hello28
HI. I just filed 3 months before my wife's conditional residency expires... so I sent in my i-751 to remove conditional status. I just noticed that on her SSN card it says....

VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION.

I emailed someone before about this, but wanted to make sure that we can get that notation taken off her SSN card. Also, what docs do we need and how difficult is it to have it taken off the SSN card and if it's possible. Can we do this BEFORE her 2 yr green card expires or should we wait until we get the extension letter? thanks in advance!

It doesn't necessarily need to be taken off. All you need is to show the valid greencard, either at the SS office or to her future boss. The greencard is DHS authorization.

I know I woud like to get her a normal SSN card without that restriction on it. Also, if she tries to get a job after her green card expires and the SSN card has that restriction on it, I wonder if it will cause problems, even if she has the extension letter? If her 2 yr green card expires July 12... does this have to be done before that time? sorry for the questions.

It shouldn't cause her problems getting a job - all the notation is intended to do is make an employer see another document proving she has authorization to work...which would be her green card (or card and extension letter).

I would still get it removed. It's not hard to do anyway - plus you are supposed to submit any changes in immigration status to the SSA. You'll only need to do it again if she decides to become a citizen.

I applied to lift the restrictions on my SSN card after I got my 2 year conditional green card.
Now you have permanent resident status as long as your marriage exists, so you can to SSA to apply to lift the conditions on your ssn card as long as bring your green card, no matter it is 2 year or ten year .

Get it taken off as soon as you can! It did indeed cause my husband problems when he applied for a new job, they would not accept the marked ss card or his one year extension letter with his expired 2 yr gc. It was a mess and I ended up calling the justice department. This happened about this time last year. You can see all my posts about it by looking up my name. Anyway, he went to the ss office with his marked ss card, letter and expired gc and they sent him another regular card in about a week's time. So now everything's good, except that damn long wait on the I-751.... whistling.gif

Thanks everyone. It looks like it's better to have her go to the SSN office to have it taken off. thanks. Sounds like I just need her to bring her 2 yr green card, since we haven't received the extension letter yet.

Keep in mind the SS office will take his old SS card. We applied for the new SS card while hubby was job hunting wacko.gif . Meanwhile he was offered a job...luckily, the employer waited patiently until his new card arrived. It took two weeks...the orginial card only took 4 days.

depending on different agencies, The agency that I went to did not take my old card.
I just filled in the form and got the card without restriction about 10 days later.

i have the same notation in my ss card but i never had problem. i was never asked to provide my ss card. dont it say in the card that you are not supposed to carry it with you neither use it as identification? it dont make sense changing it if nobody is asking for it. the important is that you have SS# to provide if your emoloyer will ask you. IF in case, ask why you have notation then show the supporting documents and if they wont accept, that is S****D! the NOA and green card from the immigration should be enough.

for me, i will not worry for that ss card.

The instant my wife and daughter got their temporary conditional PERMANENT resident cards, I ran over to our SS office with an on-line filled out forms, their passports, restricted SS cards, and original birth certificates, had them sign the applications first.

The reason why I went in, I don't take any BS some of these government workers like to hand out, just said, nicely, I am here to get permanent SS cards and handed them copies of the original documents showing the originals. This could have been done by mail just as easily, if you trust these important documents in the mail. I prefer being paranoid. They did not request the old cards, said they needed them anyway, they kept the same SS numbers they originally assigned, and in about a week we received the new cards.

They are getting about 15%, well more like 14.8% of your gross wages right off the top that is not even deductible as a tax, so should be more than happy to issue a card.

Now trying to get SS benefits, that is an entirely different story, if there are any benefits left.

They didn't take my husband's old card either. He doesn't carry his card around with him, but when applying for a job you need to give the employer the card because they make a copy of it for their files. So the last time he applied for a job he took all the necessary documents so they could see, touch and copy them. And then whatever he doesn't need to carry around with him goes into our lock box here at home. Even for me, the us citizen, when I've applied for a job they want to SEE the card, they're not going to believe you if you just spout off some number for them.
