Well, I can't imagine too many people would be happy if their kid turned out to be a Hare Krishna. So people can put that if they really don't object to anything. (They probably just don't know enough about HKs.)

I am a pagan pantheist...modified atheism, hard to explain. I don't believe in the gods as literal beings, rather anthropomorphic symbols of the forces of nature, the nature of man.

I never really considered dating anyone who wasn't atheist/agnostic/pagan pantheist.

I don't care about the last one. If you had put maybe Scientologist in there there would be another answer...

I would consider dating (if I were single) anyone but a Muslim or Christian. Or a Scientologist. I'd prefer a pagan, athiest, agnostic, or a "don't care".

I would be upset if Jordan became a Hare Krishna, REALLY upset if he became a Christian, livid if he became a Muslim (because I'd know he was doing it just to be a git), and I'd probably have to beat him if he became Scientologist. In the end though, it's his decision. I wouldn't tell him what to do, but I don't have to like what he does....

You're right, I know nothing. But I took Mormon as my option (seeing as it was last on the list, and I had to choose something).

I'm agnostic, as is Alex...dating an atheist is completely fine. My mother is Catholic and married a Protestant - thought that as they shared the same belief (just a different denomination) that they'd be fine. Bzzt! Wrong. Her sister, who is also Catholic, married an atheist and he's been very understanding and supporting of her. Of course how you cope with another's religion depends upon the person, but I think it must be a little easier if you don't both have very strong beliefs.

I'd hope I'd find it within myself to support my child no matter what religion they were. So long as they grow to be respectful and tolerant of others I would not mind at all.

Hubster is an atheist and the thing that bugs him absolutely the most is that everyone else yells "respect my beliefs" ad nauseum and then they turn around and don't respect his right to non-belief and ramble on about bible says this, blah-di-blah.

I think it's just crazy how atheism is also connected with somehow having no morals.

Me, I'm agnostic with Buddhist leanings.

And if we were to have kids, which we aren't, I'd bring them up without religious education, allowing them to make that decision when they are an adult.

Being agnostic I think it's none of my buisiness what my children choose to believe in, if at all. I just hope they'll make up their OWN minds where they stand and not buy into other people's arguments out of convenience.
I feel the same way about my husband's beliefs (he's a christian who doesn't care for organized services) although I don't understand why he believes what he does because it doesn't make sense to me .
I will make sure my children knows about the major religions out there, and most importantly that people believe in different things and that's fine as long as you don't impose your beliefs on others. Religion is a big part of some peoples lives, and it having a clue about it can be good to get an understanding of other peoples' customs and culture.

they're minorities you can be without your parents having been them (i.e. your kid can't "turn out" to be black). i should have also thrown in republican and democrat, but it was late at night.

Hare Krishnas are cool people in India. Every HK I've met in the US has been a crazy nut. I hate what HK has turned into in the West, it's weird and creepy.

FWIW, I sometimes eat at a HK commune for lunch. The food is tasty, but I see a lot of Joey Isuzu (as the HK in Airplane) look-alikes.

I'm a Christian with some Pagan beliefs. I also love to learn from other religions so I guess I would be more ecumenical than anything. I think these days it's called interfaith. There are even things out there that I am agnostic about... Anyway.

I married an Atheist. It's awesome, I love talking religion with my husband, very interesting conversations.

If our hypothetical child came home one day and said they were anything on that list, I wouldn't even blink. It's up to the individual to find what's right for you. I would still love my baby just the same. The only thing I would tell this child is that it is very important to respect EVERYONE'S beliefs, no matter how different they are to yours. If anything, you could learn a thing or two from them.

I may have a problem with $cientology though. Dianetics was a science fiction book written by a science fiction author. I think I'd find it easier to swallow if they came home and said they were a Jedi.

I'd still love my baby no matter what though, even if they were gay. People take other people's business (their religion, political stance or sexuality) way too seriously. It makes about as much difference as whether you fold your toilet paper or crumple it.

I'm actually saddened that so many people would hate it if their child was gay. Maybe because I just don't give a stuff about that kind of thing I find it more "upsetting".

If my son came home and told me he was gay I'd be fine with it, absolutely fine. I swear I wouldn't even bat an eyelid. He's still my son, regardless of what choices he makes (or feels are made for him). I'd support him 100%.

My thoughts: You don't have to agree with what the other person believes, but you should respect their belief, independent if they're atheists, muslims, chirstians, etc.

I didn't vote because the last question has no ''I wouldn't mind any of the above'' option.

What does that even mean, respect their belief? Does that mean I have to think it's equally valid? Equally true? How many Christians would say "yes, I accept that atheists are just as likely to be right as we are"? Probably zero "good Christians" since it's part of their job to try to convert as many people as possible.

For me, respect just means live and let live.

We both agree, and I was picking up something discussed in another thread and putting it here where it's more appropriate.

I am agnostic as are most of my family... My Dad is a COMPLETE atheist. (No one hates him because of that though! It makes for some interesting discussions around the dinner table with various people, but certainly doesn't provoke hate)

My SO is Christian which I respect. I would never want to become Christian and he would never force it on me. It really isn't an issue for me what people want to believe in as long as they do not expect me to believe too.

If I have kids, I (and Chris) would never tell them what they 'should' believe in. We both believe that people should find their own way. If my child decided they wanted to become Muslim/Christian/Jewish/Buddhist or whatever, then so be it...

Wow, I can't imagine marrying a Christian. Not because Christians are so bad or anything, but just because our worldviews would be so incredibly different.

I don't care what anyone believes as long as they don't force it down my throat. Respect me and my right NOT to believe and I will respect you and your right TO believe.

I agree with that somewhat even though I am marrying a Christian... 'Some' Christians do try and ram their beliefs down your throat and some do have a completely different concept of the world to maybe you and me. Chris isn't like that. He is quite open about his beliefs and although he is a Christian, he certainly doesn't have his blinkers on. Different religions interest him and he would never critisise someone for not being 'Christian'

Chris doesn't actually go to church every Sunday either. He tends to go on special occasions etc (Which actually does make it little easier on me... I think if he did go every week, I would almost feel like I had to go, which I wouldn't like one bit...)

My 'Hare Krishna' vote was because 'none of the above' was available. Children must be allowed to make their own spiritual decisions.
