I just read something that confused me slightly.... (Doesn't take much... )

Do you know on the form DS-230 that we had to send back in with packet 3..... Question 33a says:

Do you want the Social Security Administration to assign you an SSN (and issue a card) or issue you a new card (if you have an SSN)? You must answer "Yes" to this question and to the "Consent to Disclosure" in order to receive an SSN and/or card

Right... Does this mean that I will get one automatically through the post? Or do I still have to go to the local SS office to get one myself.

If I am going to get one issued to me without doing that... What happens if my address is different to what it was at the time of interview? (Which it is... Chris has just found us an apartment ) How do I go about changing my address etc?

Hi there, I asked the same question when completing packet 3, apparently most people tick the box but still go to ss office to get their card after 2 weeks of entering usa.

That box only works for people coming over on Immigrant Visas (CR1/IR1). They get a Green Card on entry and their SSN is mailed to them.

We, unfortunately, have to have the pleasant experience of visiting a SS Office.

Also... Change of subject slightly, but I asked another question earlier in the poll forum about EAD... I was wondering if anyone would know about this?

See, i'm unsure whether it's worth it or not too....

If I fly to New York then it's an 8 hour round trip for my SO to come and get me... We aren't planning on getting married until July 19th so there is absolutely no way of me getting EAD within the 90 days that the EAD stamp at JFK gives me...

Is that true what someone said above though? About still being able to apply for EAD before AOS? If I do it the way i'm planning, then I will be out of work for 5 months at least (Which is going to be a bit tough financially speaking) So I would actually find it worth it to pay the $400 and get it earlier...

If you enter on a K1 you cannot apply for EAD before AOS. You can either apply for them together or apply for EAD after AOS but definitely not before. It's a FAQ in the AOS forum, a lot of people want to know the same thing.

The temporary EAD stamp you can get at JFK is completely separate from the EAD you apply for with AOS. It's available to any K1er entering at that POE.

Whoops, yes forgot about the temp one. Although the temp one is only valid for the 90 days of the I-94. Once your I-94 runs out you need a new EAD and you can't apply for that before AOS.

I agree - I never saw a huge benefit to getting it, though it does depend a bit on individual circumstances. But it is still an option that many decide to exercise, and I know it's been very helpful for some who want to work from the day they get here (and aren't so concerned about what might happen 90 days later). AND it is completely outside the AOS process. I just wanted to make sure that was clear.

Although as Tracy just pointed out you can get a temporary EAD at JFK that is valid for the first 90 days.

So the temp EAD given at JFK doesn't expire for 90 days, regardless of whether you get married the next day or not?

When you get the next EAD (the one you get when you file during AOS) how long does it last for?

The 'regular' EAD is good for a year.
