on going in and out of the house??? He could care less about that too and let me tell you why...he's used to it. He grew up with two sisters and knows what women look like without makeup and fru fru hair.

I would be lying if I said I didn't go through a mourning stage with the hair products and occasional makeup but I think I'm over that now. Once you get used to it your perception is like on a whole new level, you know? Now I look at the women here at work and outside of work who spend a lot of time in the bathroom freshening up their hair and makeup and I think for what?

It's the inside of you that counts both to God and to your husband. (or it should be that way imho anyways). I'd rather have my soul shining from salat and making dua and giving zakat and not wear makeup or do my hair up than look perfect on the outside and empty on the inside.

Seriously it is a freeing feeling once you get over the mourning of what used to be. Hang in there. rose.gif

very well stated

on another note:
I have found myself feeling guilty every time I see a muslima who is covered properly and I'm not. I really feel that I need to work on that. soooooooooooooooooooo I went to an islamwear store and bought some gauntlets to cover my forearms/wrists. I've worn them the last 2 days and honestly...I LOVE THEM!!!
The only thing I don't like with the pair i have on today is that the wrists are a little tight so I think I'll make some thumb holes and they'll be just right. They actually keep me cooler. (yes i'm admitting it to those of u who i thought were lying when u said that covering was actually cooler....u were right). Anyway, I'll try this for a while and ensha'allah I can work my way up to hijab soon.

As a non-muslim married to a muslim, I have few innocent questions if you ladies will please help me out. My husband tried explaining to me, but i just don't understand) Is there something in the Qu'ran that specifically states woman cannot where make-up? I'm a bit puzzled reading about the ladies that do not wear make-up because when I lived in Egypt many woman wore make-up. I would always comment to my husband how beautiful the faces of some of the woman looked in their colorful hijabs. I love how they do their eyes with the kohl too. My husband has never mentioned anything to me regarding my make-up and I really like to play up my eyes and I have to wear lipstick, although I chose to wear light colored lipstick. Is a lighter color lipstick allowed? Like a more fleshlike color? I apologize if my question is stupid, I just really want to know. Thanks ladies!

Amal, can you please show a picture of these gauntlets? I keep thinking of something from the midevil times when I think of a gauntlet. blush.gif

Muslim women can wear makeup but if they pray all 5 times a day they probably have to make wudu and that means they have to wash their face with water. Reapplying makeup sucks when u have to do it 5 times a day..ugggg.

I'm at work so i can't post any pix but maybe one of mah girls can post one smile.gif

Waterproof makeup smile.gif I actually love some of the islamic clothing styles. I bought so many tops and dresses when I was in Egypt. I must say that's the one thing I like about Egypt. You can go out shopping and not have to worry about seeing everyones crack hanging out of their pants or the breasts about to pop out of their shirts. I must say that Americans need to learn about modesty.

I tend to sweat and have extra oil under my eyes. I've been using a waterprrof undereye concealer by Mayelline that I love! For blush I use Blushsense. That stays on too! I also use an eyeliner by Lancome that stays on from the time I put it on, till I take it off. I can't even wash that off, I have to use eye makeup remover. I supposed when I put my make-up on, I want it to stay on.
Alhamdulillah
I've always been the type to wear makeup and nail polish and do my hair up and stuff and that hasn't really changed since embracing Islam.... I still like all that stuff. I'm still a woman after all and I like to fix myself up for my hubby star_smile.gif
I don't wear nail polish anymore since you can't remove it easily to make wudu but I do stain my nails with henna, keep my hair colored, wear makeup and so on but I have toned down the makeup a lot. I wear kohl, eyeshadow and powder regularly unless it's hot and I'll wear lipstick around the house but I'll wipe it off if I'm going out. I wear a light shade of eyeshadow and apply a thin layer of kohl so it's not too obvious if I happen to go out. The kohl stays with you thru wudu but I have to reapply the powder. I'll also wear perfume around the house but again, not if I'm going out.

Muslim women are allowed to decorate themselves with nice clothes, makeup, perfume, henna (not permanent tattoos) and make their hair look attractive for their husbands and around other close male relatives..... we're just not allowed to show that beauty to others outside of that little circle.

What about clear lip gloss - something very light, not noticeable...still makes you feel like a woman. My husband always says to me when I have on just mascara and light lipstick - Te Pintaste? Which means you painted yourself??? I'm like...it's nothing. Makes me feel good that he's a little jealous. hehe

What I really want to know is if there is a place I can order those sleeves online.

I have some, but they are white and I wear them 5 days a week to work and they are slowly turning a greyish color and it's been almost 1 yr. I'm about to switch jobs so maby I could get another 2 white ones and some colored for when I have to wear office clothes and business suites (wearing a chef's uniform right now)

Polar -I'd try soaking them in some bleach and then wash them with some baking soda - should bring the color back.

Try to find them on ebay - they have everything!

What I'm understanding by "waterproof makeup" is that it doesn't wash off with water but it doesn't actually block the water from getting to the skin, is that correct? I don't understand how that would affect your wudu unless it prevents the water from reaching the skin/area like nail polish does but I could be wrong. You'd still have to wash your face but shouldn't have to remove it completely. Kohl is pretty water prood and stays on thru many washings and it's not haraam for women to wear that.

Once again I'm a bit confused. So you're not supposed to look pretty as a women when you go out in public? I guess I'm reverse. I don't wear make-up at home because I don't see the need and I wear make-up in public so I don't scare the neighbors.

I have those sleeve thingies and wore them once. I hate them!!! They're so thick and hot and yukkie imho. Instead one time in Target I found long sleeved tshirts that are basically as thin as gauze and that is what I wear underneath things that are sleeveless or short sleeved. for example today I am wearing pants, the long sleeved gauze-like t-shirt and a spaghetti strapped coral cotton dress that comes down to the knees with an Oleg Cassini (sp?) silk scarf that has different shades of coral and a coral under thingie that hides the hair in front. It's my favorite outfit for the summer! kicking.gif

nope u still have to wash ur face coz its exposed to the elements. yeah ur feets are fine if u've been wearing socks and have not gotten them dirty (aka going outside sock footed etc).

Ah well, I dont' wear makeup anyway - was just curious wink.gif

What I really want to know is if there is a place I can order those sleeves online.

I have some, but they are white and I wear them 5 days a week to work and they are slowly turning a greyish color and it's been almost 1 yr. I'm about to switch jobs so maby I could get another 2 white ones and some colored for when I have to wear office clothes and business suites (wearing a chef's uniform right now)

U can prolly find'em cheaper than I got mine. Mine were 5 dollars for 2 pair. There's a shop about what...10 or 15 minutes from my place and I'm all sortsa happy to have been led to it via VP. Thanks

I'm sure u can gettem online but can't remember where exactly. Mine go up to the elbows, not all the way up the arm.

If she gave them to you for 2/$5 that's really a pretty awesome price and you're not likely to find them any cheaper on the internet unless you can find someone selling them used or in lots or something.
This Ebay store has them Crescent City Egypt and you can find them on pretty much any Islamic clothing website under accessories inshallah.
If they're too expensive with shipping at those sites maybe Amal or I could pick them up for the price she got them for here and mail them to you inshallah.

No, the point of modesty in dress is not to look beautiful for non-related men.

I want to look good for my husband regardless of the location. If I go out with my husband without my make-up I'm sure my husband will be 50 feet away from me! jest.gif I would think that a man would want their wife to look good when he's out with her.

I mostly see them for $5 a pair in a million colors. But when they are on sale (rarely white or black on sale) the prices are cut in half. They look uncomfortable, I've never tried one on.

that's right Alhamdulillah. The only ppl that *need* to see u all "purtiefied" is ur family and especially ur husband since he's the one that gets the joy of looking at you without u being fully covered. Think of it this way... what sense does it make to get beautiful for the world and make ur husband look at you looking like a horses butt? (disclaimer: I wasn't aiming that phrase towards anyone here or insinuating that any of us look like an actual horses butt)
To me it makes more sense to be appealing to ur husband and less appealing to the outside world since u want ur husband to be attracted to u and not anyone else...right?

eta: in islam that is one of the reasons a woman is to cover. It hides her beauty (or the lack thereof) from everyone so they don't know what u look like. this preserves you for only your husband. Does that make sense?

My thought is this. I want my husband to be proud that I am his wife. If I were to go out with no make-up and didn't dress nice I can see people saying my husband is with a ugly woman. When I make myself look nice (and I do dress very modest and I don't wear a lot of make-up) it's not that I want other men to look at me, but it's that I want them to think my husband has a nice looking wife.

Not mine. He doesn't want other men looking at me or flirting with me nor does he have any desire to show me off like I'm on display. He's quite jealous and protective of me.
I also don't consider myself "ugly" without makeup so it's not like when I go out with him he's with some kind of hideous monster wacko.gif Makeup, hair color and hair bows are just that little something extra to make me feel like a princess for my prince biggrin.gif

This is very interesting to read about your lives and how you all found the path you love to live. I have too many thoughts and that kinda messes up the whole faith thing, but I don’t wear makeup, I used to, it has nothing to do with God or anybody, I am just plain lazy. I never understood the hair thing, hair is a big turn off to me, I love to have my hair, but I also have some kind of phobia, I can’t stand to see hair on the floor, my clothes, anywhere. Not sure when this happened, but it is like an OCD thing I have. When I cook I have to be super clean, this means I inspect my clothes, make sure that when I dress my hair is all tied up, and that I am not in danger of some of it falling. As far as dressing respectable I agree, but not for any religious reasons, I just don’t like to show my not so perfect body. I do have to say if I looked like a super model I would dress with fewer clothes. Lol I grew up with a mother that thinks it is horrific to leave the house with out your make-up and dressed nicely, she calls me her hippie child, cause clothes are not something I even care about, as long as it is comfortable and looks half way decent I am cool. I think a man should control himself period, they are not wild animals, they should be big boys and control their self’s. Just because I see a half naked man does not give me permission to go and touch him, I do have common sense. Sure Brad Pitt is a hottie, but I think I have enough self-control to not jump on him, and if I don’t I need some serious therapy, that goes for men also. One thing about the Middle East is that a woman is only half the worth of a man, which really doesn’t sit well with me. Sounds like some men got together and made that up, what a concept. What does Islam say about the dinosaurs? Just curious, my first husband believed that man and dinosaurs lived together like the Flintstones. wacko.gif We also have some fundamental Christians that have places that show dinosaurs and man living together. I find that a little crazy really, kind of creepy.

CrazyinEgypt- ofcourse u wdnt let urself go out with ur husband looking messy lol.... i dress modestly; But not UGLY lol i make sure colors of what im wearing match n that they r clean n its how my carry urself that makes the impression on ppl really.

Ganjagirl- Allah says in the quran that He has created all things that we know of n that we dont know of.... they re just like any other creation.....
Just for info; i never felt i was half worth of a man, al hamdulillah i ve always had equal opportunities n my religion never got in my way n it always opened so many roads for me to achieve my goals. Other countries make it difficult on women out of tradition and cultural beliefs IMO.
Ganja_Girl
Thanks for answering, like I said before I am super clean and my clothes match, but to be dead honest I could live in my night gown forever, and not the sexy kind of night gown either. wacko.gif

im always wondering why here in USA where the pressure or culture or tradition isnt so dogmatic why does women feel the need to be extremely modest or why does the husbands demand that? more often do I see the muslim women who come shopping with the 5 or 6 or so children all dressed head to toe in dark color and face mostly hidden followed by a husband wearing shorts, t shirt and flip flops going grocery shopping? Sure modesty is the best way to go but really is it that necessary for all that ? It brings more of the wrong kind of attention to them by looks, stares, and questions than anything.
I work with alot of muslim women and most all but not all dress with the head covering and long sleeves which to me is perfectly modest and they get questioned by the total covered (hands, feet, face) ladies about why they dont do that... whats the point ? why the question as to why my muslim co workers choose not to dress that extreme? I even had one of the above mentioned ladies ask me why I wore gloves over my hands and if it was for religious reasons...

just my thought and questions... rose.gif

In Islam any step u take for the sake of Allah is counted and Allah will reward u for it... so some women do more with the intention of pleasing their Lord.

You know I used to think the same too until my husband explained to me how proud he was to have a women that didn't do those things for others.... he prefers me to not wear makeup and wear hijab cause I am only for him. If anyone thinks I am pretty or not is none of their concern nor should that even be a relevance. My husband loves when I put lipstick on and do my hair and face just for him. And loves it even more when he sees me taking it off before we would go out.

Talk to your husband is the best thing I can suggest. What makes mine happy won't necesarily make yours happy.

Also, found some blistex chapstick feels like lipstick but no color or shine. hehe Hamdolah star_smile.gif
