we recently received Follow to Join visas for the kids.
they are good for 6 months.
if, however, we are not quite ready for the kids by then, such as bigger house/apartment, more furniture, settled into new jobs, etc...can we request to have the Follow to Join visa dates extended for say another 6 months?
or do we run the risk of having to completely reapply again?
has anyone everhad a Follow to Join visa expiration date extended?

I don't believe this can be done, you will need to contact the consulate that issued the K-2 and ask.
If you needed more time, you should have waited to apply for the K-2 much closer to the 1 year anniversary date of K-1 issuance. You have up to 1 year after the K-1 is issued to apply for the K-2 follow to join.

Also, keep in mind that the child has another 6 months to leave the country after the visa is issued.

yes, we wanted to wait a few more months before the interview date at the embassy, so as to give us a few more months to prepare for the kids arrival.
however, the embassy set the interview date for march and we were afraid to change it since we were closing in on our one year anniversery from the issue date of the original K1 visa.
and yes, we do have the full six months to prepare. we are getting ready now.
my wife is finishing school soon and I am settling into a new job.
guess we'll just have to be ready within the Follow to Join visa dates.
we do not want to have to reapply all the paperwork again.

As far as I understand the K-2, you have just a one shot deal here. I don't think you can re-apply for a K-2 if any you may have to apply for other type of visa. I-130 comes to mind.
Good luck!!
