I know that in NYS one is required to obtain their Driver's Permit at the DMV by taking a written test. This test is offered in several languages besides English, and those languages include both of the languages which my fiance speaks.
This is wonderful, but I also know that in order to obtain the actual Driver's License, that one must then take a 5 hour pre-licensing course outside of the DMV, in a classroom setting. Does anyone know of any such classes that are offered in languages other than English? I have been searching online and I can't seem to find anything. If anyone has any information, it would be much appreciated.

If there is an on-line course you could take it for him...um, I mean, translate for him.
Is this only in New York? My husband only had to take the written exam for his drivers permit and the the actual driving test to get his drivers license. It was really easy.

My husband had to take a "pre-test" in order to get his license since he never had a license (or permit) in the U.S. However, there are 4-hour courses offered on-line in English and Spanish. Then you can take the driver's test in English or Spanish, then take the road test. Oh yea, we live in FL.

Did you not say you were moving to another state shortly? Why not check out the requiremements to get a DL in the state you're moving to? Perhaps they don't have this 5 hr pre-driver's ed thing and your SO can take the test there.
Texas doesn't require it...my hubby took the 'written' test orallyl, with my father serving as interpreter and two days later we scheduled the driving test which he passed w/ flying colors. He paralel parked in one motion....I was chatting w/ others waiting and I missed it, but there were some others there waiting to take the driving test for their CDL (18 wheelers) and one sait how competent my hubby's driving was.
I felt quite proud, especially since he'd never driven before he got here.-P

yes, we are moving to indiana in a few weeks, but unfortunately i have heard that the process in indiana is even worse...that you have to wait 2-3 months for them to verify your immigration status or some bologna like that...also, the permit (written) test in ny is offered in albanian, so that makes life much easier...if i wait until we move, i dont think he would be able to get his permit until he learns enough english in order to do so
im not sure what the policy is in indiana with regards to an interpreter, but that is something i will definitely look into
I think the 2-3 month wait is only if you do not have an SS#, then they must verify one's immigration status. I should mention that my hubby had his EAD and the GC in the mail when we went to get his license as they need at least 1 primary ID document to verify identity. In Texas a foreign passport can only be used as primary ID if the I-94 has at least a one year validity period, which we know with K-1's is impossible. That was the only caveat....and the reason we waited until after his EAD to go get his license...but maybe its different in other states?

i just got off the phone with the indiana bmv and they have absolutely no interpreters for italian NOR albanian throughout the entire state...how is this possible??? and you have to be employed by the bureau in order to serve as an interpreter...translation, we are shlt outta luck for indiana

In Indiana, you cannot apply even for a state ID without a valid SSN. Only after application do they verify your immigration status.
Times have definitely changed. Back in the day when Spanish was not so popular as it is now I was allowed to translate for my parents when they took their written exams at the DMV.
And you know what? Now that I remember I also took that stupid five hour class when I lived in New York, but I thought it was because I was less than 16 years-old and was still in school. I took it in the summer time and it was so hot in there and that stupid movie was from like the 60s with an old guy talking the whole time. It was booooooooring!

yea, i took it too, what a bore!!
i think i might be able to make it work, because it seems that some schools allow an interpreter (me lol) to accompany non-english speakers to the 5 hour class...as long as i can find one in nyc, we are good to go
i just wanted to update this for any future vjer who might have the same question as i did...i found a 5 hour class near my house that allows non-english speaking students to bring a translator with them to the class...the place that we are going to is in downtown brooklyn and it is called new tech driving school...if you call around the schools in your area, i am sure that there are many more who allow this service...i will be accompanying him to the class as his translator

i dont know, i was wondering that very same thing!!

this is ridiculousOut of curiosity, when you called the Indiana BMV, did they say they would take the out-of-state license without putting him through CV? Because he will still have to show his immigration documents and all of that and you have 30 or 60 days to get a license after you move here.
