You need to apply for the EAD separately from the AOS but it can be sent as the same time as AOS (even in the same packet). The fee is included for the fee for AOS ($1010) but the applications is separate ( http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/I-765.pdf ). If you just turn in the I-485 for AOS, that is just the greencard.

Once you get the EAD, you can apply for SSN.
