ok so i have been told to amend my i-751.

the evidence they have that i sent off when myself and and my then ex wife when we filed jointly...they have that already in the file so can i just send them my divorce decree and a letter explaining i am amending my petition to just me and not jointly and ask them to add my divorce decree along with a few more bits of evidence to the existing petition?

No!

The jointly-filed petition will not fly for you. I think you are confusing the advice. You want the evidence that accompanied the jointly-filed petition to be amended to this self-petition, the waiver.
