Actually, I am so glad I gate-crashed the Russian community because Blues Fairy blows every single stereotype about Russian's that has been spouted in this thread (largely by American males) completely out of the water.
Not only is she Russian, she's beautiful, intelligent, eloquent and not the least bit arrogant. The argument should really have ceased the moment she posted.
On what grounds? Simply because she's not being arrogant here? There are many areas of her life that she can be arrogant other than VJ, remember about the "real world" outside of VJ and how we are all on here only virtually?
And to Blues Fairy and everyone else, I'm not saying you are arrogant right now, I'm simply saying the possibility exists that you could be and there is most likely an area of your life that you are arrogant in. And does that change my definition of a generalization? Like the phases of the moon?
AKDiver, please enlighten me on why a generalization must specify a certain number or be limited to less than all or else it's a stereotype. Is it not possible for people to assume that someone can be an exception to a generalization or stereotype? Or does that by it's very definition kill the stereotype? Does it kill a generalization too? I would think that intelligent people would be able to accept that there can be stereotypes and/or generaliztions without being all-inclusive.
Deductive inference based on common traits. What's that?

i want to see what his logic is for the corresponding phenomenon of american men searching for foreign brides.
We've been here before, but it's always fun to revisit. AKDiver had a nice diatribe (listed out numerically, no less!) a few posts ago.
What I would really like to know is what you, as an American woman think about the guys who paruse the pages of these websites trying to find a foreign bride. And why it is that they themselves are searching for a Western husband? Why there are 48,000 Russian women on websites there, but no men. (There are a few men, didn't mean to generalize! But it is amazingly one-sided. Why is that?)

More power to you. That doesn't excuse you for lashing at a whole group of people, their customs and beliefs (which from your posts seems were kind of 18 century attitudes, it true at all). I don't need to go online to a Russian or any other dating site -- I am happily married to a man who not only respects my heritage and myself as a woman, an academic and a person; but is also quite aware of the diversity of peoples and cultures that cohabit in this country we call the United States; and the richness that brings to this country.
****edited for class****
Peace out and let's this thread die once and for all.
Why is an excuse needed to lash at a whole group of people, their customs and beliefs? What's more American than that?
And dare I say your husband, although I'm sure respects your heritage and you as a woman, academic, person, etc. probably respects you more when you're not yelling at him about disagreeing with you over your heritage, being a woman, academic, person, etc. and has learned to bite his tongue when the subjects arise.

If we're running out of stuff to talk about, I humbly submit that all Texans are wankers. Discuss.
Now this is an excellent way to keep the thread going! Right on, mox!
QUOTE(kcmetzy @ Feb 27 2008, 10:04 PM)

Yes, but you must be talking about NATIVE Texans.... Does the childs birth in the state of Texas automatically cause them to be a wanker?
These comments tick met off!
TEXAS ROCKS! I wouldn't live in any other state...ever!
Chuck Norris IS Walker TEXAS Ranger.

If a child is born in Texas, isn't he automatically a NATIVE wanker? I saw a whole episode of King of the Hill dedicated strictly to this topic. Hank was very upset that his parents never told him he was actually born in Oklahoma. He couldn't even get that wanker-identifying license plate.
And is Chuck Norris' portrayal of Wanker Texas Ranger supposed to be some kind of an argument? I would think if you were going to present a counterpoint it would at least hold some weight. I mean, come on, we're talking about the same guy that does the Total Gym commercials. Granted, Chuck Norris is a bad-@$$, but just because he plays a wanker on TV doesn't make him one in real life. Give the man a little respect.

This is more fun than reality TV and getting up there with "High Stakes Poker" Bobalouie are you going to let AKDiver trash talk your fellow Oklahoman Chuck Norris? There is a rumor floating around that the folks at the TSC have to be native Texans, dropped out of high school or did not complete their special ed classes, have a tendency to sleep on the job, get a bonus for not speaking Spanish, and a further bonus if their parents still claim to be brother and sister. Please, please someone start a new post, perhaps about contracting syphillis and whether to tell your spouse about it or not, and certainly not admitting to carousing with amorous farm animals at midnight during a full moon.
I knew there was a reason they didn't call me back. (TSC, not the clinic...... although maybe I should give them a call.)
