It is funny that I read this post. When I was talking to my fiance she mentioned horse meat and I felt like heaving.
I had to explain the culural difference. How in the US we view such animals like people. Similar to dog and cat. Most people who have these animals view them as family members. To us the thought is repugnant because in our minds it it comparable to eating your brother or sister.
She did not quite understand. All I could say was that when you are in America you will learn more of cultural differences and then understand more.
I did consent to trying some horse meat but.. lucky for me... I did not get the chance. hehe
Kumis, mares milk, sounds very interesting. Getting drunk while drinking milk would be a change! hehe

Perhaps you could find someone that would sell you a horse and they would slaughter it for you. Most people on farms have no problem slaughtering animals that they sell. The only problem that you'll have is finding one open-minded enough to agree to it. (That, and you might want to check the legality of slaughtering a horse for human consumption. That may not even be legal in Ky.) If you explain that you're from another country and that's what you do there, maybe they'll be able to help. Good luck!

It's funny how touchy Americans are about all of this. We are the people that eat tons of Hot Dogs, Chitterlings, Fried Chicken, Pork Rinds, and even Deep Fried Snickers bars. Not to mention Twinky's, and all kinds of other processed and fatty foods. MSG, anyone? That stuff is so good!
We obviously don't care about the quality of our food. But yet, the idea of eating something that comes from a certain animal grosses us out.
That's part of our mentality. Something doesn't make sense to us, so we don't like it. But yet, all the crazy stuff that we do is OK, and everyone else should just deal with it. Welcome to America!

Been in the meat business for 22 years I can tell you the USDA doesn't allow horse meat to be sold for human consumption here in America. There are several well know slaughter houses here in America who sell horse and buffalo meat to other countries. You can research the web, there is a company in New Zeland who would ship you some horse meat through FedEX. I don't know the cost but I have heard it is very expensive. I have also heard that goat meat taste just like horse meat.

I love goat met especially curried, but I would never dream of eating horse meat. I am too scared of them . I wont say I never will because before I ame to the US I was adament about eating cat well to my surprise a few chinese restauransts serve up cat instead of chicken. Horse in the US are domesticated animals and banned for consumption, goats on the other hand are raised as livestock.
I dont think anyone should knock the thought of at least trying something. It is what I tell my son how do you know what vegetables ( brocolli beans cauliflower etc) tase like if you never try it before. I am not trying to offend anyone this is IMO.

Yes, eating horse is common in Italy. I know around here there are lots of Italian butchers. Maybe you could ask one of them if you have access?
BTW, what's so gross about it? Many people feel it's gross/wrong to eat veal, or lamb, or even cow or chicken for that matter.

Alma, can't you just find some farmer out there to sell you a horse?
Another thing you could do is wait until deer season, and "accidentally" shoot a deer-looking horse that just happened to walk by your treestand.
Or.... you could be "target practicing" out in the pasture and the horse that was waaaaaaaaaaaay over on the other hill just happened to catch a ricochet.
(Hell, now that PETA is involved, might as well get the NRA in here too!)

GRITS!!!
They're delicious. Put some butter and some sugar on them. Some people even put cheese on top, and some real rebels even use salt. I've got a sweet tooth, so I go with the sugar.
And, now that summer is here.... it's BBQ season. Ribs, chicken, pulled-pork.... the possibilities are endless!

It is ironic they are living in Kentucky. It may give some real opportunity. I can recal a friend who used to live in Modesto right after they granted the boat people asylum saying that all the cats in the neighborhood disappeared not long after they arrived. If you're looking for a lean meat with good flavor, deer is the way to go.

Just an FYI. It is illegal to sell horsemeat in the US for human consumption. The two slaughter houses in Texas can only sell outside the US, mostly France, Italy and Spain I think. But you cannot purchase horsemeat in the US. Sorry, try buffalo, or elk, or caribou, or mooses. I dont know anything about mares milk but I would think you would want to leave that for the little horses. Can you imagine giving baby animals human breat milk. We are trully a strange species.

I suppose you are also against the human consumption of Cow's milk? We don't give cows human breast milk, but we do drink their brest milk. As a matter of fact a lot of food that is essential to our health comes from diary products. Your logic makes me wonder.
