No, not yet sad.gif He has had to get a new car... His is completely knackered.

He should have one by the time I get there though...

Haven't booked my flight as my funds are still rather low. Hopefully will have the money in the next couple of weeks though biggrin.gif I am hoping that flight is still there!! It was the other day...

Ooooh, you will have to give me your address by the way! I am sending out the wedding invitations in the next few weeks smile.gif

I'm going to Houston; fourth largest US city wink.gif

and sometimes I just like to have some knowledge, regardless of how immediately practical it's going to be to me... I've done a major international move before, so I know at least some of what's going to seem weird to me, and I just want to feel a little less ignorant

plus, I knew hearing all the different opinions would be fun smile.gif

Ah. Houston. Lucky you then. You'll have lots of shopping options. We live in the fourth largest city in our state (albeit a small state) and we don't have many of the listed US shops near us.

I can tell you that if you find TJMaxx over here, it's nearly identical to TKMaxx. I've even seen some of the same housewares on shelves in shops on both continents. And I always get Christmas crackers there each year.

My husband has found his search for things to be more 'item specific' rather than 'shop specific'. He's always foraging for US products (usually food) that 'work' for him. He's fond of Cabot cheeses that we get at WalMart and Sams Club. Giant Eagle Stores sometimes have a 'european' aisle and he gets Heinz beans and HP Sauce there. And believe it or not, BigLots has a rather nice selection of international foods, although those products are usually 'one-offs' so we buy all we can find when we run across something. As far as bread goes - my husband never has complained of US bread, but we also usually buy our bread from the deli section of the grocer and not the big 'bread aisle'.
StillThePrettiest
great tips, rebeccajo! thank you smile.gif

Thought I would fill this out...how fun, All the different opinions! These are mainly for St Louis area!!

Primark - Some cheap clothes store ... Maybe Wal-mart (Primarks clothes fall apart)
Waitrose - Whole Foods
M&S - Dierbergs
Tesco - A Super Walmart or Target - But they are still bigger and better in the states
Next - Lerner or NY & Co / Gap- Old Navy for the more casual clothes
Monsoon -
Wagamama -
Jessops - Creve Coeur Camera
Woolworths - Walgreens
Debenhams - Macy's Dillards
The Body Shop - The Body Shop but I prefer Bath and Body Works (and its cheaper)
Traidcraft - World Market
Threshers - Lucas Liqour
Med Kitchen -
Paperchase - Kinkos
Yo! Sushi - Tachibana

wow, so interesting! thanks for all replies thus far; keep 'em coming biggrin.gif

never thought Walmart would be put as an equivalent to Waitrose! I always see Waitrose as really posh, and Walmart as really scummy laughing.gif
mind you, I've never been inside one, and am not likely to, as my fiance boycotts them wink.gif

and a couple of people have put Next as Gap, but here we have both... I always see Gap as more for jeans and casual stuff, and Next one more rung up - some casual gear, but some more office type stuff (I got my favourite skirt there smile.gif )
and they have homewares... niiiiice wink.gif

so is Gap different in the US?

I think Gap is a step up from Next lol......

Jessops = Ritz Camera

We raided our UK stash & had some Walker's Cumberland Sausage and later Roast Gammon crisps last night. YUM!

I would have thought it was obvious that Wal-Mart = Asda. Same carrier bags (almost), same catchphrases, same company, same bloody George clothes...
StillThePrettiest
well, that fits; I've never been inside an Asda here, and don't intend to go inside a Wal-Mart there biggrin.gif

I have seen Lay Sensations here, but not in the same flavors as in the UK. They do have one that's pretty good called Sweet Cili & Sour Cream...not quite the same as the Thai Sweet Chili, but close enough!
SnowyTater
NO man, we don't get any of the awesome flavors you Brits get! It's so unfair and I really don't understand the marketing decisions on that either. I'm sure it'd sell very well in the US...I mean we're fatter than you are.

I have so many "fixes" I need whenever I visit Scotland xD Gotta get my curry and my steak pie and my walker's and my hobnobs out biggrin.gif I think I'm gonna miss much more about UK food than my British SO will tongue.gif

I've yet to find the courage to try all the little cheap bags of taters that are like...12p or something, like monster munch and pickle flavored god knows and stuff like that tongue.gif
We DO get pickled flavor chips here sometimes, I've seen, but haven't tried them. Sounds pretty awful. And we did a few years back start getting kettle chips (try Mrs. Vickie's jalapeno ones ohmy.gif) so mmmm we're progressing smile.gif

For some reason there's never any Ribena to be found in a british store here, either. And cheese. We don't get many cheeseboards at all sad.gif Sigh.
LeahJane
Pringles do a 'Select' range chips now which are gourmet and they are like Walkers Sensations... Actually they are better!

Most places have a Worldmarket or English store for the things you can't live without, you just need to Google or ask around. I live in Dayton and we have one so the rest of you should be fine smile.gif

I'm sure I read someone posting here that Target was the equiv to Topshop.......I have no idea what Topshop they were shopping in but it's not even close!

H&M is over here though in some places.

I agree with the earlier post, Boots is a distant memory when you have Sephora!
Jeraly
I think we get those pringles as well but aren't they still reconstituted potato stuff? I want real potatoes!! biggrin.gif

Actually I haven't seen new baby potatoes in the store when I have been looking at fresh produce as well... russet is about the only potato I could find and you can't even make decent wedges with them... dunno how they will hold up for roasters...

I miss Red Leicester cheese. sad.gif

Since hubby found me a proper cheese grater I'm happier - I could never get used to that "dusty" already grated stuff. The only cheese I kind of like here is Monterey Jack, but it's all pretty bland really.
Jeraly
Hmm I remember buying grated cheese and it had a great big lump of mould in it... kinda put me off a bit I must say...
rkl57
I think I may have mentioned my business idea of becoming an importer of fine British cheeses? I would offer delivery on motorcycle (LA area only) and be called Cheesey Rider.
