They're pretty modern which is cool but the whole 'each one has a part of the coat of arms' thing is a bit weird...

Neat! That's some nice looking coinage.

The only thing I think could improve it - is one of those little motion spots that I've seen on coins from Syria. ( how they did it ... I have NO idea ... it's right in the metal ... it's ... weird ... and cool! )

Ahh! I just noticed that there - part of a big picture - reminds me of the commemorative stamp sheets you see - I love those!

It's settled - I must get my hands on a set. biggrin.gif

Wales isn't on the coat of arms they used for those coins.

Psh. Psh, I tell thee.

It is not surprising then that Matthew Dent chose the Royal Arms, and in particular the shield of the Royal Arms, as the theme for his innovative range of new designs. The Royal Arms is divided into four parts: England being represented by the three lions passant guardant in the first and fourth quarters, the Scottish lion rampant in the second and the harp of Ireland in the third, with all four quarters spread over the six coins from the 1p to the 50p. Completing the new range of coins is the £1 coin featuring the shield of the Royal Arms in its entirety, uniting the six fragmented elements into one design.

It's the Royal Arms, which doesn't feature Wales, basically. And the guy is from Bangor, too! For shame, boyo.

the DON'T have Wales, but the DO have a Harp?????? Pah. Glad I'm leaving wink.gif

Oooh those are cool. Are those just like collectable sort of limited things or are they going into regular circulation? Neat.

You know I kind of really like the heavy pound and two pound coins (for some reason 2 pounds coins are exciting xD) but the charm has worn off...Do all you Brits have this same problem? Iain has NO POCKETS. Like...he has pockets when he first buys his trousers. And then a week later they're ALL gone. Because he carries around an ever-accumulating amount of change and all of your money's so heavy it just piles right through it.

And then he starts keeping coins in his back pocket and then THOSE go and oh seriously. Not practical.

I have never heard of this before...certainly not my hubby. blink.gif

Oh gawd. You just reminded me. I need to dig out my euros and bps before my trip. The "Oh Gawd" is because I can't remember where I've put them. laughing.gif

Well they can't change the royal coat of arms just for the coins and I think you'll find the reason it is not on the royal coat of arms is because Wales is a principality therefor has a different coat of arms.

Yeah - they look pretty cool biggrin.gif

I collect those quarters wink.gif I have a fair few already but it would be nice to get ones that are freshly minted smile.gif

Tash!! OMG - we so need to get together - we can play swapsies laughing.gif

Jeremy said I could just go into a bank and get whole rolls of them but I told him that was no fun... besides - you have to compare the new one you get to see which is the shiniest laughing.gif
j4k
I send them to Kevin everytime a new one comes out. I got him a folder once with a slot for each one so he can save them.

We also just started the gold dollar coins (about a year ago) with the president's faces on them. I think there are 3 or 4 so far.

Cool - will have to get Jeremy to get me a wallet biggrin.gif Or I could just get one when I move biggrin.gif
Toshtishtash
Ooooh! I want a wallet too!! laughing.gif

Gold dollar coins? That's a great idea. Are they going to replace the paper ones? Or are they just special edition?
Jeraly
You can get gold dollar coins anyway biggrin.gif I just didn't realise there were collectible ones as well biggrin.gif
Toshtishtash
Hmm, I didn't know that! I have never seen one, I don't think?

Those paper dollars annoy the hell out of me! They take up sooooo much room in your purse!
j4k
yeah, i wish we'd go to dollar coins...you can spend the gold dollar coins, but most people here for some reason still prefer the paper ones, so i don't see them going away anytime soon...have you seen the $2 paper notes? laughing.gif they are pretty rare...most people don't use them anymore unless they're in a bind...
Jeraly
I have a $2 bill smile.gif
StillThePrettiest
I have a ten million Deutschmark bill smile.gif
(1923; massive inflation wink.gif )

I used to show it to my Year 5 kids and watch their eyes bug out of their heads... there was always a moment's lull before someone blurted 'why don't you SPEND it, miss?!' laughing.gif

State quarters.....lemme tell you a funny story.....

Wes' first visit to me was in February 2005. By that time, we Americans were used to seeing the state quarters in our pockets and they really didn't mean anything to us unless you were a collector, which I am not.

We went thru McDonald's one day, and Wes gave me some money. He'd been here about two weeks and I looked over and saw him fiddling with his change. I remember thinking 'omg he's having trouble with the money'. When I asked him, he said 'no I'm looking at these quarters - they're not all the same' - LOL

So I explained the program to him, and he became transfixed! Immediately when we got home he started going through all the change in the house trying to find different states. He looked them up online to find out how many had come out so far and he made a list of the ones he didn't have. He continued sifting through quarters every time we went out and got change, and there was a great celebration everytime he located a different one. When he went back home, I was duly charged to continue looking for 'missing states' until he came back again...

Of course now we have a folder, battered coins have been replaced by mint or near mint, and he collects both D's and P's. And he thinks its pretty funny that the rest of you Brits like 'em too.....

rofl.gif

That's priceless!

Sarah was quite amused at my reaction to the coined pounds. For the first two weeks of my visit, I just kept the coins in my pocket. I kept forgetting about the coined pounds and just always gave out notes. I always joked around about getting a change bag. I think at one point I had about 25 pounds in coin in my pocket!!!!!!!

Her brother was quite amused with my American bills, saying how confusing it was to have them all the same color and same size!

We were in Glastonbury and went to a cafe, and I paid for our coffee, and the lady literally gave me back about 4 pounds in 20p coins!!!!!! To this day, I tell her if they ever have a vote to get rid of a coin there, go for the 20p!!!!
StillThePrettiest
I have a feeling I'm going to like looking out for the different quarters too wink.gif

I like the different fifty pences here... though the only one I've kept is the one with 'fifty pence' written in all different fonts on the back; I think it's LOVELY smile.gif

laughing.gif Jeremy suggested getting the Ds and Ps but I said I wasn't that bothered... yet wink.gif When I move of course it might be a different matter just cause I am a bit... well... inclined that way laughing.gif I think my story is something a bit similar rj biggrin.gif

LMAO - Jeremy *still* does that!! He is really good with the money here but I think it is just habit - change in the US really means very little whereas here it actually holds some value!! We try and save our notes and spend the coins!!

Indeed, which is why I'm surprised this design was chosen. Normally, coins have local customisations for everyone, even us ruffians in the principality.

As an American, one of the things I liked best about UK currency was the way the 1 pound coin had different designs for each of the countries. I do think it's a shame for that to be 'gone'.

From what I've read they are not taking the old coins out of circulation - they'll be staying. The news coins will just be added into the current circulation. But I do agree that I liked the old pound coins and the different things on them. Thistle, Leek and so on.

Love the look of the new coins. good.gif

Am I the only saddo who just can't handle US money? I've been living here 4 years, regularly visiting for over 15, and I still can't get a grip with the cash. Whenever I am in a shop I always use large notes cos I can't stand to count out all those one dollar bills, or even worse work out the difference with those tiny little coins. My mother is a maths teacher, I did pretty well at school with maths, but come to counting US money in front of a stranger and I freeze! blush.gif

I found the US coinage hard to get used to. I couldn't get my head around Dimes and Nickels. Then I started working with money and it all came together - although I'm often found counting 5 quarters as equivalent to a dollar, rather than 4. For some reason I think they are the same as 20 pence pieces!

What I dislike are the dollar bills - they take up so much space for something worth so little. biggrin.gif
