You can put there a tentative date, enough time that you have the visa on hand. I read it does not matter whether what date your flight, but ofcourse don't put something too early.

back then when i put "when the visa is granted", slec didnt accept it. they want a date so i wrote a tentative one. same as the ds-form for my interview lol... even if that's not the final date, they just want to see a tentative or something... i wrote feb, 8 i think yet i flew jan. 27 lol...

Since it only accepted a specific date, what I did was to leave it blank , printed it and hand wrote " when visa is granted".

After the form is generated for the DS-156 application, I created text boxes using Adobe to input information (at some point, I have done that with all of the forms).
