My lawyer ( yes, that one ) keeps telling me that he gets no better and
no worse info from USCIS than I can get myself, in other words lawyers
don't get special access. Is that true or is he pulling my leg as always?

Only thing a lawyer has is a good access to your bank account, lol I dont believe they have any special "ins" unless they personally know someone, but on the whole, they don't.

No - and if they did, I think more people would enlist their services for just that ITEM alone - but no they do not.
Good Luck on your journey

Let me add that before I found VJ I had no clue that one could go through
all of this without using a lawyer. It was always clear to me that a lawyer's
services were mandatory. That's how years ago I got my green card, that's
how I got my citizenship. Always used an Immigration lawyer. Boy, was I
stupid. And boy did I pay through my nose.
