After all the bureaucracy that I went through to get to the US, it's much easier when you're here.
I found the SC driving test incredibly easy. I was expecting to have to get a learner's permit but they looked at my UK licence, copied it and gave me the 20 questions theory test (good job I'd glanced through their highway code that morning) and then they said "go round the back with your car and wait for the examiner". Wow. A couple of circuits, some reverse parking and that was it! My licence was issued on the spot so the next day I went out and bought my own car and use that instead of my wife's car. I'd been using an international licence until then.
My dad has always been associated with the military and so I grew up around guns. It was somewhat surprising to find I could walk into Walmart to buy clothes, food, guns and ammunition. That'd never fly in Britain! Eventually my wife suggested that we got a gun for home defence and so started a new interest. I even passed my concealed weapons permit without any problems. The only hassle I get is when I want to buy a gun from a store. A US citizen with a CWP would just show that and walk out with the gun. I have to prove 3 months residency and they'll only accept utility bills in some stores, which is a pain.
Driving here I find can be horrendous. There're a lot of incredibly bad, scary drivers around. I'm rather glad I bought something big and robust that has plenty airbags. Only the other day I was almost sideswiped by a moron witha trailer and that's not the worst. I'd say the percentage of good and bad drivers are the same as in the UK but the bad ones are much more dangerous. You'd think in a country where 50% of the population is armed that they'd be a little more cautious!
