Good morning,

My I-751 is pending approval. I have received the letter stating work authorization is extended for 1 year. I have a social security card with a stamp on it that says "valid for employment only with approval" (or something to that effect). I have continued to work at my job within a large corporation with no problem. In other words, things are fine.

However--- I am beginning to look for a career change. I am quite concerned that a potential new employer would be hesitant to take my SS card / expired green card / 1 yr letter as valid proof. They could be concerned that I can only work for a limited time, for example.

-is there some way to update my SS card and get one that does not have the "under authorization only" stamp?
-has anyone had any experience dealing with human resources depts that is in the same position as me?

Had no problem at my current job because I had my valid green card.

thanks for any input!

I had same problem. on Thursday 28th Feb 2008, I went to SS OFfice with expired green card and NOA (extension Letter) to get new card that dont have that writing on it. Yesterday, after exactly 7 days, i got my New Social Security Card. so dont worry. Take your paper and apply for replacement card. Good Luck

You're screwed, basically.

You should have changed your SS card while your green card was still valid.

Interesting. Thank-you, I will head down to the SS Office and see what comes of it.

Good luck, hope you get it.

I guess it depends on how friendly the guys are at your local SS Office.

My husband had the same problem. He finally got around to going to the SS office to request a replacement card. All he took was his passport with I-551 stamp in it. His I-751 NOA 1 yr. extension letter expired on Jan. 4, 2008. He went to the SS office on Feb. 28 and the new card arrived in the mail on March 6th. As for his employer, when his letter was about to expire they were fine with the stamp as well.

We had some difficulties with the SS Office. They didn't want to give us an unrestricted card as the woman stated my card was unrestricted even with the stamp. It took some time and showing this person a section of the SSA Rules from their website, before she would process our request. At the time I had my GC, Passport (with I-551 stamp) and original SS card with the "not valid for work without DHS authorization" on it...

Looks like it could be the luck of the draw with some of the SSA employees/offices. We made a point of getting the unrestricted as soon as possible and pressing the issue that I was in fact entitled to it.

Good Luck!
