Good Morning VJers,
I am bringing to the USA the laptop my fiance gave me. (Manila - Kansas City). He said it is better to mail it because the custom might "seize" it at the point of entry...Is that true? Has anyone here had a hard time at the POE because of bringing a laptop? (the laptop is not pirated smile.gifsmile.gifsmile.gif ) Is it better to mail it? i am sure it's way expensive.

Needing your insights and comments.

I brought my laptop through the POE at Toronto Canada and had no questions asked. Not sure about in Manila, but as long as its registered and not pirated i don't see there being any problem. You could always try and call border services in Manila to ask.

I think there is no reason for the custom personnel to seize your laptop at POE unless they have very valid reason/s to do so. You can bring your laptop with you (hand carry it) and if they need to check it up at POE, let them do it as long as you understand and you know what it is for. But I guess you'll be fine. Check more info in this before your departure. I have a laptop too & I'll take it with me on my flight to the US. Goodluck!

the only time there was a hassle with bringing a laptop through customs was when they thought my hubby was coming to Canada to work and not just to visit me. Fair assumption to make, seeing as he is a computer programmer. wink.gif

We've taken our laptop every time we've travelled to Canada -- never been asked to show paperwork. Just had to power it up if/when asked.

thank u all for the reply.smile.gifsmile.gif

I think it should be fine knowing we brought my laptop going to phil and they didnt ask me about it in San fran as our poe. Plus we also brought a bunch of gadgets like big cameras, psp, and wires for our electronics LOL. Hey happy trip!
estadia

smile.gif we have traveled back and forth to India and never had a problem coming or going with lap top we just hand carry it and take it out of its case when going thru xray......customs have never questioned us about it......hope this helps smile.gif
DeeZee
Bringing a laptop is not a problem at all. No need to worry about it! Just hand carry it at the airport. I haven't encountered being questioned about bringing one and I've been doing that for awhile. It has to go through x-ray though.
shining_angel
Thank you Maya(ronmay), estadia, deezee for the replies. I dont want to stress myself thinking about my laptop being held in the POE. smile.gif

I don't see any problem in POE.as soon as your laptop is Original everything well be fine.I have a NoteBook and i'm planning to bring it with me in the States wink.gif If they want to check it,i will give them with all my heart for aslong as they will give it back to me after laughing.gif
wahenie19
bringing a laptop with as a carry on will not be a problem, HOWEVER, if you try mailing the laptop then you will run the risk of never receiving it. I strongly recommend you do not mail the laptop. Some things seem to get "lost" on its way out.
Dave+Rose
Hi,

I am bringing my notebook to the US too when the time comes and I am planning to handcarry it along with the software programs (CD) that I downloaded on it just to be ready just in case I will be asked laughing.gif laughing.gif laughing.gif
dj1206
My fiance and I travelled to USA together. He didn't have any problems at all with the laptop. In HK and NY POE, he was just asked to remove the laptop from its bag for the xray, that's all.
shining_angel
Thank You Dear VJers for the responses . wahenie is right..if i mail it, it could get lost in the mail sad.gif so the best choice is to hand carry it. Thank you again ....it's really great to belong to VJ.smile.gifsmile.gif

just make sure you don't bring w/ you any pirated stuffs. please read this info that i got from a friend who works for the philippine customs. goodluck.

Important information regarding "pasalubong" or "padalas" from the
Philippines .

Please share this with your friends and relatives.

Please be informed of the recent travel advisory to the United States
. I thank Tarde for this piece of information. However, not only
pirated VCDs/DVDs are on the hot list. Customs officials are also
looking into fake bags like Louis Vuitton, Coach, etc. Please be
informed that the American Association of Publishers (AAP) has also
alerted the American customs officers to check out for pirated books.
This information;was given to me by Patricia Judd of the AAP. Please
warn all nursing graduates who plan to take the NCLEX and CGF exams
in the States not to bring in these pirated books because there will
be a penalty of automatic deportation as violation of intellectual
property rights. If you know anyone going from the Philippines and
coming back to the USA , with "pasalubongs" and "padalas," please
read this important enclosed advisory from the American Embassy in
Manila . Please share with your friends. Just a friendly reminder: if
you have plans of going to the U.S. , please take precautionary
measures on all "padalas," especially those containing fake/pirated
compact discs/DVDs. US Embassy employees have been given an advisory
that as US Gov't employees, we should abide by the U.S.laws,
including Intellectual Property Rights (anti-piracy) laws. As an
additional incentive, the Consular Section recently received a report
that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) searched the bag of a
Filipino entering the U.S. on NW 72 in Detroit . During the search,
70-80 compact discs, 30-40 empty DVD jackets and 10-20 DVDs were
found. Since the travelers were not American citizens, their visas
were canceled and they returned to the Philippines . If they had been
Americans, they could have been subject to br & gt arrest and
criminal prosecution in addition to civil fines and penalties. Please
remember even ONE pirated item can jeopardize your trip. Also, the
fingerprinting system has successfully been instituted in all port of
entries. I suggest you bring extra identification cards in addition
to your passport to facilitate your entry in the US Immigration. I
hope this is helpful to you.

Thanks and regards

yea i think CFO reminded us about bringing fakes/counterfiet products. like dont eve bring any xerox/photo copy from any book coz its under piracy law... even my school doesnt allow or encourage us to photo copy anymore lol but gosh books are expensive blink.gif
shining_angel
To answer my question about the laptop . NO they didn't asked me to turn the laptop on, I brought with me some review materials in CD (kinopya lang), I also have some photocopies of music sheets but they didn't check it too. BUT...my big handbag was searched thoroughly...as in one by one - lotion, etc, etc, etc. I remember the lady in CFO told us not to bring polvoron because it's no longer allowed but i was able to bring polvoron. the lady who searched my hand bag didnt say anything about it smile.gif
i brought with me my own nail clippers and nipper - they all go in the check in luggage.

I saw on the news this week that they were relaxing restrictions on laptops at airports.

I am just curious.
Why would they seize it ?
I see no reason for that assumption.

I have brought my laptop and never had any problem. But I have read that some people have been hassled. Sometimes at your POE they will turn on your laptop to see what is in there.

Do a search US customs and laptops
