Newly issued Social Security Numbers can sometimes take up to 10 business days to propegate out of the SSA to the IRS which the bank will use to search against. Try back later.

Just a guess, but I'm assuming your SSN was issued from a Group number that just started to be used or the bank is using an old list.

The SSN consists of Area-Group-Serial (AAA-GG-SSSS):

http://www.ssa.gov/employer/ssnweb.htm

The High Group list shows the highest Group number within each Area that is in the process of being assigned and is normally updated monthly. Some businesses use the High Group list to determine if an SSN is valid. The bank may be using an old High Group list or your SSN was assigned from a Group within your SSN Area that has recently begun to be assigned.

If your number has an * next to it on the April list, it's a Group that just started to be used and the bank is using old info. If it's not on the April list, hopefully it will be on the next list.

You can find links to the current and previous months High Group lists on the SSA Website at:

One other thing

Within each Area, the Group number (middle two (2) digits) range from 01 to 99 but are not assigned in consecutive order. For administrative reasons, Group numbers issued first consist of the ODD numbers from 01 through 09 and then EVEN numbers from 10 through 98, within each Area number allocated to a State. After all numbers in Group 98 of a particular area have been issued, the EVEN Groups 02 through 08 are used, followed by ODD Groups 11 through 99.

I Quit knows his stuff. In our office we had the program check and 'error' out SSNa not issued (to catch data entry errors and Invalid SSNs) - many times out programs were not updated from the IRS list in time and we would get several hits and would have to call someone to get the table updated. It is the bank's system that has not been updated - they need to be advised of this - someone in that organization (not all will know of this) will know what this means and should be able to get it fixed. Its not your problem but their's, however you are caught in the middle. Hope you get it resolved soon. Good Luck

That's exactly what happened to me and my bank. Luckily, they knew what to do about it.

Note: Initially, my husband changed his account to a joint account and added me to it. The bank used his SSN until mine was issued. I then updated the bank's information after I received my SSN.
Jomo's girl
It took 2 weeks for out bank to catch up with the SSA lists. I left all the information with our customer service lady and called once a week till they did.

No use calling SSA. All they will say is it is correct on their end and it's the bank's problem. Believe me.....been there, done that.
