Interesting concept but not sure how this floats with the current TOS as written... thoughts? I am personally worried it could lead to an environment not reflecting the greater VJ values that we try to promote.

I think it could be fun as long as there are still some rules. It can't be an anything-goes or people will start posting pics of their private parts...and members should be able to kick somebody out by vote if they go overboard.

Look at some of the threads in off-topic. There are spiteful, hateful, racist, and downright vulgar posts that come up daily, some of which are eventually locked, but many of which are allowed to continue. I think this is a good thing. But I also think it's enough.

I believe there's room for more than just immigration-related information (hence my support for off-topic and political forums) but I also think a line needs to be drawn at some point. If we want to an "off-off-topic" forum, let's just put it under another domain, completely unaffiliated with VJ.

Have you ever participated in a non moderated forum where that has happened (the pictures of private parts)? I don't post on many boards, but this is the only actively moderated forum I have ever used and there is more friction here than on any of the sites I post at that aren't moderated. Of course, that could be related to ths site's primary function but I don't know.

It will not ruin my day if you don't take up this suggestion, I just thought it would be interesting.

The person who gets kicked out can make an appeal to the Capt. - he can look into it and see whether it was justified or not.

There'll be PMs going on behind the scenes egging people to vote "so and so" off. It'll turn into a clique war.

An over 18s, private forum has potential, but that rule would just turn it back into a High School.

I agree with mox, someone with the knowhow should start one on another domain. No holds barred! We can even create new usernames and see how long it takes us to figure out who everyone else is.

I think it was done before by someone here (can't remember who). No one signed up or seemed interested.

Oh was it him? Was it politics? Oops. I really brain farted that out of my head didn't I? Perhaps it was. All I know is that in general, VJers don't seem to like to transfer off site. There is this invisible thread that pulls them back, even if they say they hate it.

It's just the way of the world, I guess. Oh and it's an addiction.

Well, I set up a forum to see if anyone would join. Maybe if there's enough interest, then Ewok would consider making something like it a part of the site.

That was me. I started a forum for non-moderated discussion. VJ Troll, Lucky Strike, and a couple of other people joined and that was all.

I registered, but my activation key email has not come thru yet. I even requested it again. Yahoo sucks.

You should probably be aware of the mybb3.org terms of service. Specifically, prohibited content includes:

- Adult or Obscene material

- Depictions of Minors or Children (even minimal sexual context is not allowed)

I basically see the "Adult or Obscene material" and "Derogatory, Slanderous, Racial or Explicit Material" as deal breakers for a true "dungeon" forum. In fact, reading through the complete TOS, I think it's more restrictive in some ways than VJ. Especially the clause where they talk about having ownership of your board.

Yes they are pretty restrictive and not designed for the type of thing you are referring to. There is a degree of respectibility in not allowing a totally "anything goes" forum per say. I would consider a new forum here to catch the various things outside of the realm of current forums however we still have to follow the TOS. Their TOS does the same thing in a way. They can't have a porn ring or something running amuck.

Well, I don't envision it getting to porn ring status. We'll see how it goes. Maybe I'm wrong, but I see it more as a place where the "personal attack" rule doesn't apply.

I dunno about anyone else, but some of our... wackier members would probably benefit from a "shut your hole" forum

What I find amusing about restrictions, TOS, and the like is.....

My pagan message board is almost "anything goes". I own the domain, and I pay for a server that has no restrictions on what I upload to it. I also own (license) the message board software. With all of this freedom to post whatever.... there is never any trouble there. People can cuss all they want, they can say whatever about whomever they want....but they usually don't.

Rules and repression seem to produce more profanity and "naughtiness" than anarchy.



Except I still believe that what is said over there will be carried over to here. I can just see some people reporting to Ewok things that are said over there. Maybe I should have used a fake name. lol

Why not start your own website with these attributes? This is after all, a family based immigration website.

What you are suggesting, appears to be yet another sub OT forum, with an anything goes attitude.

Well since we want to keep the VJ "Family" atmosphere as best as possible I agree certain types of "craziness" should not be promoted here. However, that said, myself and a few other people tossed around the idea of an expat type site to cover some of the areas "beyond the visa". We never had the time to launch the site but I took a few hours and made the beginning of the site (at least a good start). Now in the future when you want to discuss things "beyond VJ" you will have a place to go. I will fully support the site so feel free to shoot me feedback over there . Any admin type issues (except in extreme circumstances) will be done seperately. These are two different sites and things that happen there will not have an effect here (or vice versa). Different audience and rules for each site, etc..

Just keep things civil and above water if you can . No TOS over there yet but keep the pRon, illegal things, etc off the site (i.e. common sense approach).

Pretty much. Basically a public venting of what would ordinarily be Private Messages over here.

Just curious why people have the need to publicly air their hate (#6 confirmed that I was right, I didn't really feel the need to check it out myself), though if people want to do so it's their problem not mine.

To be honest with you - it wasn't really "hate" and certainly not in a way that was intended to be taken particularly seriously.
