My mom got onto my elder brother when we baby sat my cousin - she said holding babies too much will give the mother a hard time bc she can't do anything the baby won't stop crying until she holds the baby. She won't be able to do her day to day daily work. She later admitted she would let him (my bro) cry in his crib so he would get used to not being held or being spoiled! mad.gif I can't let a baby cry I'm weak in that.
sarahaziz
That's exactly what I'm saying, babies aren't like that forever you're gonna miss these days when they cry to be with you when theyre are older - only their spouse can make everything in the world better for them!! Enjoy motherhood!! money/work/cleaning/cooking isn't anything it comes and goes, age doesn't it goes and goes and goes like memories

I definitly don't want a baby carrier...I don't want to get the baby used to being held all the time.

I used to say that too but a colicky baby will make you do things that you NEVER before thought you would do! I mean she would cry nonstop save a few hours of sleep unless she was in that sling. It was very therapeutic for her.

Yeah I've heard this from many people but arabs are very anti-holding, lol. I'm getting lectures now about not holding the baby too much and my mom is going to take care of her when I go back to work so if she gets used to be held I will never hear teh end of it.

I think the key is to not use it constantly. My kids werent dependent on anything thank G-d and I think that is because I didnt do anything too much. I used the bjorn maybe once a day and for a reason like i needed to get something done, or at the supermarket. there is a certain age where its easier to but them i the bjorn than to put them in the cart at the supermarket.

My MIL grew up in tunisia and is the same way with the dont hold the baby too much "not too much in hands" but meanwhile she wont put the babies down for a second, hypocrite! she says "not too much in hands" when the baby is in someone hands besides hers! meanwhile my american mother hates lifting the baby, at least now that he is heavy.
ZaidsMommy
sara, i have to agree with u 100% .....theres a HUGE difference between holding a 6 month old too much and a 1.5 year old...small babies love to snuggle...Enjoy it while u can...I know I am...

I will say...the baby carrier...not interested to have one, never was...zaid loves his swing, bouncer, etc, that keeps him entertained while i have stuff to do
julianna
I have a metrowrap. They claim for up to like 45lbs but I figured it's a baby thing moreso than a kid thing.
Jenn!
I have stretch marks and I've never been pregnant. wacko.gif Looking forward many more....

jenn...dont feel bad, i got them when i hit puberty...Some I think are just subseptable (sp) to them...I got them extremely bad on my tummy after 37 weeks...they are fading alot, and I believe most will go away, but, i expected them...My mom got them super bad...oh well, ill never wear a 2 piece again...DARN...lol...I never wore a two piece to begin with...

I think you'll find this reading interesting Sex of baby

The moment my mom found out she was pregnant with me, she started "eating for 2"...(like, mom, a 1 inch tall unborn baby doesn't need a 10 pound steak, fries and a shake!). Those pounds were the hardest too loose, so I hear. I hope I can behave and watch my weight when my time comes kicking.gif

watching your weight when pregnant sounds a lot easier than it is, I dont think anything compares to pregnancy hunger. it can lead directly to panic in no time flat. and panic can lead you to the closest drive thru for the largest value meal. you have to plan ahead and have a lot of healthy snacks close at hand.

When I had my son years ago my grandmother was really big on the 'you're holding him too much' thing. and my mother in law started it when she was here and I first had my daughter. I have read a number of studies that indicate it is pretty much impossible to spoil a baby less than 6 months old. During those early months lots of holding and cuddling actually helps the baby feel secure and safe and to know that when he/she cries or has a problem that someone will help. In the long run it can actually lead to more independent and happier toddlers and children. I hold my baby whenever she or I want to and now that she is getting older she doesnt want to be held as much. she wants to explore and experiment and work on crawling, etc. if she gets fussy usually she just wants to know that I am around, she wants me to be in eyerange. If she is especially clingy for a day or two its for a reason, most recently when she was getting her teeth. we had to hold her all the time for a few days because she was miserable and didnt understand why and wanted some comfort. but now she is back to her growing independent little self, as she should be. I guess if she was 2 and couldnt deal with being put down that would be a problem but so far I dont think we are on that path. and at the end of the day, she is only going to be this small for such a short time. when else in her life am I going to be able to totally solve her problems and make everything all right for her just by picking her up and giving her a cuddle? so why not?

as for the sling, I had one too and I hated it, we could never find a way for it to be comfortable for both baby and wearer.

The way I see it, she was inside me for 9 months all safe and secure and now she was out in this big ole world and she needed the extra security of smelling my breath, feeling my skin, hearing my heartbeat.

Now...........at 11 and 12, neither one of me will let me snuggle them anymore. I'm lucky if I get a kiss goodnight! crying.gif

Do any of the new mom's use slings like these?

http://www.hotslings.com/s.nl/sc.2/.f

I used to use one with my youngest, though it wasn't a fabricy one like the above, it was a Bjorn Baby or whatever the heck that name is. She was VERY colicky after the 2nd week and ONLY stopped crying when I had her in the carrier. Made my life sooo easy since I could do dishes, clean the house, and take my oldest out for a walk (she turned 1 when I brought my youngest home from the hospital).

I bought a hotsling for my baby. I used it maybe once, it was cute and fashionable but not comfortable for him or for me. I used my baby bjorn ALL the time though.

Yeah that's what I'm hearing. I used my baby bjorn all the time too but it just wasn't comfy after a certain age...I think it was like 4 months that it was good until. Seems like a waste and these other ones look soooo snuggly.

technically the bjorn is supposed to be good until like 35lbs? i think? no way! my son is now 29lbs and i dont think i could carry him in that. but the hotsling? no way would have have been able to hold him in that in the past few months the bjorn lasts longer.

True. I guess the appeal to the hotslings for me is that it seems like it would be an easy thing to do to walk around the mall with the baby in it and then when baby gets hungry switch to breastfeed mode and use the hotsling to keep modesty in tact. With the bjorn you can't really do that since it's not made for that purpose. Oh well, guess I need to actually make a baby first before I can have a valid discussion on the comparison of the two! laughing.gif

Are you certain your work doesn't already have one? I found out by sheer accident (was looking for a room to pray in) that we have a "mother's room" on the floor below us fully equipped with a hospital type pump that apparently (per the moms that I know use it) is super powerful. Might want to just ask around before spending the $$$.

I did both. I wouldn't recommend bottle feeding though until the baby is very well settled into breastfeeding. My daughter got a bit "confused" but eventually settled it okay. It's nice to have someone else feeding the baby and gives your husband another way to bond. I feel bad for them really. I had a double breast pump that I rented from the hospital and I must admit I felt like a cow, but it got done more quickly.

You pump because you have to be away from your baby, not as a substitute. Some people even pump milk for premature babies to help them. But its really not one or the other. You pump to store milk so you can be away from your baby and your milk doesnt run out and then you store the milk

babies love their momies if they pump or dont pump ...they even love their mommies if they are bottle fed. Somehow all babies survive

I just found out about a baby thats still breast feeding at 8 years old> Well she isnt a baby anymore. I am not sure how I feel about that. I dont judge her but um.. I think 2 years old is my limit for sure. Although I know some 30 year olds that would love to breastfeed.. ( ok I AM KIDDING)

That's not 100% true for all women. I pumped so that my husband could participate. I was right there in the room while he bottle fed her. And there are more and more women who do that. Also if your baby has a latching problem, then pumping is a way for them to still reap the benefits of breastmilk.

I agree, Medela is the best quality pump. When I was pumping, my work had Mother's Rooms. They supplied the pumps and I would bring my own attachments. It was so convenient. There was a fridge and a sink in there. I think that was the only nice thing that company had to offer it's female employees.

Yes this is the same pump I have had for almost 6 years. I just need to buy the disposable parts that are new. As far as sharing a large unit, it is fine you just have to provide your own disposable parts. I have seen this at major cooperations, where they have a mommy room, and a few larger breast units. Women have said it was nice to go and relax at work while doing this (instead of feeling stressed). Medela has a few different models which range in size, I recommend a double pump as oppose to a single one, my oldest I had just a single one and it becomes more time to pump bag, etc...Also check to make sure they pump comes in a nice cooler storage unit. Mine were great size and kept quiet cold (freezing) while driving home in the desert heat.

I am set to be induced 2 weeks before my due date which is September 15 to the 17th depending on who's counting so you and I may deliver about the same time ( 38 weeks) I need to be induced because my son was 10 pounds 3 ounces vaginally and had a brain bleed ( subdural hematoma) cause he was too big and he got the back of his head crushed and had to be in icu a week
My daughter was induced 3 weeks early and was still over 7 pounds so she would have been another 10 pounder. I am not doing ten pounds again vaginally .. OH HELL NO. No epidural in the world cuts that PAIN> YOW

When I was done breasting feeding (before they were 1 year old) I switched to carnation good start formula. They never had any problems in switch to this this brand which provided a few extra proteins for digestion. Now they changed the name to Nestle (I think) I know they have a completely different package too. It was right when the brand came out and infamil was the most popular.

Wow congrats on being 6 months, you know I thought I was due all this time on Sept 9 and I found out my pregnancy brain is stronger then ever because I am due Sept 3 unsure.gif no wonder everything has gotten uncomfortable around here. How are you sleeping at night? For me it is getting worse, finding a position, the baby has gotten so big and my tummy has poked out more and more. As far as stretch marks I already had them, so now they are just stretched more, lol. I have no problem getting out of the shower since its separated from the tub, but getting in and out fo the tub gets harder and harder.

Hmmm sleep? Whats that? Ever since my belly poked out I hardly sleep. I've always slept on my tummy and now I have to sleep on my side which I hate. Add in the fact that I have to pee every hour and I probebly get about 4 hours of sleep per night. However so far, the best sleep I get is on the couch because the back of the couch keeps me from moving around.

We have a shower tub, so just lifting up my legs to get out can be painful. But even with all this, I think the worst part has to be the swelling of my ankles and feet. Up until my 5th month, I had only gained 8 lbs. Between week 23 and week 24 I gained 11 lbs! So total now of 19. My doctor says its all water bcz it happened in a matter of a week. But I can't wear jewelry or shoes nows. I pretty much live in flip flops. So now I know where the saying "barefoot and pregnant" came from.

JP .....EVERYTHING u are describing is almost like u are descriibing the exact way i felt, symptoms, etc....Must be those darn jordanian babies...

I too slept on the couch from like 7 months on.....it felt better to have the support on my back...Black old navy flip flops became my new "work shoes" and at 31 weeks i swelled up like a balloon....do the doctors think u may be becoming toxemic? How has ur protein and blood pressure been? I thankfully never had issues, I just swelled up for no reason, there was even one week i gained 5lbs in 6days..It was all water weight but it scared the docs...watch ur salt intake...I know it canbe hard with all the arabian food, but, once i started monitoring the salt, my swelling would get alot better...drink plenty of water..keep your feet elevated, they need to be higher than ur heart...and i hate to tell u this, but it only gets worse, try to enjoy it while u can....once zaid dropped (and he dropped very early..like 36 weeks) I couldnt even pick up my feet to get panties on...and it to was hard getting in and out of the shower...zaid was a 9lb whopper tho..so maybe u too will have a big baby girl....when will u be taking off for maternity leave?

LOL@darn Jordanian babies!

Well my blood pressure and protein are fine, I just got my most recent set of labs back last week. As far as water goes, I drink a ton. Ice water all day! I don't even touch arabian food anymore, mostly eating lebni, yogurt, eggs. fruit, veggies. milk, and some meat. lots of salads. Before I got pregnant, I would always retain alot of water during my T.O.M., so maybe thats why?

We had a heat wave this last week and that seemed to make the swelling even worse. I know what you mean about putting on panties, that has become a struggle lately and I know its only gonna get worse. As far as her size goes, they think she is going to be small or average because of the condition I have (SUA, single umbilical artery), basically her umbilical cord has 2 vessels instead of 3. Usually there are 2 vessels that send in food and oxygen and one that takes all the bad stuff out, she only has one of each. So she gets half the amount of nutrients that a normal baby would get. However she is fine, she has developed fine and that was their original fear (abnormal development of heart, kidneys, and lungs).

I plan on working until I have the baby, sounds optimistic but our company just got aquirred and I have to get everyone trained on our new systems before I leave. I do plan on taking 3 months of leave though. star_smile.gif

Does anyone know or heard about if you rather use breast pumps vs direct breastfeeding does it break bonding between mother and baby?> or is it considerably the same?

( ok I AM KIDDING)

ughh you are so wrong for that lol omgg

I heard its good to breast feed a baby as long as you can for brain development.

I was at a party with friends and family couple of years ago and this 3 year old we were playing with was so cute but he suddenly smothered his face happily in my chest and was smiling I was like wow...he even tried to open my shirt I'm hoping for breastfeeding not something he saw somewhere else--everyone (only friends were there) started cracking up insanely I felt so violated. I couldn't breastfeed an older kid at an age that could walk and go to school.

I've heard the opposite. Doctor's say the first 6 weeks are the most important...that's what I plan to do.

my baby is totally bonded to me because of breastfeeding .. but she will suck from a bottle as well which is a very good thing .. we only give her breast milk though .. we found that other milk makes her throw up (infamil with iron)

Oooh that is a very smart move, I'm pretty sure anything not natural shouldn't be fed to the baby. I think that's why kids are at a healthy stage vs when growing up as an adult and being able to eat whatever.

I dont know. My bottle fed baby eats absolutely anything and everything.. shrimp ,harira , garlic, clams, crab , any kind rice or food imaginable. The breast fed one eats absolutely nothing that has any sauce, is high maintance and picky. Both were exposed to the same kinds of food. Both were exposed to all kinds of food. The preschooler literally was cracking people up in Algeria eating everything including paella and anchovies. My older child, breast fed, totally was a pain to travel with . All he wanted was chicken nuggets and pizza and literally starves himself if he has to try new foods. Go figure
humpkinpumpkin
Both my girls were bottle fed. One eats everything and the other is a wicked picky eater. Both are very very healthy and bonded beautifully with mommy. I wanted to breastfeed but I was totally too drugged up after having both of them due to serious complications during childbirth, etc. so I didn't want to pass that on to them and once it was out of my system I figured they were hooked on the bottle.

Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the
affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it
amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

OMG I am going to make sure habibi has plenty of bananas or at least their skins laying around next time I'm in Palestine. The mosquiots over there ate me alive and they are as big as my head!!!:) I never seen ones so big in my life, arab blood must be tasty for them to become so big, lol

as for who has to eat the banas.....well, my husband loves bananas so I will not have to work too hard to get him to eat them. I am not extremely fond of them but when he comes back and awnts a baby I will be:)

ok so some of you are discussnig breastfeeding and all that and I thought of something interesting. Recently I watched a documentary called "The Business of Being Born". It is about the healthcare/maternity system in the US. They were pro midwife and having babies naturally. They said that US is ranking to be second (I think) in infant mortality rate in the world! And we are the ones using midwives nad having more births by C-section because the doctors do not want to keep the women in the hospital for too long. (health insurance companies ya know)....
It was an interesting show but I'm not sure what I agree with. I've never had a kid before so I totally don't know what it's like or what to expect. So myself, I do not know which way is better. What are your thoughts while we are on the topic?

it's the second highest infant mortality rate in the developed world, not the entire world. more births by c-sections has nothing to do with not wanting to keep women in the hospital for too long either-having a c-section usually more than doubles the time women spend in hospital post birth. but it certainly lowers a dr.'s liability($$$) if there are complications with the baby.

When signs of fetal difficulties are detected at the onset of labor, Dr. Hankins offers several options, including a Caesarean delivery, which the overwhelming majority of patients accept. But, he said, ''I have to do 500 Caesareans to prevent one case of cerebral palsy.''
