Since I am calling from overseas,the NVC website states email is the preferred method of contact, and I couldn't get through by phone anyway...(deep breath) I have emailed a request for a case number to NVC.

Does anyone know how long this usually takes?

It usualy takes the NVC 2 weeks to reply. Dont expect anything but an automated response!

It took me about two weeks to get an NVC case number and I obtained in through the automated system. I am not sure how it works to get it by email, but I can tell you that I usually wait 7 to 8 days for a response from them by email.

Every time I've emailed them they took 5 business days to send me a response.
When did you email them?
