Poiteen
So I'm starting another shipping thread. I'm going to try and summarise the info in the 2 very good previous threads, and hopefully get a follow up on the companies that the people decided to go with.

Here are the threads:
zoobuffalo's very helpful thread
Another UK shipping thread

Now I know that companies will vary in value for money depending on how much your sending but I thought I'd gather up all the companies that have been mentioned anyway, just for handiness...
Companies mentioned:
Excess Baggage: Good reviews all around from LOADS of VJer's, including ElmcityMaven, KikiDoug, tom_q, , pricing geared towards a few boxes, probably not the best if you have a containers worth of stuff, was cheaper than John Mason for jpkeswim.
Doree Bonner: Ladynara used them, but didn't get any final feedback, zoobuffalo got a quote but didn't go with them
John Mason: zoobuffalo's eventual choice, don't know if she's still happy with their service
UPakWeShip: Redkitty using them for the 2nd time - happy customer!
Allied Pickfords: Lansbury is a happy customer, KiKiDoug sent a full container with them and I believe StP has her stuff en route with them, and is ahead of schedule for delivery!!!
Move Me: zoobuffalo's quote was much higher than others
Sterling International: seemed even more expensive than Move Me for zoobuffalo
Atlantic International: Sunnybear is a happy customer
Crown Relocations: StP's friends recommendation
Anglo Pacific: gave a good quote to StP, but has had at least one bad report: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=108798, but has also had good reports elsewhere

Now, I'm wondering if anyone has any experience of All Freight?
I have requested a quote from them so I'll let you know how it goes, but their excess baggage prices look way cheaper than, well, Excess Baggage.
Poiteen
Seven Seas Worldwide are the first company I have come across that will actually give you a proper quote online. Fill in the boxes you want and click quote. Then you can play around with the boxes you want to bring, and update the quote. They seem to be pretty reasonable too.
Mark and Hannah
I just thought I'd add that it's worked out cheaper for me to POST items via surface mail than to use Excess Baggage to ship them. Yes that means they're not insured but as it's personal items they cannot really be replaced anyway.

Excess Baggage quoted me £180.40 and it's cost me around £90 to post the same items.

I know that won't be much use to most people, but if you only have a few things that you want to ship but can't cram it all into 2 bags due to space and weight restrictions, and you don't have a friend coming over for the wedding who can lend you the use of a suitcase - posting it in small 2kg or less packages is an option. I've posted items such as CDs, books, ornaments, old diaries, etc.
Jeraly
Ooh - can we sticky this? I'm going to PM Ewok maybe... biggrin.gif I bookmarked most of the places already but it is soo useful to have it here as well smile.gif Especially if we can get reviews from people smile.gif
Eli the Barrowboy
Seven Seas are half the price of excess baggage for me ...

Can't be arsed bringing a bike by airplane, plus the dog ... struggles ....
Poiteen
yup, seven seas are cheap, but All Freight are still the cheapest for me. Thing is they only do Door to Port for LA. I'm not sure I'd mind picking it up from the port tho, should only be maybe 5 or 6 boxes. For a significant saving, it might be worth it.
Poiteen
Decided I'd give good old PSS a call, since they seem to be the sole advertisers on this website.

They have an ad in TNT magazine for NZ/Aus: 3 teacartons for £135 and £25 for additional cartons. sounds amazing. Unfortunatley their prices for the US were not the same. £169 for the first teacarton and £50 for each after that. So 6 boxes would be £419. Shockingly their website told me it would be £719. They should sort that out.

Excess baggage would be £530, and Seven seas are £424 for 6 boxes,

Still not better than All Freight, which are £85 for the first, and £45 there after. So 6 boxes would be £310.
Poiteen
Just called Global Moves, they quoted £430 for my standard question of 6 boxes, 4 teacartons and 2 book boxes, door to door, London to LA. For the record the guy I spoke with was very knowledgable and was really nice and helpful in a relaxed non-pushy-salesperson kind of way,
NickyMcMillan
I'm with you Mark and Hannah! I'm posting a keyboard & a couple other things via parcel force for £45 with insurance. Way cheaper than any of the quotes I've seen.

The rest of my stuff I have family coming out who are bringing out a bag for me.
Alex & Rachel
Out of curiosity, how are people judging what about of space/how many boxes they will require? Everything I am thinking of shipping is going to be small. I am also wondering if I should be taking into consideration weight. I know a lot of places quote by volume, but a box of books can get heavy very quickly.
Poiteen
well i would have to first post it to my family in Ireland, so it works out cheaper for me to send it straight from here. I don't really have anywhere in London I could leave stuff, space is too much of a premium!
Poiteen
Companies that deal in full relocations generally deal with volumetric weight.

The amount of stuff that I'm looking at is really just excess baggage. Some of the companies have pricing scales based on their standard boxes, but the final price will usually also be charged by volume.

Air freight is charged by weight.
Poiteen
A funny thing happened. I got an email from the helpful guy that I spoke to from Global Moves, and the company was Anglo Pacific!!! weird.
Alex & Rachel
Thank you for this thread and the quotes you are giving us, by the way, it is all very helpful. smile.gif

Poiteen
Noticed a deal on All Freights website, £250 for 8 teacrates Door to port in LA. I sincerely doubt I'd get a better deal elsewhere. That's it, I'm sick of shipping companies. Going with them.

They've let me switch 2 of the boxes for book boxes too. kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif
Jeraly
Rachel - I'm using banana boxes to store things I want to keep in while I clear out the other stuff I don't want. Once I have sold/disposed of the stuff I don't want, I am going to go through those boxes again for one last blitz/clearout then I am going to move them down to the garage and call people out for quotes - they will prolly re-pack everything but it will all be contained for them to give me a more accurate estimate smile.gif

At least that is how I have it all working in my mind laughing.gif
Poiteen
Rachel - no more updates from me now, I'll have to let Jeraly take over.

Well, I'll come back and give a review of their services when all my stuff gets there, but that seems like a lifetime away.

Aly - I'm having my boxes dropped around tomorrow, because i'm off work, and it's easiest. I've told them that I won't be moving for 2 months, and it's fine. So I don't have to pack and then re-pack all over again.
Jeraly
Oh cool! I know some places pack themselves though - am sure that would be kinda easier but who knows... it's all just up in the air still! Daisy is still causing me hassle though!!

Another shipping thread? But I'm still trying to determine whether or not there is an official February filers thread! devil.gif
Slightly Bonkers
For Irish people, (sorry if its already mentioned)

Could check out Book Post from An Post
Only works for books but worked for me on a couple of my other moves
And already have a few boxes to send out for this one
Dunno how it compares to the other companies ...

Out of curiosity what charges are you going to incur at the LA end?
Poiteen
hey lansbury, they said that the port handling fees and customs charges should be between £30-£50. Still a good deal by my calculations!

Yes indeed. I didn't have any idea what the landing fees might have been but certainly that way of doing it seems very worth while to anyone like yourself who is able to collect their stuff from the shippers.
coatsy
I've been looking at various shipping options and whilst the fees themselves are not huge insurance can almost double the cost in some instances
I have about 600+ DVDs to ship as well as a lot of IT equipment meaning I need about £10000 coverage, will cost me over 500 quid with most the shippers (ouch)

got a good mind to buy some Peli cases and pay for some extra baggage with BA
as I am looking to fly Club world I get 3 bags to begin with, and extra bags are only £60 when booked online, at 32KG each thats a fair percentage of my bulky stuff I can ship (IT books, monitors in peli cases, A/V gear in peli cases etc) and with my REI XXL Duffels I can get a few pelis per bag smile.gif

Thats the option I am looking at at present, and then just ship the stuff that really wont fit anywhere else (although the value will of dropped significantly if I can get my monitors and AV gear in my bags
Jeraly
Is insurance not included in the shipping price then? I assumed it would be - I will have to make sure I ask ><
Poiteen
the people I've asked said that it's 5% of the total value of the stuff you're sending. For me that will not be as much as it will be for coatsy no0pb.gif blush.gif
Jeraly
Yeah - mine isn't of any real high commercial value smile.gif

Also - trying to get this thread stickied but can only have four sticky threads in one forum - any ideas on which one to change? Or leave this one unsticky? What do you think?
Poiteen
Well, it may be because it's of no interest to me, but maybe the passport thread? It seems that thread might be better as a wiki entry. It's some pretty static info, rather than say medical reviews.

Also as the old police certs fade from memory, and the HPV is not a shock, there may come a time it's not needed as a sticky either
Jeraly
Yeah - I must say those are the two in my mind as well - but the passport one has been used recently so maybe not? I was quite happy to let the HPV one go - people coming up for interviews now should have had the info long enough for it to not be a total shock biggrin.gif

And the passport one could be a wiki - hadn't thought of that smile.gif
elmcitymaven
I'd ditch the passport one. A lot of the info at the beginning is out of date anyway, and you need to hunt to find the up-to-date stuff. A wiki entry would be good -- Poiteen, you're the wiki woman -- I say wiki away!
Jeraly
laughing.gif Oh dear - P is getting a bit of a rep laughing.gif
Glyn and Kathy
Well, it looks like Glyn and I will be going with Upakweship. We got a quote for £585 door to door for 55 cubic feet worth of boxes and fishing gear. We got another quote for the same amount of things from the ones that advertise on here for £985.00 blink.gif . So they are coming next Thursday...I will be so glad when that is done.
Jeraly
This is going to sound really weird, but how much is 55 cubic feet in dimensions? I'm trying to figure mine out!!
Jeraly
Ok I worked mine out so scrap that - it's just over 2ft x 2.5ft x 4ft - so by my reckoning that is just over 20cuft... That's not so bad biggrin.gif I feel really happy now!
debbylyn
Barry called for quotes from 3 of the shipping companies listed in this thread...Excess Baggage, Alllied Pickfords, and Upak We Ship....for his 19 boxes appr. 98 cuft, he received quotes of £855 from excess baggage, £750 from Allied and £650 from Upak we ship...that is door to door they are providing packing for some odd sized pieces also....his quote is good for 3 months...

So it's U Pak We Ship for us!
Glyn and Kathy
They just picked up our things earlier today. The man was a bit rough looking but he was nice enough. He actually thought our quote was for £500.00 and I was too honest and said...no £585.00. Glyn was ready to kick me. Next to go is the cats and ourselves on Wednesday. I am so excited...but so tired and stressed at the same time.
Jeraly
I get to call shipping companies today so will let you all know how I get on smile.gif
Jeraly
This is what I got from UPakWeShip:

QUOTE
Our price to supply boxes measuring 64x38x42 cm with a weight limit of 40kilos per carton on a door to door service £190 for the 1st carton and £50 each additional plus collection from Bristol £40.
Poiteen
I'd say you can get better that that! £190 seems steep
Jeraly
Yeah - it looks like around £580 for the lot from my guestimation but from what I have seen here it seems a tad on the pricey side... part of me is wishing I had arranged for quotes earlier though... >< Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I reckon I have no more than 30 cubic feet - I've budgeted for £500 but what do you all reckon sounds like a good price for that?
Poiteen
well I'm just shipping boxes, not furniture or anything, but seven seas and all freight were the cheapest for me.

All freight had a great deal, 8 boxes for 250 quid, but I'm packing myself, and picking up at the port. I think the deal was for london only, but even before their deal they were the cheapest for me - door to port. They didn't do door to door in the LA area. The cheapest was seven seas door to door.
psiprez
Ugh! We have no idea where to start as far as this shipping thing goes. This has turned out to be the most stressful part of the whole K-1 process for us. sad.gif

Since I am here in the US, I of course can be of little help to him as far as packing and making arrangements go. Neither of us has ever made a big move, and don't know anyone who has, so we really have no clue what to do. It would be nice to have some knowledge here, to 'gently encourage' him in the right direction.

He is so stressed out that he refuses to make any definite plans for when he will arrive. Of course, my employer needs to know SOON when I need to have off for his arrival, the wedding, the so-called honeymoon etc. He has had this whole past week off from work, and as far as I can tell, all he did was sort through and shred one pile of papers. At this rate, our K-1, which will have not even received yet, will expire before he is anywhere near packed (I kid you not).

So at the risk of sounding incredibly stupid, let me clarify... he needs to get his belongings sorted and pre-packed, as to estimate the amount and size to be shipped (in # of boxes and cu. feet?) before contacting a shipping agent for estimates? How far in advance of his move date should he do this?

Should he contact one now, so that he can get boxes from them? Or do you use your own boxes and stuff?

What are some of the things he should look for in a shipping agent?
Since I live very near the NYC airports, is shipping to port a good option to save money, or is it not worth the hassle?
Customs? Shipping dates? Regulations? I have no clue.

If someone could just outline what needs to happen in the shipping process, that would be a HUGE help.

Sometimes we joke that it would be easier if his flat just burned down instead. tongue_ss.gif

Jeraly
What I have done for my own sanity is to box things up I want to take so I could clear out my room. Some companies will let you pack yourself but you need to have boxes that will be ok for customs (I just stuck mine in banana boxes which aren't all that great! Will need to re-pack). Other companies will pack for you. As I live with my mum I only had my room to clear out, so if you are shipping a lot of furniture then this might not be so easy. I would move all the things I want to take into one room so it was all together but that is just me.

As for shipping companies - a lot of them have web forms you can fill in rather than call - you can find a list of them in the first post in this thread. Also just try googling for international movers or something like that smile.gif

Good luck! I'm waiting on some calls back today!
Jeraly
Had this e-mail from MoveMe - they seem very competent although have a minimum volume charge of 2 square metres.

Packing your goods for shipment - IMPORTANT PLEASE READ
For full details and pictures follow this link -
CLICK HERE - To see how we pack your goods for shipment
All goods moved on our shared container services are safely and securely packed on to pallets for shipment. Other removals firms will pack your belongings loose along with other peoples loose items for shipment. This greatly increases the likelihood of loss, pilferage and damage being sustained by your belongings during transit and can also cause delay in the UK prior to shipment while they amass enough cargo to fill a container. Before being loaded for shipment your goods are:

* Packed to pallets by our team of professional packers to best minimise the size of your shipment. Where safe to do so we shall use all space in cupboards, drawers, wardrobes etc.
* Shrink wrapped to ensure that your goods do not move during shipment to your new home.
* Thoroughly wrapped using cardboard and bubble wrap to further protect your goods.
* Given a durable outer layer of black wrapping to further ensure that goods are both protected and out of sight from any prying eyes.
* Lastly goods are fully marked / labelled, strap banded to the pallet(s) and given a unique pallet seal number.

With the exception of Customs and Excise, should they wish to, no one at any stage of your move has the authority to open your sealed pallets which will give them access to your belongings. By the virtue of the method we employ to pack goods we have access to weekly departures to the vast majority of destinations that we serve.

Exclusions
If your rate is to our overseas depot only, you will have to pay the destination agent for certain services they supply. All overseas agents make these charges, which cover them for handling and holding your goods pending completion of customs clearance formalities. Examples of these are: 1.Terminal/Warehouse handling charges at approx. £ 22.00 to £ 30.00 per cubic metre and may vary depending on final destination. 2. An administration fee of approx £25.00 to cover telephone calls, non customs paperwork written or general advice. 3. Local delivery fee from the customs depot to your door, or you can of course collect the goods yourself. 4. A customs brokers fee to handle your customs paperwork. (In many cases it is more prudent and economical for you to deal direct with overseas customs. We have the relevant customs forms for Australia, Canada and USA which we will send if required. Dealing direct with overseas customs means you do not have to pay a brokers fee, our overseas agents will give you further advice on how to do this and avoid the brokers fees. The charges above CAN be prepaid in the UK but by paying them direct to the overseas agents, in local currency, you avoid additional costs relating to currency exchanges, bank charges and administration costs associated with 1st Move transferring funds on your behalf.

Just called them as well - they are based near me which is cool and they seem really good if a little pricey - it is only to Los Angeles (but can pick up ourselves) and there would be about $100 extra charges at that end for processing etc - the quote they gave me was £582 based on a minimum of 2 cubic metres. Have Pickfords coming to visit on Thursday so will keep updating info smile.gif

£580 seems to be kinda standard for me though unsure.gif
Poiteen
If you're happy to pick up from the port, have you checked with all freight?
Jeraly
I contacted them but haven't heard back yet. Would be best to get door to door if we can but obviously if that works out much more expensive then we will go for the cheaper option. Pickfords coming out on Thursday should be interesting - I think that is who StP used and she said they were really good smile.gif
