Having a very difficult time with the VJ site this morning. Keeps hanging and/or I keep getting the website unavailable message..... more than what's normally usual. Might try back again later. (Hopefully, this post doesn't get lost too.)

mm, I never seem to have that many problems with the site being slow

, maybe on a rare occasion...

Feb 26 2008, 10:37 PM
I think the issue is as simple as the server backup being run during peak hours. I have contacted the NOC to see if they can provide a solution.

Typically any spikes are for a short period.

The spike is happening in the time frame ofo 9:30am to 10am EST most days. We are working with the Network people to resolve it

I just got confirmation from the NOC that they have identified the issue and have made a change that should help. The main issue was the daily backups that were being run caused disk IO problems and slowed the server. They have reduced the speed of the backup to reduce disk IO and hopefully that will help the slowdowns during backups (which happen in the mornings). I would prefer to move the backup time to the early morning (EST time) but that is not possible.

Seems to be pretty snappy at the moment. Just thought I'd throw in another data point.

Yeah the other item that slows things down is the internal search engine for the forums. The main search at the top of the forums does not cause slow downs so when applicable it is a good choice.
Lot of slow page drawing this morning, but no IPC errors yet.

Having non-stop IPS errors for the past 15 mins. Surprised I'm actually here at the moment. I very rarely use the search engine, due to the number of errors. Yesterday I had not used it at all. Hoping this post doesn't disappear.

In the next 48 hours there will be some changes behind the scenes to the server that should hopefully resolve the ongoing issues.

We made a change tonight that should potentially help a lot. Any feedback on speed (good or bad) is very welcome. Monday - Friday will be the days that we should focus on the most since the site will be loaded the highest amounts on those days.

Yeah we actually moved the entire site to a new physical server to test out if it is faster. =) Everything is moved now!

Mar 8 2008, 09:54 AM
Wow. The site is moving at warp speed! That's awesome. I tried to log on while you were moving it to another server and noticed it was down. My first thought was that it had totally crashed because it seemed well on its way to doing so. Maybe a notice that the site will be down for maintenance work could be posted at times when the work is scheduled? Just a thought. Thanks for the improvements, Captain.
Yeah, it's screaming along now. We'll see how it does on Mon. Thanks!
