Hi guys.

I recently received my K1 Packet 3 from US Consulate in Montreal.
For STEP ONE, it says to complete and return IMMEDIATELY enclosed Form DS-230 Part I and the Form DS-156 in duplicate.

So, this is what I should send back IMMEDIATELY:

DS-230 Part I
DS-156 (2 forms - electronically completed)
DS-156K (hand written? )

Is this all I send for the first step?

And then when I obtain all the documents on the checklist, I send the checklist ONLY to the US Consulate in Montreal? (STEP TWO)

Is this all right? Have I missed something?
Thanks!
melusine
you will probably be best to post in the canadian forum (and register yourself once you will send it all to liz for the stats)

i just completed it and i sent:
1x DS230PartI filled and signed
2x DS156 filled and signed
1x Checklist filled and signed (because i was alreeady ready but you can send it later if you are not certain to have all the docs in the next 2 weeks).

good luck !

would be great to create your timeline too !

Thanks for the fast reply.
It will probably take me 4-5 weeks to get everything done and collected on the checklist.
I need to get the police certificate from Croatia which might take some time.

Why does it say on DS-156K to attach the following documents, when these documents are actually not needed to be sent with DS-156K in step one, or are they?
- Birth certificate
- Police certficate
- Evidence of Financial support
- etc
melusine
i believe the ds156k is to bring just at the interview with all the documents needed for it !

Hi Angie007

Here are the things listed on my checklist:

1. Passport
2. Photographs
3. Medical Examination
4. Birth Certificate
5. Evidence in lieu of unobtainable birth certificate
6. Police certificates
7. Court and prison records
8. Military record
9. Divorce and death certificates
10. Evidence of support
11. Documents for accompanying child/children

Collecting all these things shouldn't be that hard, especially if you were born in Canada.
I will only need 6 things from this checklist, since some of them do not apply to me.

Sorry to hear that you still haven't received your Package 3.
I am sure you will get it soon.

Mine was sent on March 17, 2008 and I've received it on the March 25.

I will see about my time line.
I did not exactly collect all the dates smile.gif

i just found out that my mom doesn't have my certified birth certificate and that i will need to apply for one.

my question is - will i only need one copy of my certified birth certificate for the process?

i am not entirely sure of the process and i am concerned that the montreal consulate will put my birth certificate in the 'sealed package' that i am to take with me. when would i get this back? i will need my birth certificate to get married in the state of IL as soon as i move to the US. any advice would be appreciated.

thanks! star_smile.gif

ps. if any canadians could point me in the direction of some discussion on packet 3 and what might be specific to the montreal consulate, i'd greatly appreciate it. i looked but couldn't easily find anything... though i'll keep searching after dinner.

There is tons of information on Montreal in the Canadian forum (the link is in my signature) -- you may also want to take a look at the consulate reviews for information.

As far as the birth certificate is concerned, take the original and a copy to your interview. Give them the copy when asked for it -- if they need to take a look at the original, you'll have it with you. If you are worried about them taking your certified copy, order two and then you'll have the back-up for when you get married. However, I don't readily remember anyone going through K-1 having to leave a certified copy with Montreal.

To help you out a bit, I am going to move this to the Canadian forum. smile.gif

thanks cassie!

unfortunately ontario won't let you order more than one copy due to 'security concerns'. i have been told i can write a letter and mail it in with my application and they may or may not let me have more than one copy, i just wasn't sure if this would be necessary. if they deny me two, i'd have to start the process over again just to get one. oooh boy. glad i'm starting all this sooner than later! smile.gif

Finally discovered where the Canada forum was hiding! laughing.gif Yeah, sometimes I'm sharp and others I'm not. blush.gif

For the photographs, is it the passport type or a different format?

What do they mean by Evidence of support? Is that copies of the petitioner's income? Are originals needed?
melusine
i believe it's the I134 with evidences (paystub, letter from employers, tax return last 3 yrs)

Ok, thanks, it's what I was thinking, just wanted some confirmation. How about the pictures, is it the passport format?

Hi erinanddavid... Just curious, why do you say you are not allowed to order more than one birth certificate? I believe it was CBR who's fiance was told the same thing, but this is simply not true. We ordered Scott's online and right in the application is an option to get more than one copy.
BTW, you don't actually need more than one, as far as I know. But if it would ease your mind to have an extra copy (as it did for us), it is just a bit more moolah to order 2.

hi rae,

i looked at ordering them online (in january) but i believe it would only let me order one at a time. that is when i contacted the office of the registrar general. i was told, via email, "Due to security reasons, you are only entitled to 1 birth certificate of each size. You can write a letter to the Deputy Registrar General,Judi Hartman explaining the situation with an application for 2 certified certificates and a fee of $70.00.Your letter and application will be reviewed and you will be notified whether you can have 2 or not."

i did notice that the PDF of the form doesn't say anything about the number you can order. you could also fill it in so that you are requesting more than one... hmmm...

so, that's where i'm at. i think i'd be smart to get 2 if i can... just in case. i'll likely include a letter to the deputy registrar general as well as a copy of the email they sent to me, in addition to the form. thanks for your input! smile.gif
