Assuming I get my visa one day and my fiancee and I get married, how long is it before I can travel outside the US? We want to have our honeymoon in Mexico or the Caribbean but I've heard that you have to wait quite a long time before you can leave the States again.

You will need to file AOS, get your biometrics appt and then receive AP. For us it took about 2.5 months from filing to receiving AP. We traveled out of the US for christmas and went on our honeymoon in March. Filed for AOS late Sept. Caribbean was an awesome honeymoon, I want to go back!

Our AP was approved in 69 days from date of filing. They seem to be taking anywhere between one month to three months to approve the AP.

That's sooner than I thought. Thank you both for your help good.gif

Just keep in mind that you will need to get married within 90 days of arriving in the US on the K-1 visa, and that you cannot apply for the AP or AOS until then.

And since AP cvan take a few months to come through, it will probably be necessary to postpone your out-of-US honeymoon until after the AP comes through. Of course, there are many romantic locations within the US you could travel to!

Yesterday, I was talking to a non-VJer at work who has also applied for a K-1, and they were unaware of this. They were all set to book a non-refundable honeymoon in Mexico for three weeks after their interview date. She had no idea her fiance would need AP! She was upset, but very grateful I caught their mistake before it was made. I also told her to come check out VJ.

Not saying we are doing anything illegal, but VJ is like a treasure-laden underground community that once people discover it, a whole new can of worms is opened. I'm glad we can "recruit" new people into our community.

I wasn't aware of that. I'm glad I checked blush.gif

Oh boy! I'm glad you did too!

Just FYI... you can apply for AP (I-131) seperate from AOS but it's $305 if you do it that way. If you file with your AOS the EAD (I-765) and AP are included in the $1010 fee.

Whatever you do, don't leave the country after entering on a K1 without AP!
