I am a retired American waiting to file DCF in Bogota Colombia. They tell me I have to live in Colombia 6 months to do this. Still think it will be faster then filing in the States. If I have to wait two months to file, is there anything I could be getting done in the mean time to file my I-130īs for wife and kids. I would like to have my children in school in America by August or Sept. (Not that my government really cares) I know I am being optomistic.

Indeed you need to be a legal resident of the consular district for at least 6 months (usually NOT on a tourist visa).
You can, in the meanwhile, gather your tax trasncripts for the past years, your birth certificate (same for your spouse and kids), and pertinent documents that show bona fide marriage. Also, get a hold of medical -vaccination- records for the intending immigrant; and make sure you can still prove domicile in the US (even when you're living in beautiful Colombia) by being registered to vote, filing taxes, holding a US driver's license, bank accounts, etc.
Good luck!

Here's hoping the political unrest doesn't escalate down there. helpsmilie.gif
