W,

If you are as interested in Algerian culture as you claim to be you will realize that you have something to learn from Algerians who have a different experience than you do with it. For those who are Algerian, including Algerian-American, French-Algerian or Tibetan-Algerian, they know their culture because they live in it not because they read about it. Culture is not an absolute and it is not a history quiz.

I have read extensively about Algerian history. I married an Algerian. I lived there. Should I read every book ever written on the country, travel to every corner, have a child with my Algerian husband, eat nothing but cous cous, have Kateb Yacine on my bedside table, convert to Islam, mutter Camus in my sleep and bathe in olive oil I will still not be Algerian and will still have something to learn from those who are.

I know you think you sound knowledgable here and I for one think your interest and studying is admirable. I like your videos. I like you. But, berating Algerians, regardless of their age, about what their own culture is or is not is neither admirable nor knowledgeable. It is embarrassing.

Pick up a book on how culture is transmitted for your next reading binge.

I have wanted several times to stop responding to her but she keeps on picking at me... I have nothing against her personally but she has been pretty nasty JP and pretty consistantly. I havent reacted to her any differently than I would an American who acted like she does.

Is 'aggressivley ignorant' name calling? Sounds a bit harsh.

Not much harsher than calling me a blob, a horrible mother and a litany of other things...

there IS something to be said for being the mature one and knowing when to call it a day and walk away. sometimes it says a lot more than tit for tat sniping, be it with an american, an algerian, or a martian.

Does Algeria have any famous serial killers? Now that I find interesting, just not one of the top countries that have Sociopaths, but maybe I have missed something good. So give us some good stories of a good nut job in Algeria. devil.gif

You know we have alot of witches/gypsies in the village areas. They perform magic like they'll put a dead persons hand or bone in sharba or any dish to simmer and put bad prayers. My spouse told me alot of stuff what went on when I went back to USA it was so scary I couldn't sleep at night in his house after that because we sleep on the first floor and they don't have sturdy windows anybody could break in!!

Oh yeah and on our marriage day this old woman she had a daughter who liked my husband and that woman was taking hair strands off my hair brush my mother in law was so furious there was some big big drama! I was just sitting there like WOW!!!

I have so many stories it's so crzy.

I was referring to he pages & pages of insessant bickering with personal attacks peppered throughout (which is against the TOS). The thread you mention, it seemed like VJ Troll was making a joke of a categorically unfunny situation. Distasteful - perhaps, but not against the TOS.

So first you say "Like I said. Intelligent people dont have to resort to personal attacks. You are not well read. Not very well educated and know next to nothing about your own culture."

Then you say "while you may be Algerian, you are not well educated nor well read nor do you have even the smallest inkling about your own culture. You are an airhead. Shallow. Young. Immature with no common sense. No one to listen to or be concerned with which is why nothing you post is remotely interesting. Get a personality and read some books and I will check back with you

Does this mean you do not consider yourself intelligent with all of the personal attacks here? Give her a break - she is as you say young and getting married etc. She might read some more books as she goes through life, give her a chance to catch up.

Ive tried really hard to be patient...but she has been pretty abusive...I was a bookworm at her age.. I cannot really relate to her very well...

so dont! different strokes!
sarahaziz
Yup, I'm not here to impress anybody with my knowledge or experiences. I'm honest and give advice get advice on visas or whatever. I don't get attitudes with people who respect me why would I? I only have a mouse and a key board how much trouble can one create on VJ forums!! innocent.gif

I have always had some deep suspicions that there are gypsies in my family tree. I used to be absolutely terrified of gypsies. I always felt I had some dark curse over me, and in my culture, my people eat that kind of stuff up, so it helps in my delusion. One of my good friends from England and I were talking and I said something about gypsies, and he turns to me and gets this look on his face, “I hate gypsies,” used to beat them up and fight them all the time. I was surprised, but then I figured if the gypsies were going to curse someone, they would surely curse James, he actually hit some. That blew my whole theory apart, since he was one of the luckiest bastards alive. So I guess I can’t blame the damn gypsies anymore. Damn.

Who is your favorite Algerian author Sarah and how many books have you read in the last 2 years about Algeria or authored by Algerians? What Algerian historical figures are inspiring to you and why? How many places have you travelled to in Algeria and where did you visit? I d be interested to know since you think that no one else on the boards is interested in history or would benefit from discussion of it or the literature of Algeria..

I am very very curious about the answers to these questions. They will tell alot about you...

I dont have any admiration for harkis and smagria

ou are not well read. Not very well educated and know next to nothing about your own culture.
I am married to an Algerian and the mother of an Algerian and unknown I have many more ties to Algeria than you will ever know. I will have a son with my husband in 5 months. I have spent 7 years and over 15000 thousand dollars giving back to Algeria all the things its given to me and the reality is while you may be Algerian, you are not well educated nor well read nor do you have even the smallest inkling about your own culture. You are an airhead. Shallow. Young. Immature with no common sense. No one to listen to or be concerned with which is why nothing you post is remotely interesting. Get a personality and read some books and I will check back with you

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That was for aisha and anybody else who missed the interesting argument. For the record that's what set me off. You can't go around calling people prostitutes and then worshiping their countries land then calling a truce. It's a dead issue though for now.
