Would it be possible to code an option to disable signatures on a per-user basis? I.e., you can turn off my signature if you don't like it, but still display everyone else's sig.

I like seeing most people's signatures. Many people have good information in their sigs, and the timelines are interesting too. I don't even mind some of the larger images. But I absolutely can't stand the "meez" avatars. If you use them or like them, more power to you, I'm sure you're a very nice person. I don't hate you. But I hate your avatar. The animations are distracting and annoying.

Since I use Firefox, I have taken to just blocking images from the meez server in my browser. But recently some users have taken to moving their avatar images to services such as Photobucket. So now I have to block Photobucket, which I really don't want to have to do.

So if we could just turn off signatures on a per-user basis, that would be really nice. Is this doable?
*julez*
Great suggestion Mox! I would love it if signatures could be blocked per user. Like you, I often reference info in the signature, but find the animations to be particulalrly distracting. I really don't want to have to block all siggies due to the "sins of a few".

I heart.gif mox's siggie picture. Rings so true!

Great idea!

Very nice suggestion indeed and when looking of how this board is probably builld, it shouldn't be much of a problem to implement either yes.gif

two thumbs up from me

one: good.gif

two: good.gif

I hate hate HATE the meez as well (same disclaimer as moxy wink.gif ), plus some of those sigs with the MASSIVE photos of kids and people kissing and icky stuff like that are so annoying wink.gif

if we can't have the disable individual signature option (best option), can we at least have a limit on size of images in sigs? I realise that could create issues with tickers, but at least they're long and skinny...

*beginning to twitch*
Jeraly
Yeah - i really like the tickers as long as there aren't like 25 of them laughing.gif And I personally think the meez are kinda cool but I know that the animations can slow down my puter (at work anyway so that's not all that hard!!). I also know that it is possible to export smaller versions of meez (having looked into it biggrin.gif) so a size restriction could work...

Again - I kinda like piccies too but when they are so big you think you suddenly have a new desktop it can get annoying - especially when you have to scroll down for a week just to read the next post whistling.gif
Kazan' Tiger
There are people here with photos of each other kissing and other icky stuff? unsure.gif Ewww yuck! Well.. if they start wearing goofy hats or sprouting ears, I am sooo out of here!

I'm with the rest of you on those long siggy's tho! How about a limit to how much you can c&p into your reply as well? I've got arthritis in my middle finger from having to use the scroll button on my mouse so much! laughing.gif

your sig picture could probably be a little smaller and get the same effect, but I have to say I, too, have always loved the changing hats wink.gif
*julez*
So, Ewok, can this be done? I think it would be great!

Me too. I am particularly annoyed up to my eyebrows with those YouTube videos and really HUGE pics .
StillThePrettiest
if it does get done, I wonder how many signatures will get blocked by virtually everyone and therefore exist (however unwittingly) only for the amusement of the owner laughing.gif
lazylivn
I'm not a huge fan of the meez's either. I use firefox and it never occurred that I could block the pics...duh. I resized the pic in my siggy, made it smaller. Is there a better way to do the timeline thing? I think it's still taking too much space.
Kazan' Tiger
I'm not bothered by anyones signature. I love looking at them. Personally, I wish more people would post a true photo of themselves rather than Meez or others. I like to see who I am helping or talking to. Makes me feel more of a connection with a human over some fictional character. I just keep a finger on the "Page Down" key so I can scan quickly.

I think true photos are nice too, I just can't stand when they are all over the screen. Just keep it a decent size!

I kinda like my timeline and ticker and every now and then I go through and try and chop things out that I think aren't as necessary. I have the AOS section in there because I am impatient laughing.gif Once I have moved I will just get rid of the K-1 section or really slice it down - all the info is in my normal timeline anyway smile.gif

Another thing with the meez as well is that they don't have to be animated wink.gif They can be small pictures as well biggrin.gif

You can create an image file placing everything in tables. Put your pic on one side and your timeline beside it. Save it to a server and link to the image. wink.gif Just don't make your table so wide that people have to scroll left to right in order to view the entire thing (as i've seen others do wink.gif )

For the meez/utube/full page photo lovers reading this... Animated graphics and jpg/gif images saved at a higher resolution can really slow down older computers not to mention how long it takes to scroll past everything to get to the next entry. If you want to post images, why not post thumbnails linked to larger images stored on your own server to open in a new window?

I'm all for people sharing their personal photos and love stories...love it! But agree there isn't much need for 400x400px animated graphics of cartoon character's. At least having the option to turn some of it off would be nice but i'm not sure how you'd code that and someone like me could certainly get around it if I really wanted you to see my cartoon version of me. laughing.gif
Happy Bunny
It's funny cos the timelines annoy me...there is a button which links to the real timeline.

So I think this is a cracking idea.
*julez*
There seems to be interest in having such a feature, and yet Ewok has not bothered to comment one way or another. Sorry, I know your busy, *but*, you saw fit to quickly reply and make adjustments for a concern that was posted after this one. I know things don't happen overnight, (in most cases), but it would be courteous to indicate whether or not its even possible.
PlatyPius
I hate Meez. I would banish them from all of cyberspace, if I could. I would ban animated avatars, too. When I'm trying to read, some cartoon character jumping around on the screen is incredibly distracting. So, I usually just post something snarky and exit the page.

So what you're trying to say is that animated avatars are a good thing.

so do we need a facebook group? 'Meez belong in the Special Hell'? biggrin.gif

If you mean "special" as in "the hell where you have to wear helmets and ride the short bus," then yes, I do believe Meez belong in the "Special" Hell. biggrin.gif I believe this is the same Special Hell where pop-under ads, personal injury lawyers, and telemarketers end up also.

Sister Fracas
I think I'll put a funny hat on my avatar piccie.....

oh, right...I already have one...

When sig pics got so out of control, before Meez, I put them all on invisble. But I do look on them through a person's profile sometimes....just to see what I'm missing...
LoriLawless
Not answering the question, but I'll put down all I know.

It CAN be done on a forum, question is, can it be done on THIS forum powered by IP.Board

I know on others it can be added to the options under your user name.

Great suggestion! good.gif
Captain Ewok
I could custom code a mod to make it work but the question is if it would become "just one more thing" to maintain when upgrading the board and any potential server speed issues. How wide spread is the demand for such a mod?

Well...looking at the last 3 pages of the "Site Related Discussion" board, the only other threads with more posts are "We need a ROFL smiley" and "Site Hanging." smile.gif I'm the OP so I guess I'm biased, but it does seem to have drawn some interest.

I'd definitley use this option. An easier fix might be to just limit the space you have for sigs??

I would sacrifice 3 otters and a badger in your honour if you could find a way to banish or disable MEEZ from VJ.....

Maybe there would be a way of not reducing the bbcode allowance but the image size attached/used? Would that be easier to maintain?

And our momentum is gathering now that Ewok has said its doable!

I understand sigs can be blocked in totality, but I like some sigs, just not meez sigs and ones with huge images that force me to scroll.

I, for one of many, would be very grateful if this could be implemented.
Jeraly
But sometimes those with gigantic pics and things have useful and interesting things as well - if there was a size restriction or file size restriction on images then that would be much better... Chuck and Rose anyone? I have to scroll sideways to read every post sad.gif

I guess BBcode allowances could be reduced but it is difficult to link to useful sites or posts then as well...

I liked siggys too, and really didnt like the idea of turning them all off. Once I did though, I never went back. It's more of a *try it out and see if if fits* kind of thing. Heck, most of the times I post I turn off my own signature now as it dosent lend itself to the conversation.
Jeraly
I guess it prolly depends on where you post though - if you spend a lot of time in OT then you wouldn't perhaps need it so much (if you have a timeline for example) as you would if you were posting ina K-1/K-3/AOS etc forum
