Okay all you Brits. I am sure this has been discussed at length in the UK forum, but my search turned up discussions 6 pages long and my baked bean craving will not allow me enough time to go through all of them to find my answer. You guys love talking about food.

Being Canadian of British parents I have grown up on Heinz beans, and so today, with my husband away on business, I decided what I needed was beans on toast for dinner (husband detests them). So I go down to Safeway for the express purpose of purchasing a tin for my dinner only to discover they don't HAVE them. That's insanity. Do they not have them at all except specialty shops for lots of extra $$?? Or can they be found at SOME select mainstream shops?? Please don't tell me I might have to order tins of beans online or something.

I wish I had known about this before I had moved!!! We would still be in Canada! ohmy.gif

Where should I look?? I'm in Boulder, CO if that helps:)
THANKS!!!!
Jason&Sarah
Ah, funny thing! I saw them in Giant Eagle this past weekend in their ethnic section (a whopping $2 a can!!!!)...out in CO though I don't know what you have out there, maybe try King Sooper?

Best bet would be to try Cost Plus World Market...I know I saw them here in that store as well...

Thanks so much! Even an address and phone number! I haven't explored World Market yet, so I'll head down there tonight or tomorrow.

Hmmm, I don't think so. Taste different to me (tried them). Maybe psychological, but definitely taste funny. Otherwise I would gladly pay much less and stop whining:)

If you can find a shop that sells Irish things (seems to be more common than British, you may find an even better alternative that Heinz beans, Batchelors Beans mmmmmm *dribble* ahhhahah

I love heinz beans and I didn't think I would find any that tasted the same.... BUT I bought some Bush beans... They were a certain flavour.. I can't think what now! But they really didn't taste all that different! They could have been the original ones...

And yes... We do like talking about food biggrin.gif Not as much as duvets though kicking.gif

World Market!!! They have them...and not sure if you guys have this up there in CO, but in CA we have local grocery stores that have things mainly from India, but for some bizarre (but o-so-excellent) reason stock Heinz Baked Beans too...so if you have any East Indian's in your neighbourhood, ask them where they get their fresh fruit/veg/provisions, and you will probably find them there, cheaper than World Market.
rebeccajo
We buy ours at Giant Eagle.

Or online. There are several online purveyors of british goods - on the tip of my tongue is jollygrub.com.
catrocks
I don't think the Bush's beans taste similar, but I've only tasted the brown sugar and bacon flavor. They are nice but not Heinz.

A good alternative to Heinz beans here are vegetarian beans - we get the Kroger own brand but I'm sure they have them in other brands - not exactly the same but they are in tomato sauce so they're pretty similar.

We get Heinz beans from Meijer. They are so expensive. Good luck in your search smile.gif

As an American, I cannot disagree more! Bush's beans and all other American brands are much sweeter than Heinz. As someone else pointed out, vegetarian beans are the closest thing to Heinz.

Good luck in your quest!

Okay so...

The only Heinz beans available around here are "Heinz Vegetarian Beans" in a green can.
Is this what I should stock up on for him? biggrin.gif

He can't stand the Bush's, especially the flavor I like... "Maple Cured Bacon".
No worries, I'll open one can of Bush's for me and the kids, and I'm sure he'll finish off a can of Heinz on his own!

But it's probably not even the same because products between the UK and the US always differ. Sprite and Coke, special K, lays chips, exact same name brand stuff they screw with the recipe for god knows why rolleyes.gif Unless I guess it's imported, but geez the price...well whatever floats your boat tongue.gif

Iain about cried one day when I bought and tried some of ya'ls canned mac and cheese xD Omg though, the like...'complete breakfast' in a can stuff though, with beans and sausage and egg and TOAST and god knows. Don't dare try that laughing.gif

Ahaha, that's true. My Mum is VERY concerned about the lack of duvet covers down here. I think she is considering a baked bean/duvet/yoghurt mercy mission from Canada (yoghurt is another problem I'm having. I can't find anything really nice). Canadians like a good duvet cover too. If only there was an Ikea nearby (it's a nine hour drive away I mapquested it).

I AM going to Cost Plus today to check. I'll also look into an Indian food store (although not very many people of that descent in Boulder). And I'll also break down and try a variety of different Bush's beans. Maybe I sampled a bad flavour. But things are sweeter here. Even the Heinz ketchup is quite different.

On the plus side, having Target nearby does sort of make up for all these problems. All Canadians love Target, because there is absolutely NOTHING similar in Canada. We have entire threads dedicated to our love of Target over on the Canadian forum. Sad, I know!!

It's like a sort of superstore that has everything, and is cheap with a sort of upmarket gloss and slick advertising that makes everything seem nicer than it really is. They have their own lines of lots of products, and they get "famous" designers to do inexpensive limited edition clothing lines for them. Some of them have grocery sections too. I guess maybe the closest UK equal I have seen is ASDA?? But not sure.

Target offers great low cost, but quality shopping opportunities in every city in the US! A very upscale version of WalMart. Try it, you'll love it!

My fiance went on about the Heinz beans and refused to try our commonly available Van Camp's Pork and Beans. I've eaten the beans in the UK and they taste the same to me. The 'pork' part, I think, was what was putting him off. They're pretty plain with no extra brown sugar, etc. There's about two tiny cubes of what I guess is the 'pork' in the whole can and that's easily fished out if it's so offensive.

Well to prove a point, I bought a can of Heinz beans at the British Market in a large city while we were there. Then back home I did a blind taste test with him. I heated the Brit beans and the common (in Texas) pork and beans and served them in identical bowls. I told him to pick out the 'real' beans from the British store. He actually picked the the Pork and Beans as the proper British beans. So those particular beans couldn't be too far off the mark.

Well, I am glad I could bring about this discussion on such a relevant and important topic....thank you all so much for your insightful, timely commentary on this hot-button issue....I clearly came to the right place!

I can't agree that any US baked beans taste like those you get in the UK - but I also can't quite bring myself to pay the price for Heinz here. I now have a craving for beans on toast with real butter, rats!
rebeccajo
I like Heinz beans all right. And toast.

But there's just something about the combination that is really not tasty to me. I've tried and I just don't like it.

US beans have sugar in them (probably HFCS), unlike UK beans

This matters not to be because I hate baked beans almsot as much as marmite

There's not a Target in every city in the US. The closest one to us is 80 miles away.

I do think there's probably a WalMart everywhere.
SnowyTater
I should really bring some of those breakfasts in a can home as gifts, great idea laughing.gif Did anyone actually try them though? I wanna know who eats them. I bet my dad would...

Man...Target's so overrated. It is cleaner but I think the quality of the products and the number of sweatshops is probably just as high as Walmart's, so I kind of resent that they're trying to pretend to be better based on looks and image alone. And they don't have nearly as much selection. I'll take my trailer trash walmart anyday tongue.gif

Don't bring too many. They weigh a ton. laughing.gif I know a couple of people who ate them. But they were hung over and would have eaten anything anyway. My Cousins put them on display on their bar. I mean, who doesn't want a can of Full Monty as a conversation starter? laughing.gif

My local Big Lots is more organized and clean that most Walmarts. I HATE Walmart.

In Michigan we always had Meijers (which I love) which is 1000x better than Walmart

A whole fresh supply arrived from the UK packed into my sons suitcase when he came for a visit.

Okay, I just got some at World Market. They only had two tins left and they were dented and they were $1.79 each but I still bought them. And I am eating some RIGHT NOW on toast and they are delicious. I also bought a Turkish Delight which I ate immediately in the car despite my "only eat chocolate at home" rule. You can only get that at specialty shops in Canada too, so it was an extra treat.

I kind of agree with what someone said earlier about Target being kind of just a bit glossier than Walmart with fancy marketing, and cleaner, but not *really* that different (maybe a bit trendier stuff) but I don't care, I still love, love, love it:). I can spend hours in there and I often do, since I'm not yet working. Sad, right??

My husband, for one. Or at least he used to, when we first met him, and before I started feeding him up on home cooked meals. He lived on a total, utter bachelor diet -- everything was either from a tin or a plastic tub that needed microwaving, with the exception of crisps, Kit Kats and white bread for toasting. Then I kidnapped him and started feeding him vegetables, only slightly against his will. And I swear I saw at least one tin of Full English Breakfast in his cupboard before I removed him forcibly into domestic bliss. smile.gif

Yes smile.gif Its a horrible place! They just built one in my town (right next to 3 other grocery stores AND target). Now I live in a fairly nice area, no sizeable population of trashy people as described above. However, I ventured in one day for something and every person in there was in their PJ's slippers and dragging dirty looking children around. I dont know where they all came from! And if you need Tim's, come visit. We have one 10 min from my house! But to be fair I live 45 min from the border smile.gif We need to make a trip up for some Smarties for my husband smile.gif
Jason&Sarah
I have a feeling I'm going to need to stock up on Heinz Beans before Sarah gets here, else there may be serious consequences!!!!!

I bought the Heinz veggie beans last shopping trip, and I don't think they're quite the same (a bit darker in color), but they're fairly decent.

What *I* want, is Irn Bru!!!!!!! They're slowly bringing it over to the states, but I read they had to change it a bit to keep it FDA approved...which is sad, because I loves me IRN BRU!

And Nando's...how I miss Nando's. I was going to buy some of their sauce, but the world markets around here only carry the medium...but luckily I can buy it online! :joy

Also, there's a site - www.britishdelights.com that has a TON of stuff (not just food!) from England.
SnowyTater
I want Ribena. All your diluting drinks, squash and what's the fancier kind called?...whatever elderberry sort of flavors, etc. Never see those in the US. I don't think we get anything like that. Kool-Aid and crap sure though xD Mmm kool-aid.

When our town's Walmart first opened everyone in my high school pitched a fit and petitioned the principle's office wanting the day off to celebrate it. You HAVE to wear PJ bottoms when you go to Walmart, I don't know why, it is the rule. But all these "dirty" people everybody talks about, I don't get that...we are all pretty slumming sloppy looking yeh but not dirty. Well maybe at 2 am biggrin.gif

I never really go to Big Lots but I totally should. My bro-in-law is a manager there so he gets the Big Lots prices, and then he gets like...everything when it gets marked down from that price by like 85% because they can't get rid of it, and then he gets like whatever employee discount is. So he ends up with a kitchen table and chair set for like 15 cents or something all the time tongue.gif

Whoever said they'll miss Waitross...here in the US I'm pretty sure supermarkets are regional, and I don't know where you're moving. But where I'm at I LOVE Ingles, beautiful produce and fresh section, ever growing supply of organic food and the price is getting so much cheaper (4 years ago NO organic food in the southeast at all), etc. Here in Charleston we get Harris Teeter which is also good but more uppity and arbitrarily expensive. I think Public and Whole Foods are both national though and most people like them though I never go...
Don't worry though tons of stores like Waitross smile.gif Waitross's salad bar sucks...as there's no like...salad in it.

Neil thinks that Beanie Weenies are the closest thing to Heinz Beans he has tried. They do have hot dog pieces in them but he likes that too so he doesn't care
