My fiance is in the UK, and I was wondering if I should get married in the U.S. or in the U.K. What would be easier for me to apply to become a permenant resident in the U.K.
Right now I am living in the U.S., and can I apply now?
What is the whole procedure for me to become a permenant resident in the U.K.?

Please advise.

P.S. Ignore my signature, as I am a different person.

Might want to make a new account, that sig could be a little confusing! smile.gif

Sorry I don't know the specifics, but I've seen a few folk mention the US -> UK process, which is probably the opposite of what most of us are trying to achieve on this forum. I'm fairly sure the UK visa process is a lot quicker for some reason.

For reasons that it's too early on monday morning for me to explain, the easiest option is for you to get married in the US, and then apply to come to the UK permanently. This saves on number of applications needed and therefore money to pay for the applications, and all around hassle.

The application process is a one submission process, usually approved or denied in less than 6 weeks. More info here:

read all of that, and if you have any further questions, you might be better off checking out a forum thats dedicated to people travelling the other direction, this forum is for people moving TO the US.

All the best,

It is much easier to move to the UK after marriage in the US. I am from the US and married a UKC, we married in California and I moved to the UK 4 months later. The process to get a spousal visa to move here is much much easier and faster than the US.

You will not have permanent residence though, your first visa is good for 2 years. Then you apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain. After I think 3 years you can apply for citizenship. You should do your research on this though.

A friend of mine did this from India, took 3 weeks, but then he was not in a hurry.

Where do I apply? That site has an option to visit the UK, study in the UK, or to do business in the U.K.

Actually the British Embassy website redirects you to the UKVisa Site when you click on 'Apply now' anyway, and you should at some point end up here:

Unlike the US system, you don't really need to know the names of the forms your filling out etc. You just tick the boxes that are relavent to you, and the online form adjusts accordingly.

When I did it in July, at the end of the form, you are asked if you want to file your evidence papers by mail or in person. And also pay now or later. I recommend that you choose pay later. That way if you see any mistakes on your form you can just submit another one. Then only reference the correct application number with the evidence that you send in, or when you go in person to give in your evidence.

The one thing about the UK application that is harder than the US one, is that they aren't as specific about the evidence that they require from you. I think it's worth checking out the many forums dedicated to moving to the UK, to get peoples personal accounts of the evidence you send in. One of the major things is that they not only look for 'something' with both of your names on it as proof of your relationship, but a number of things from a variety of sources.
