Did anyone else have a problem? I took my passport to get my SSN after I got the temporary I-551 stamp and they took my info and said they would have to clear it with USCIS. How long does this usually take?

I guess I should just get used to waiting with this entire process though.

Standard procedure... you are not the first

It can take up to 7 -8 weeks for the USCIS to enter your info in their system. Once they do, the SSA office can check your status with them and issue you a number. Keep calling because the SSA can be very slow to follow through as we had to learn about this ourselves.

This is standard procedure, SSA will confirm immigrations status with USCIS.

It is recommended to give USCIS 2 weeks or so to update the database used by SSA to confirm status.

We had the same issue. It took exactly one month for us.

Okay.

Can I get a denial letter from them? Because the only thing stopping me from getting a state drivers license right now is this. But the DMV said that all I would need is a denial letter if I can't get the SSN.

I need insurance to drive, I can't get insurance without all of this stuff.

I have to get to work on tuesday. Do I risk it and just go and wait the process out?

I thought I would have my license but now thats being held up because I don't have an SSN and my Canalien (wink.gif) registration number won't suffice.

It took 3 days for the SSA to get the electronic verification done... after more than 2 weeks, I received the card in the mail.

I have heard of other people driving, I am sure I am not the only person to drive without insurance or a valid state license. I wouldn't want to do it this way, but its not my fault if I am caught up in the bureaucracy.

Do you think a cop would buy that?? laughing.gif

No, your application is still pending. They only issue the SSA-L676 notice when the application has been denied.

If the I-551 card shows up while you are still waiting for SSA to verify your status, I would go back in and have them run another initial verification request using the I-551 card. The amount of time can be days, weeks or months to verify your status. However, people with permanent resident status seem to have less problems than people with non immigrant status.

Yea...I figured there's not much that can be done. I should be used to waiting by now.

Oh well. C'est la vie.

Iwas told exactly the same thing when I applied for mine. "Could be up to 6-8 weeks, depending how long it takes to get your info verified"... My card was here in 14 days.

I really hope so. I would like to be able to drive legally.

In the mean time...stay off the road peoples. wink.gif jk jk
