Did anyone ask when they start paying you interest on your money?

They will pay daily compound interest after the latest date of the following:
  • May 31st
  • 31 days after your tax filing has been filed (received by CRA)
  • The day after you overpaid your taxes.

Oh sh1t, really? Are you serious? wow.gif then we should ALL be paid interest if it will take them as much as they say, right????? [[[[getting greedy]]]]]
Texanadian
That's right off the General Income Tax & Benefit Guide for Non Residents (aka the instruction book that comes with the tax forms)

It's the same timeline for residents of Canada as well.

It doesn't say what the interest rate will be. But if you file late and owe, it's 5% of the return owing and then 1% a month....So I'm guessing it will be 1% a month for people who've filed on time but are waiting an eternity for their refund.

I don't know how sneeky CRA is, but wouldn't it suck if they then charged 25% non resident tax on the interest we earn from having our tax refunds come late. blink.gif

I knew that they paid interest ... just didn't know exactly when they were required to do so. Thanks Texanadian. Looks like I'll receive my refund sometime in August lol.

I had an E-Pass security code mailed to me, and I checked on-line for my return yesterday. All it says is "received", no date, nothing. Will continue to monitor and let you know if I "see" anything".

Me too.. nothing but a confirmation that they got it. smile.gif

Ill send you a PM Liz...

I guess you can add me to the list. Sent it to them on April 22 and on the website it says it's received but not yet processed...

Like Emancipation I am expecting a HUGE amount smile.gif

I think its that choice on the article 217 or something like that and it has to do with the taxes paid on the EI....

Anyways tongue.gif

Mark me down as physically mailed 05/14/08 ... thnks ..

Got my CDN tax return.. refund deposited in my account.. crazy fast that was considering their timeline smile.gif It was accessed as of the 20th of May (dunno how that happened). The filing date they had for me was April 30th. It was $700.00 less than what I was expecting though.. UGH.

Just a quick observation. When I filed my exit return a few years back I included a letter requesting a full year's worth of tax credits rather than the pro-rated amounts to the date I left (which is listed as an option in the Emigrants Guide). I was allowed to do this since my total income for the whole year was Canadian based - I had no US based income. When I received my rebate, they had pro-rated the amount after all, and it was less than the amount should have been. I contacted my former MPs office who faxed me a permission authorization form which I filled out and faxed back, and they investigated for me. CRA asked me to re-send my 'letter' which I did through my MPs office, and I finally received the remainder of the rebate I was due.

For those who receive less than you expect, definitely investigate why and then, if necessary, don't hesitate to ask your former MPs for their assistance in getting the error corrected, if one was made.

OMG! I GOT MY RETURN TOO!!!
same day as Emancipation!
and the full amount I expected!
Texanadian
Yeah, I checked my status online and my return is HALF what it was supposed to be. My basic personal exemptions are 49% of the full year's worth of personal exemption (even though I moved at the end of August).

I filed for Section 217 with no US income too.

First EI, now this. *groan*. Thank goodness Texas doesn't have a state income tax. I'll update the thread as news progresses.
Emancipation
Does everyone have a "Surtax for non-residents and deemed residents of Canada" line?? I think that's where my 700$ went.. it appears that they charged me a sur tax for being a non-resident when the money I made in Canada was still as a resident (because I didn't receive my greencard until after my ei was finished.. GAH!

I want to add you to the list

Are people finding out about their returns from E-Pass? Money just deposited in your account? I'm just wondering if anyone has gotten paperwork, or a notice of assessment in the snail mail first. My account still shows received, and no date.
liz_legend 'n Ol
I checked on epass' website first then my back account..
no paper..
*Len*
WTF?!?!? mad.gif
I have not gotten squat protest6wz.gif...... hmmm....

Just phoned up the international tax phone number for "questions about my assessment" (1-800-267-5177)

Instantly got the message "Mailbox for inquiries is full. Please phone later."

Lovely. Juuuuuust lovely. First I got shafted on the 90 days of EI. Now Canada wants to give me back half my income tax return. I didn't have any US income in 2007 and didn't get my greencard until Feb 2008.
liz_legend 'n Ol
did you not do direct deposit Len?

I just had a random deposit in my CIBC bank account.. I then checked e-pass.. it was there, no paper yet. smile.gif

I can't remember when I mailed mine to CRA. But it was received April 30th. Assessed on May 12th. Information updated online to show my return on May 16th.

Was it March or April when you sent.. =)

You can update mine to IN LIMBO as I have to send in an amendment to my return.

It has been royally messed up. Instead of the $1100 I'm supposed to be getting back, they are saying I Owe them $500.

So hopefully I will eventually get my return! laughing.gif
*Len*
WTF? Why is CRA saying you folks owe? Doesn't make sense - same with Texanadian's apparent debt to them. Hmmm....

My dad helped me with my taxes and accidentally put my entire income as taxable. I filed under Section 217, so essentially, I'm being double taxed on my US income. $500 would be about right for what taxes I paid down here.

Also, they changed the amount of federal tax credits I had. Under Section A and B I do qualify for the full amount.

I just have to send a letter saying what I want amended, and hopefully soon get my return.

It would be nice to have that extra $1100 CDN, but the $4000US return and the $1200 Stimulus we received made up for it whistling.gif biggrin.gif

April.

To clarify, I don't owe them money. But my $2400 refund has been changed to a $1200 refund. The basic personal exemptions (let's assume for math purposes they're $9,000 for BC and $9,000 for Federal, have been reduced to $4500)

Going to try phoning again today and see what's up.
lynamon
Does anyone have anything new to add? hmmmmmmm?
E-Merce
I am American (my husband is the canadian citizen being petitioned). But I lived with him for awhile last month while on a study permit. It was a legal way for me to be able to stay there for an extended period of time and see how things went for us. Anyway, i've never filed my own taxes my parents have always done it for me and I know its dumb but i had NO idea I had to file for taxes there too. So mine were like 2 weeks late as I scrambled to get them done. On the guide it said that if thats the case it might just take longer to process. Has anyone had that experience and if so, was that all that happened? It just took longer?

Thanks,

Erin
Texanadian
As far as I know, if you didn't make $9,000 or more in Canada, you don't have to file. Of course that's for Canadian citizens living in Canada. Did you have any income in Canada?

Did you ever get in touch with them? ... I filed with a letter attached stating that I was claiming full credits as my income was from Canadian sources for the year .... just wondering if it's the same situation ...

Received my cheque June 3rd.

Am now in the process of appealing it.
Knobby_Wheezer
Refund in the bank via Direct Deposit on May 20. It was the whole refund that I was expecting, but they also required that I pay back the GST refunds that were also deposited when I was no longer in the country.

June 2 I got the snail assessment explaining what I owed. Not even a hundred bux. Considering that for my entire adult life I have always received refunds (a fringe benefit of being poor), it really doesn't bother me at all to pay back something that I truly owe. I left June 20 and so the July, October and January GST refunds were not really mine to keep. However, I did make a teensy bit of interest on them in the account before I had to give them back.
Mephys
Received 100% of the amount based on that article 217, deposited in my account on June 12. This is about 80% of my total refund that I should get. good.gif

I am still waiting for the federal and provincial refunds for the 4 months that I was still working in Montreal.
liz_legend 'n Ol
Got a letter from the Cdn Gov't asking for $181 in GSt

sigh
J&K
Got a letter asking for $62.19 for GST.

I just sent back the cheque they sent me last year that I never cashed biggrin.gif
Texanadian
I did the online dispute appeal on June 3rd. Haven't heard anything back from them. No status change on the online records. Another week or two and I'm going to phone them if nothing has changed.
Carlawarla
Just updating this thread. I've been waiting a little over 3 months, and I've heard nothing. Using my e-pass, all it says about my return is that it is "received". No date at all.

So apparently the program I used calculated me as a non-resident return, when I was consider a resident for part of last year. I have to file a T-1 Adjustment and hopefully see some of my money back!! Yipee!! more paperwork.. booo... sad.gif

*Len*
Uh oh. I had forgotten about this. 2 weeks ago I got an RFE (rofl.gif) from Canada Revenue. The morons wanted a copy of Bren's T2202 since I am claiming his education amounts. Geezuzfukinkrist. Can't they see it is in HIS return which was sent in the same package as mine and for which he got a notice of assessment saying his return was A-O-K???????????? mad.gif mad.gif mad.gif I sent the damn thing later that same week, and haven't heard from them since. NOT pleased.
Texanadian
Still no updates on the website. It's as if I haven't appealed at all. It's been over 2 weeks now. I'm phoning them up tomorrow.
Sprailenes
I sent in my taxes a day late and got them back a few days ago.

lynamon
Just thought that I'd update ... sent them the taxes on May 14th ... just showing up today that it was received.

Hey Carlawarla ... have you heard anything yet? ... Does anyone have anything new to add ... I'm still waiting sad.gif

A suggestion - you could contact your former MPs office and ask if they can help. I processed requests like that when I worked for the MP and also did it myself when CRC did not process the return correctly and I had to have them redo it (hehehe, I was right, too!). My MPs office faxed me a consent form, I faxed it back and they opened an enquiry with the International Tax Office. Success. Some MPs, however, are not as accommodating for former residents - but you can remind them you still have voting friends and/or family who live in their riding:-).

No lynamon, I've not heard a thing. I check online about twice a week, and it says nothing other than my return has been recieved. Not even a DATE that it was received! It's been about 14 weeks now.
michellea
Oh, I sent May 1 or 2.
Got my refund dated June 9 with an interest part that I have to now file a 2008 tax return for!!! GRRRRRR they could have kept their dollar!
