Hello,
Please my question is about the tax returns.
My interview is on the 5th of next month. I have most of my documents ready. My fiancee in the usa sent me tax transcripts of 2002-2004, and w2 forms of 2005. I was told by a friend to still get the 2005 tax form.
My question now is; (my fiancee has filed/submitted his 2005 tax forms) Can he make a notary of the photocopy of the form and send it to me>?

Since my fiancee has already submitted his 2005 tax forms, can he notarize the photocopy???

Thanks...
Sarah (from nigeria)

ps: below are the documents i already have together. Are there any other documents i'm missing?? Please ill really appreciate any suggestions... thanks

You do not need notarized copies of tax returns (I only sent unsigned and un-notarized copies since I file electronically!) If the Nigerian consulate demands it then and only then you should get them notarized. Good Luck

I'm sure this has been discussed elsewhere, but I am still puzzled. How can a notary notarise a form that has already been signed?

I made the mistake of taking originals to the interview. I don't know what I was thinking but they kept them. When it was time to file for AOS I had to get transcripts from the IRS.

Motu is correct. There is no requirement for anything to be notarized except for the I 134. Sometimes folks here get a little carried away and a little confused about what the purpose of a notary is.

umm..my 2 pesos...You notarize a signature not necessarily a document. So what you might be refering to are certified copies of things like legal documents. I'm not sure if you can get "certified" stuff from IRS.

I heard that transcripts were sufficient. Why notarize transcripts??

Many people seem to think that a notary somehow verifies authenticity of a document.

A notary public watches you sign a document, checks your ID, and verifies that you are in fact the person who signed the document. If the document is not by signed by you, then there is no need for a notarization.

In addition to the other comments, the copies of taxes filed by your fiance along with the letter from his employer and his recent paystubs are simply to prove that he can support you. There is no reason that he needs to get these things notarized - they are his copies of his taxes filed.

sjoefl01,

How did you take original tax returns to the visa interview - didn't you send the originals to the IRS? (Rhetorical question - if one prints out their tax return from a computer, which printed copy is the 'original'?)

Sometimes folks get the idea that the copies of tax returns have to be notarized because they read the OF-167 or DS-2000 information sheet where it says one type of financial evidence that can be submitted is notarized copies of tax returns. Blame it on the DoS, not the people who are trying to follow instructions.

diadromous mermaid,

I believe that a Notary Public can also compare a photocopy of a document against the 'original' from which the copy was made and then attest that the photocopy is a true duplicate of the original.

I was asked for copies of the returns, they didn't ask for them to be certified or anything... Hope this helps
