Oh yeah, these fiancee shops make some scratch. They've elevated the process of gouging Western men to a fine art.

Russians always quick to extort the foreigners!

Ilya,

How about just calling some local shops directly, speaking to them in Russian, and seeing if they would just process your order through a visa card by phone? That way, you might just get charged local rates, without any surcharges. $250 is sort of shocking.

I have used ASAP.RU with pretty good results. I think flower quality to more remote places is mixed but 11 roses for around $77 was not too bad. For $5 they'll take a photo of delivery. Repeat customers get 10% off which climbs to 15% over time.

My wife now says to not send flowers...send the money. The last few times the roses were small and did not last long. She can do better on the streets.

I have used ASAP.RU & Roses.RU in the past, before I started just sending Alla the money. I know the director and staff of Roses.RU as they are in Kazan'. I have also had some discussions with the director of ASAP.RU. Both are good at what they do, but overall I have been happier with Roses.RU. Quality and service over price.

In terms of flowers, what I have always been curious about is how does the vendor coordinate delivery in every possible town in Russia. The big website companies can't possibly have a flower shop in every town, nor a contract with at least one vendor in every town. I don't think they would personally send somebody to the city to put the order together. Anyone have any viable ideas?
The reason I ask, is because one could in theory just contact a local vendor in your fiancé's hometown, Western Union the money and have them do it directly at probably 1/3 the cost, but it takes a lot of trust and good faith on both parties.

Actually that's exactly what the larger vendors do--they coordinate with local flower shops. Flamingo is one of the largest, and they work with shops in almost every major city in Russia. Possibly Ukraine too, I don't know. The way the guy at Flamingo explained it to me is that every shop they work with has a book to work from. So if you order the "My heart belongs to you" (made up name) flower basket, they flip over to that page and assemble a basket that resembles the picture as closely as possible. "It's Russia," so I'm sure quality and accuracy vary from shop to shop, but that's how they do it.

Not a bad idea eekee! I tell you what I would bring.. pens! I couldn't believe how difficult it was to find a pen and some good writing paper.
I went to 5 stores till I found some and it was the full experience.. long lines, different lines for ordering and paying. I actually kind of enjoyed it only because I knew it wasn't a permanent thing, being the spoiled American that I am. I was just surprised, what with a thousand pens in my house, my car, at work.. wacko.gif

I have sent 11 roses in a vase . . . costs a little over $100.

Bought 11 roses from a flower shop in St. Petersburg . . . only 900 roubles ($37).

I guess we do pay a premium for home delivery, though.

Everyone probably already knows . . . but make sure it's an odd number!
