Canīt you have it done in the USA? Could be cheaper over here... Or they wonīt do your medical for interview without it? And are you sure you werenīt vaccinated when you were a kid or something?
Jeraly
No - HPV is a really new thing - it's crazy - it's only recommended for girls under 12 and is not mandatory in the USA yet I have to get it because I am under 27. It is actually ILLEGAL to have if you are 27 or older!!! Because it is so new only one company sells the stuff and so they can pretty much charge what they want sad.gif

I would love to get it done in the US but I am not sure if I will be allowed or not... I think I should be because I only need it for AOS... does that sound about right to anyone else?

You're talking about Gardasil, right? There's been quite a bit of discussion on this in the Canadian forum b/c they apparently *are* requiring it (do some searches & you will find more info). But it is a series of 3 shots, I believe. I would normally think it would never be cheaper to do something health related in the US, but what you mentioned sounds absolutely crazy. I'd see about getting it done here for AOS. That is a crazy price.

It's to protect against cervical cancer, I believe. And yeah, it is not mandatory here, but apparently they are making people immigrating get it. Crazy!!
rae_and_scott
more info:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gardasil

That page says the cost is $360.
Scott and Marta
OK, well noone ever mentioned it in front of me so I guess I am just too old for that now since I am over 27 now tongue.gif Yeah I know a few USC people whose parents decided for them not to get any vaccination and so now they are like vaccine free...so why can USCs choose and we have to be dozed with everything? But my vaccinations were ok, so I got none.

I dont think HPV is a required vaccination for any visa. In fact for k-1/3 you dont have to get any as its a non-immigrant visa. The vacinations are required for AOS.

It's on the US Embassy website sad.gif I think I can get away with getting it in the US for $360 like Rob said... Ģ399 for a vaccine is crazy... I am just going to make sure I take print outs of everything that says K-1 is a non-immigrant visa and all the requirements so if they try to screw with me I can just wave it all in their face and at least have something to refer to!!

Holy $hit! I had no idea it was that expensive. And I didn't know it was mandatory. We have to do this for Sasha's AOS??
Jeraly
Not too sure - I don't know if it is dependent on the beneficiary's country or not... I know that the UK wants it and it seems so does Canada but it is only for women under 27 - at least in the UK...

If she's under 27 it sounds like you will.
But I would think if you have health insurance it might be able to cover part of it.

I'm pretty sure it is the US telling you guys you have to get it; not dependent on the country. It is not that the UK or Canada wants it, it is that the Drs who do US immigration work in those countries are telling people they will need it. Though I could be wrong on that. I would suggest doing a "gardasil" search here on VJ.

Ok - one point my mum made is if we are due to turn 27 before the course of injections for HPV is over, do we have to start it? Apparently it is illegal for anyone over 27 to have it...

The other thing Jeremy found out is that it prolly won't be covered by health insurance as it is a "choice" and not mandatory in the US... only if you want to live there it seems... he has sent an e-mail to the DOS - he was really annoyed...

Not sure to the answer of your question, but I would say it's definitely worth looking into. If you can avoid having to get the vaccine and having to pay for it, do it. ... But didn't you just turn 26 pretty recently? So I'm not sure if you woulc be able to get out of it.
As for health insurance, I think that it just would totally depend on what kind of coverage you have. It can vary so much; who you have insurance with, what they cover, what the copays are, etc. But even without any coverage, US$360 is half of what you're looking at paying in pounds, so I guess that would be your worst case scenario.
One more thing: I wouldn't say it is "illegal" to get the shot over 27; they just won't give it to you if you are over 27. You won't get arrested or anything. wink.gif But I'm not really sure what the particulars are in terms of how far spread out the 3 shots are and if you are 26 going on 27 and how that would all pan out. There must be an answer somewhere, though, this is the internet!! tongue.gif

It seems like a long time ago but I know it hasn't been....Nice to hear from all the July filers....

we went packet 3 in on March 11....hopefully will hear something in the next few days....

Good Luck to all July filers!!!!!!!!!

Nice to see you back again Charlene smile.gif

Rae/Scott - I don't understand why they are saying it is needed for the K-1 even though it is a non-immigrant visa...

I can't even find the link I need now - grr - they have a great immigrant visa section for the London Embassy... non-immigrant section is sh*te...

All I need is a page that says that non-immigrant visas are not required to fulfill the the vaccination requirements until AOS then I will be fine... mad.gif I can't believe they are putting us through so much stress at the 12th hour sad.gif

I don't understand it either Aly. The only thing I can guess is that for once they are being kind of smart: K visas, while technically non-immigrant, are essiantially immigrant. What I mean is that anyone who successfully completes the K visa does then immigrate, so in terms of the medical it makes sense to treat Kers as immigrants, doesn't it?
Well, maybe not, b/c look at all this confusion. wacko.gif
You know what, it will work itself out, somehow. It's not like one vaccine is going to hold up the process, and there are a lot of others trying to wade through this confusion. I mean, the biggest headache of the stupid shots seems to be the pricetag, right? It does suck to have extra stress at the end... but it's still better to be closer to the end, IMO. yes.gif
If you find a definitive page saying you don't need the shot for the interview (which I think is the case but I know what you're looking for is proof), post it for us to see, would ya?
Jeraly

Jeremy dug it out for me smile.gif

That's what you should print out and wave in the Dr's face at your medical!

For those who don't feel like reading it:

Because a fiancé(e) visa permits the holder to immigrate to the U.S. and marry an American citizen shortly after arrival in the United States, the fiancé(e) must meet some of the requirements of an immigrant visa.
...
United States immigration law requires immigrant visa applicants to obtain certain vaccinations prior to the issuance of an immigrant visa. Panel physicians who conduct medical examinations of immigrant visa applicants are required to verify that immigrant visa applicants have met the vaccination requirements. See IV Vaccination Requirements for the list of required vaccinations and additional information.

As a fiancé(e), you are not required to fulfill this requirement at the time of your medical examination for a fiancé(e) visa. However, you may want to do so. These vaccinations are required when you adjust status following your marriage.

Awesome, thanks Aly (and Jeremy) wink.gif
Jeraly
I am defo printing it - I have the URL in my inbox now courtesy of Jeremy so I can wave it in everyone's face... I might get it tatooed across my face as well just to make the point...

In fact that would prolly be cheaper than the HPV vac laughing.gif
rae_and_scott
I'm sure it would! laughing.gif
Arrta
I'm so glad that in the Philippines 90% of the vaccinations are actually given to you at the medical exam and are included in the cost of the exam. The only one we will have to worry about once she is here is the TD vaccine.

I want to include this information for others (and save you much frustration) but if you have questions about your case and it seems like things are moving slowly calling this number in Washington DC at the National Visa Center 1-202-663-1225 with your fiance's "Case Number LND**********" plus which Embassy you are working through they are able to give you helpful information about what is going on.

I had to call today because we turned in our Packet 3 on Feb. 1st and had not heard another thing from them. This Washingtom DC number I called said we were "not qualified" because we had not sent part 2 of DS 230. The instruction did not state that part 2 was needed but we will send this happily.

I just wonder how long we would have waited to hear from London Embassy about "not qualified" had I not called the Washington DC number as it was almost 2 months since we sent packet 3 in, I'm sorry but I feel a bit angry right now.
CBR
sunsi, you have every right to feel angry! That's just ridiculous that they let people wait like that. Thank you for the information. I hope things start moving again for you real quick!
