I just found a site that will ship canadian items throughout the world. OMG thank goodness! Now I can get my Kraft pizza mix, smarties and aero bars. There is a god!

Actually if you really do like those Smarties, just go to any British Import store and they should have them considering Smarties are actually a British candy that Canada picked up on. So if you live in a fairly big city there should be a handfull of British specialty stores around to at least get those...
F1Belle
There are also sellers on ebay who do nothing but send Canadian favourites to the USA.
gemilina
Owww I will have to check out ebay. I know shipping costs are quite expensive so anything to keep the costs down.

Whoooo Hooo! I found crumpets! Hehehe - I had to go to Locust Grove (about 15 miles south of us) today to renew my Driver's License since it expires on my birthday in June (an incredibly easy and efficient operation - I told them they could give lessons to USCIS - they laughed and agreed!) and stopped in at Ingles on the way back to pick up some groceries. In the freezer section I found crumpets! I bought 8 packages, heheheehe. The Ingles down the road from where I live don't have them and while Locust Grove isn't too far away, I know that I now have a good supply in the freezer at home! Yay - I know what tonight's snack is going to be. Crumpets! Heheheheh (ok - I'm getting carried away but I have been missing them since I arrived here more than 4 years ago - although I did order in one lot from California which were really good). What was also nice is they only cost $1.99 a package as well - and no shipping costs, hehehe.

Also, Aero bars and Crunchies are available at World Markets.

hey I just found this site.... HFCS Free Food List
Reba
Since Aldi opened up a store here in town, I've been shopping there quite a lot. (and saving more than 50% off my grocery bills!). They have a few items that are HFCS free (but proportionately speaking, not very many).

Fit & Light Ranch Salad Dressing (all their other dressings have HFCS, even the other Fit & Light!)
Sweet & Salty, Trail Mix Fruit & Nut, and Oat & Honey granola bars (the Fit & Light ones have HFCS believe it or not!)
Their knock-off Frosted Mini Wheats, Cheerios and a couple other cereals do not have it.
And their imported chocolates do not have it. Generally speaking HFCS is a US phenomenon, so imported goods won't have it, unless they are made specifically for the US market (there area few food items made in Canada that are made for import to the US that have HFCS in them, but the Canadian version doesn't have it).

You just have to really be careful and read every label. Most organic foods won't have it in there (I'd hazard a guess and say all organics even!) because HFCS is so over processed, it can no longer be considered organic, even if it came from organic corn. But, considering the whole point to HFCS is for food manufacturers to save money, why would they bother with organic corn? It would cost them too much tongue.gif

btw, only a very few of Newman's Own products contain HFCS. The list linked above only had their organic sandwich cookies listed for some reason.

Thanks, Marilyn!

I've bookmarked the site and printed off a copy of the list to add to my grocery coupons - now I can check directly for certain products. Oh, btw - it mentions Annie's products . . . anyone looking for some good macaroni and cheese, try Annie's products. They don't taste like Kraft dinner if that is what you are looking for, but they are really good and cheesy. Well worth paying the extra price at some stores (Ingles) but often carried at our local Big Lots for 99 cents a box!

I have taken the liberty of creating a spreadsheet detailing a list of Canadian products unavailable in the US and have added comparables where I could. This list was compiled using input from the Heinz Ketchup thread, as well as from my own experience. Please feel free to let me know of any additions or amendments, as this is a work in progress.

Grocery Items Spreadsheet
What a great idea! Nathan's hot dogs are my new favourite! Love them.

You can't get Cheez Whiz here?

What about real maple syrup? My mom always sends my husband those giant jugs of real Canadian maple syrup. It's like gold to him.

Also, the Safeway here has real Canadian back bacon and Canadian peameal bacon. I actually noticed that almost all of the bacon products they sell are from Canada. Harris Teeter here has a good Canadian bacon selection also.

Smarties is another one to add - Smarties here aren't the chocolate candies like we get in Canada and the UK. Americans call those sour little candies that come in a roll (like Rockets) Smarties.

Aero is another chocolate bar that you can't get here - I learned that when my husband asked me what kind of chocolate bar I wanted from the store. I said "Aero" and he said "Huh?"
Actually, one CAN get Aero and Smarties in the US--as long as you happen to do some shopping at desi stores, you can get the ORIGINAL (Brit) versions of these.

(as you are in DC area, this is viable option)

other items to add on the not available generally list:
  • unsweetened shredded coconut (you can get it even in 7-11 in Canada, but only in ethnic stores in US--true even as of 1971)
  • quark cheese (I saw it at Chamblee Farmer's Market in Atlanta area, but not in most grocers), available easily in Canada, MUCH easier to spread (even when cold) than cream cheese (even when "room temped")
  • Rosebuds (small version of chocolate stars)

I've added your items to the list. I've never heard of quark cheese, though. Interesting.

And, ugh. I've had a terrible time trying to find an Indian grocer here. The only one close to me is just horrible. Barely anything on their shelves and way overpriced. But there seems to be a pretty good selection over in Orlando, so I'll have to plan a day trip. Getting tired of having to wait to go to Canada for my supplies and a samosa/pakora. crying.gif

Is there a "Trader Joe's" near you? This chain is known to carry some Indian entrées, under its own brand-name.

Well, you CAN get chili powder, turmeric powder and mustard seeds at regular grocer such as Publix (though this approach is costly).

For making samosas, here are some steps:
  • sauté onions, finely-chopped vegetables (and/or finely-ground meats)
  • thaw frozen pastry dough (if you can find it--I haven't looked for it in US) and roll it
  • using cookie-cutter, make some circles of the rolled dough
  • wrap the circles around sautéed veggies/meats, closing them as shells
  • put on baking sheet and bake at 400oF for 30-40 minutes
  • serve with sauces (chutneys, if you can find them; but salsa also works quite well)

Yep, a couple of the basic spices are available. Haven't found any cardamom, coriander or cumin seeds yet... but I'll keep looking. For some reason they don't sell frozen pastry dough here. Just the pre-formed pies; but not the tartlets. (But that's a whole other story. lol) My favourite sauce is tamarind. luv.gif I also like mixing the tamarind sauce with plum sauce (if one should find some) for dipping chicken fingers. Mmmmm. I'm getting hungry. laughing.gif
Kathryn41
Check for a store that sells international supplies and you will find cumin, coriander and cardamon there. If you still can't find any, let me know and I will send some to you. I can find all of those in our local grocery stores since we have a large Indian population in the Atlanta area that those spices are pretty readily available. We actually love to make cardamom coffee so I am going to have to buy some more cardamom pods soon myself (we grind the cardamom pods and cloves in with the coffee beans and then let drip through - wonderful!)

I found frozen pastry shells today at the Commissary at Ft. Gillam - first time I have found them here. I haven't found frozen pastry dough anywhere either so I just use the frozen pie shells if I don't want to make my own.

To update Krikit: please add "Gainsborough Pastry Dough" to your spreadsheet--I browsed the sites of Giant and Safeway (which I despise, as a Calgarian), and checked the frozen aisle in Food Lion, and it wasn't in any of them. sad.gif

(they had pastry sheets and filo dough--neither of which will work for samosas)

I can not find a real RYE bread here, or VH honey garlic sauce, or eatmore candy bars... my kids bring them out to me when they come.
Kathryn41
I've been able to find real rye and real pumpernickel, but they are from German type bakeries and in the specialty breads sections of the grocery store. Oh, I love eatmore bars! Haven't thought of them for a while.

Reba
Watkins has a bunch of those spices you're looking for (unfortunately, not all, but maybe sometime for seasonal specials). In both an Organic, and a "regular" version. Plus, I think the Tropical Salsa would be good with samosas yes.gif

I found a really nice pumpernickle bread at Aldi's. I dunno if they have a real rye bread or not, I haven't looked. I did find a fairly decent rye bread mix at our local healthfood store (I think Ingles has the same too). I did it in the bread machine, but it'll go either way. If you don't want to make your own, there's a brand that I can't remember the name of at the mo, (Natural...Nature's Own...something...maybe?) but they have a "Real Jewish Rye" bread that's pretty good too. If your local grocery has an organic section, you might find it there. For a couple extra bucks of course, but some cravings are just worth it! wink.gif

Most of the grocery stores here carry ready made pie crusts, (w/out pie pan) but they're not in the frozen food section. I usually find them over by the eggs in the refrigerator/dairy section. If you're making samosas or perogies er summat, you can just cut them with cookie cutters or a drinking glass, same as you would with a "regular" ready-made dough.
