Hey guys, I just recieved my ssn which says valid for work with the authorization of D.H.S. I just applied for A.O.S with the I-765 (work permit) but that will probably take about 3 months before I get my work permit. My question is can I start working now even though I don't have a work permit but I do have a ssn that authorizes me for work? B.t.w I am on K1 visa. Thanks

I read some where in the forum that the I-94 serves the purpose of a work permit until I recieve EAD, which means I can work on I-94 as long as its valid and my ssn? Is that true?

You can start work as soon as you receive your EAD, but not before I'm afraid.

You can only work if you got the work authorization stamp at JFK and that's only good for 90 days. If you didn't get the stamp, you will have to wait for your EAD card because that is your work authorization and without it, you can't legally work in the US.

This really sux, this means I have to wait for another 3 months. I am bored out of my skull, I hate this crying.gif I found this on SSA website which clearly says that K1 visa holders do not need a work permit as long as ther I-94 is valid. Here is the link https://s044a90.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203500#c1. Again what do you guys think after reading this?

You can go ahead and apply but when an employer asks for a work permit, you need to show one and an I-94 is not good enough. Also, even if they do take the I-94 they will verify the information with Immigration and they won't have anything showing that you can legally work in the US since your EAD has not been approved yet.

Since you now have a SS# you may be able to take some classes at a community college if you want, that should keep you busy for a while until your EAD is approved and they're not that expensive.
