I love heinz beans and I didn't think I would find any that tasted the same.... BUT I bought some Bush beans... They were a certain flavour.. I can't think what now! But they really didn't taste all that different! They could have been the original ones...

And yes... We do like talking about food biggrin.gif Not as much as duvets though kicking.gif

So true - and I love it! This is the oddest forum, but I like to think it reflects what is truly important in the average Briton's life. tongue.gif

Well, I am glad I could bring about this discussion on such a relevant and important topic....thank you all so much for your insightful, timely commentary on this hot-button issue....I clearly came to the right place!

If any of you are ever interested in lively debate over Tim Horton's coffee and the lack of US equivilant, the wonder of never-ending soda refills, the weather, or the correct way to spell things or use your knife and fork, please feel free to venture over to the Canadian forum.

ohmy.gif How did I not realise that the Canadians are so similar to us?
Glyn and Kathy
Don't mean to butt in, but...do they have breakfast in a can back in the States? Glyn loves it (he even takes it for his dinner at work) but I never noticed them when I lived in New Hampshire. He will be very happy to know that.
As long as he has his HP brown sauce and all day breakfast in a can... good.gif
Jo1973
Try out Kroger's Vegetarian Beans in Tomato sauce. This is the only place I can find beans without any other crap in it like pork and brown sugar stuff.

They are literally the same as Heinz, much nicer than Bush's and around 40c a can. Kroger do also have an International section (they sell Heinz as do World Market and online places but charge nearly $2.00 a can).

catrocks
Our old Kroger had the international section. It was great. Unfortunately we've moved and our Kroger now is kind of ghetto. Still, we only moved 10 miles laughing.gif

Oh and Target is just awesome. I love Target. I try not to go to Walmart because it creeps me out. Hubby bought a mullet wig around Halloween time and wore it to Walmart (complete with mirrored aviators) and seriously, no one gave him a second glance! It was a perm mullet wig..... he looked like a reject from some hair metal/ glam rock band rofl.gif - but that's what most people look like in Walmart.
Alex & Rachel
laughing.gif Ew!

I've not actually seen a Walmart - but I've been to Target several times and have liked it. Alex used to work in one! tongue.gif
Toshtishtash
There is nothing wrong with Walmart. They're all just snobs ^^^ tongue_ss.gif

We are a very confusing blend of similar and not similar:)
SnowyTater
Noooo, we don't get breakfast in a can here, we WERE talking about the UK. At least I've certainly never seen it in the US and I'd better not ever either xD
It seems like the Scots have a huge affinity for sausage too. Another bombshell for you guys. No good sausage here sad.gif Or maybe if you go to gourmet butcher's shops there is. But say bye bye to your bangers and mash and huge meaty breakfasts. Oh and our cheese sucks too apparently because of some pasteurization rules so that's gone as well rolleyes.gif

If you've been to Asda you've been to Walmart. Seriously. Same.

And the Harris Teeter around here doesn't have no Ribena :'( Even the little cafe that has some brit imports doesn't have it. They just try to sell me McVities digestives for like $5 a packet, wtf. They won't even order chocolate hobnobs they just order skank plain digestives! Grrr! But I haven't checked Whole Foods or Publix, will have to do smile.gif

Beanie Weenies really is like the further thing possible from Heinz beans you can get laughing.gif But they're cute.

Yep. Crappy sausage, crappy cheese. sad.gif But there's a gourmet cheese shop which has opened about 45 minutes from me, so I'll have to check it out. smile.gif

See if you can find an Indian grocers. They always have it. good.gif

The McVities (and hobnobs and etc) are pretty cheap at World Market. The Maltesers are pretty expensive though. mad.gif
Glyn and Kathy
I can do without the cheese...I have gained over a stone since moving to the UK because I love the cheese so much. I have found the cheese that Glyn and I eat most here over there in the States, its a crumbly cheshire cheese but its expensive.
Glyn and I are hoping to open a Breakfast place where you can get a REAL FULL ENGLISH BREAKFAST. We are most concerned with finding some good sausage so we may end up having to make them ourselves.

Try this site...

http://www.britishbacon.com/comersus6f/sto...ersus_index.asp

I personally have not used them, but our Director at work has (his mum is a brit) so they get an awful lot of brit meat from there. It would probably be cheaper if you bought the meat wholesale etc but if you do decide to open up a B&B then maybe try them out.

SnowyTater
I bet it's not that hard to make sausage yourself though, I think a lot of places in the UK do it. There's this place called Monster Mash in Edinburgh (not sure if it's a chain?) that features different sausages every day. I was always under the impression that they made them themselves.

Had never heard of World Market but just looked it up and it looks pretty cool ohmy.gif Apparently there's one in Charleston AND in Greenville which is one town over from my permanent address, so totally gotta check it out, thanks. It's all oooh smile.gif

I took a part-time job with a butcher a few years ago. One, because I wanted to learn about the meats and cuts and things and, two, because I was bored for something to do after my full-time job. Anyhooo.... yes, they're simple enough to make yourself. You just add different ingredients to the meat. The problem lies in the fact that you'll have to use american pork. That's why you won't get it tasting the same as in the UK. But you might get close, depending upon the supplier. I sometimes just buy the pork and add my own ingredients, but I just form it into patties instead of into a casing. Makes it easier.
BlueRain77
Not sure if anyone mentioned this but Cost Plus World Market sells them. Also if you want an alternative, Bush's makes a Vegetarian variety of baked beans that my husband says are even Better than Heinz...

This is a great thread! I never liked baked beans ( and I am from the Boston area lol ! ) I had a strong liking while in England for the baked beans they have, in a nice tomato base( I say tomato, you say tomahto lol ), usually our beans are in a supposed tomato base but i think more of a maple taste ... yuck but the Bush's Vegetarian are the closest if you can find them locally, but luckily my local supermarket has an "International" area that sells Heinz Baked beans...and Bachelor Baked Beans ... which I like better smile.gif

Where I live there is a store British Imports that I'm sure we will be doing lots of shopping at ! smile.gif

There are alot of US based stores you can buy the Heinz baked beans from if you can not find them locally

http://www.shop.britishgoodsonline.com/main.sc
http://www.britishsupplies.com/

is it not sad I have a Bookmark file titled "English Food Suppliers" <-- should I print that in my K-1 application? lol
Lamb is another one, it's expensive here , but standard in loves home? What is an American girl to do LOL!

Wow five pages, eh?? I now know that if I need some fun reading, all I have to do is come over here to the UK forum and start a food dialogue.

With that said, I mentioned to Mum that I had found Heinz beans, and she asked if I saw any of the Heinz Curry Beans in my travels, because she can't even find those in Canada. Although I just usually put some curry powder in them and I think they taste the same.

Also, what about self raising flour (I have not looked very hard for this yet though)?

The only Heinz beans available around here are "Heinz Vegetarian Beans" in a green can.
Is this what I should stock up on for him? biggrin.gif

He can't stand the Bush's, especially the flavor I like... "Maple Cured Bacon".
No worries, I'll open one can of Bush's for me and the kids, and I'm sure he'll finish off a can of Heinz on his own!

Why thank you. smile.gif

But as an American reading the label... "Baked Beans in Tomato Sauce"... I would naturally expect it to be baked beans in red spaghetti sauce. I'm guessing it's not. laughing.gif

I can't wait to discover for myself the exact appeal of "beans on toast". Anyone care to explain?

Sounds repulsive, but I'm sure it's... edible.

I think it's possible that the appeal of beans on toast has to be ingrained from an early age, otherwise the appeal is simply not as strong tongue.gif
SnowyTater
Meh, beans on toast is alright. I've had it like...twice. Totally edible and good if you're hungry. Think it is ingrained probably. I love Chef Boyardee spaghetti sandwiches for god's sake, who would I be to talk tongue.gif

I actually have been procrastinating not doing my essay for awhile and just came across this recipe beans sandwich

baked beans, onion, tomato, cheese and bacon on english muffins tongue.gif Hey it's got a five star rating, I bookmarked the dang thing biggrin.gif

FYI I went by the store today and Harris Teeter here DOES have Heinz brand (love the purdy color of the can). I think it was like $2.80ish whereas Van Camp's was like 80 cents. Screw that. Thought maybe it'd be cheaper here in the south but noooos.

I have actually had the Heinz beans and to me the are quite bland. They taste like beans in the sauce from Spaghettios. Not terrible, just not really exciting to the palate, IMO.

Am I the ONLY person that doesn't actually mind Walmart?

I don't mind the Super Walmart they recently opened here. It's clean, tidy, and if you time your visit right, not too many people shopping.
However yesterday we were at the other end of town and there was a Walmart there. I needed a cheap belt so we stopped to see if they had one there. It was a horrible dirty nasty place. I actually said as we left, now I see why everyone hates walmart so much laughing.gif

On the down side, we found some Spicy Sweet Chilli Doritos there (And they're pretty much the same as the ones in the UK in the red bag which are my all time favourite flavour) so we might have to go there again as they are the only place we've seen them since the first time we got them a few weeks ago sad.gif

As for the other things, Heinz Beans, HP sauces and Ribena (and a couple of the Robinsons drinks) are readily available down here in Publix so that's ok biggrin.gif

SnowyTater
What the heck is suet...is it some kind of meat product? In pudding? Omg you guys stop eww.

I had bread pudding once in Edinburgh at this restaurant called Howie's. Only it was cheating. It was dark chocolate bread pudding and huge and hot and omg the best thing EVER. So delicious....

It's true that older non-super Walmarts tend to really suck and be really disgusting, same goes for the Kmarts that are left around here. I don't even think about those though, they're just like...huge bleak dollar stores or something.

My hometown's sheriff office is in the Walmart laughing.gif

I just googled it:

The traditional Gummi Bear is made from sugar, glucose syrup, starch, flavouring, food coloring, citric acid, and gelatin. There are also some types of Gummi Bears made with pectin or starch instead of gelatin, making them suitable for vegans.

Gummi bears made with either bovine or porcine gelatine are not suitable for vegetarians and do not conform to kashrut or halal dietary laws. Those made with bovine gelatine are not suitable for Hindus.

Some of them are made from stuff to do with pigs and cow type creatures unsure.gif

Haribo's AWESOME. That's another thing you brits can kiss goodbye when you get here in the land of the brave and free and opportunity and all that. Well...our stores have started carrying just the bears, sure. But all those crazy ones, and the bestest of course the starmix with the hearts and eggs ohmy.gif BYE BYE.

BUT you can order it off amazon quite cheap. For Christmas I bought Iain like five pounds of twin cherries off of Amazon for I think $15 biggrin.gif

The bovine/porky stuff goes for anything gelatinous yeh, so marshmallows, jello, pudding, etc smile.gif Mmmm fine with that. You guys don't get pork rinds. We get pork rinds.
Madame Cleo
I thought everyone knew what gelatin is? Not horses hooves though, very few Western countries use horse as a source for any food product.
