Hello everyone!

I'm in the process of AOS and EAD right now (AOS from F-1). I changed my name on my SS card after marriage but it says the wording on the card "Valid for work only with DHS authorization", and I'm wondering how it would say on the card for a permanent resident and if I need to change mine later.

Thanks!

It says nothing for a permanent resident. They issue a new card that is unrestricted. And you should apply for an unrestricted SSN card after you receive your green card.

You should be able to get an unrestricted SSN card after you get the EAD.

I think you can only get the unrestricted one if you have a green card. I went to apply for ssn after I had my EAD card and mine is still restricted.

The officer at our interview the other day told my husband to go down to SS to get a new social without restrictions AFTER he receives his green card in the mail. smile.gif

No No No!!!

When an individual was previously issued an SSN card with “NOT VALID FOR EMPLOYMENT” or with “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH INS (or DHS) AUTHORIZATION” printed on it and has been granted permanent residency, he or she can apply for a replacement SSN card that reflects the new immigration status.

An alien granted permanent residency status is eligible to be issued an unrestricted SSN card and will retain the originally assigned SSN.

Documents that establish lawfully admitted for permanent residence (LAPR)

-- I-551 card

NOTE: Some LAPR aliens have conditional 2-year I-551s (Alien Registration Receipt Card), subject to the limitation that they must apply for removal of the conditional basis 90 days before the second anniversary of the admittance date to the United States. A conditional I-551 is identified by an expiration date 2 years later than the admittance/adjudication date is acceptable proof of permanent residency.

-- Temporary I-551

Temporary evidence of immigrant status is issued for an alien to use until the permanent I-551 card is received. This may be a stamp in the individual's passport or on the I-94.

I was wondering about this but reading that last post gave me a headache, too much detail. It would have seemed simpler just to say yea, re-apply to get the message off the SSN card. Sorry, this immigration stuff is complex enough without including all the government mumbo jumbo on top of a simple question.

You don't have to be insulting, I just thought you over-stated a simple question but I guess that is your nature.

Hopefully, you won't get into a situation that you need the government mumbo jumbo, but I have found that knowing the government mumbo jumbo is an asset when dealing with SSA offices. Plus people shoudn't reply to questions when they have no idea what they are talking about.

It is obvious from this and other posts from you that you do know the mumbo jumbo but sorry for me saying it just gives me a head ache to try and read through all of that to get to the answer. It is easy enough to go to the government web site and read all the regulations about this and that. Why not just give a straight forward answer and then if the person needs more detail, give them the link. I don't know about others but to you you are just showing off.

Well let's put it to a vote. I will stop posting help here if the majority of people don't want my help, since there is nothing on this Website that I need and can spend my time doing other things.

My intentions weren't to have you stop posting, just don't make it so detailed that the average person gets tried of reading the post before getting to the actual answer. You, like other members who have been here longer, have a lot to offer and are very helpful with varioius immigration questions that otherwise would probably require a lot of work gleening information from various government web sites like the ones you post links to.

Hello everyone,

I'm the topic starter. I will go to SSA office after I get my green card to get an unrestricted SS card.

Thank you all for your replies!

The actual answer to the question is at the top of the post. If the fine print was too much, the average person could just bail out there. BUT, that detailed information has been very useful when some members need to, ahem, *explain* the rules to the SSA employee (or USCIS emp, DMV etc). You have to remember that ideally, the answers posted are not only for the person who asked, but those who come along afterward.

I might point out that this topic IS in the FAQ and has been there for a long time (since oh, 1998 or so).
http://www.visajourney.com/faq/k1k2visa-aos.html#6.11.8

6.11.8)..Can I go get a "normal" Social Security card after AOS?
A..If you have a Social Security Card with "valid only with USCIS (INS) authorization" on it, then go to the Social Security office after AOS with your passport or green card and get a new Social Security card that does not have the restriction. You will still have the same Social Security Number. Do this as soon as practical. It is in your best interest to inform the Social Security Administration of your immigration status after Adjustment of Status.

Methinks if you would read a bit more before you chew out a very valued member of the VJ community, you would understand why the "mumbo jumbo" is sometimes necessary.

Not only has mdyoung been through the whole process from beginning to end (his wife's naturalization was recently approved), he has an exhaustive knowledge of SSA, and I know his experience and knowledge in that area have been helpful to me personally and to countless others here.
