I was just thinking about the whole 'automatically receiving your Social Security Card' item that you check off on the DS-230. I don't think I have seen anyone post over the last few months who actually received a card without showing up at the social security office.

Which made me think of something else. I applied for my U.S. passport in April of 2006, it was issued in February of 2007. At the same time, in dealing with the consulate here in Calgary, I was given an application for a Social Security card, which I did fill out etc (as did my Mother - she applied at the same time and got her passport a couple of months later)..

When I received my passport in the mail I also received a letter and my returned SSN application saying they no longer issued social security cards this way and I must show up in person to apply at the consulate (which I did and it was duly issued a month later), my Mom, who received her passport almost a year earlier got the same returned application and letter.

So anyway! It just made me think about that option on the DS-230 - maybe it isn't really an option and maybe it's not even worthwhile ticking it off as maybe it's just not ever done anymore. Personally we didn't select it.

It worked for us. Hubby got his SSC within 9 days of POE.

I guess I was specifically wondering about Canadians, should have mentioned that (was hoping the topic wouldn't get moved out of the Canada forum) - I have never seen a Canadian say they got the card automatically.

I originally posted this in the Canada forum but it was moved - I just meant that I hadn't heard of any Canadian getting the card automatically - glad to hear that someone did get it as indicated on the form

Apples and oranges. I believe at one time a parent could apply for the SSN as part of registering the overseas birth of a U.S. citizen child. The other is an alien age 18 or older that has been issued an immigrant visa and checked off on the DS-230 that they wanted to be assigned an SSN.

I know Enumeration At Entry is still possible through the DS-230, not sure about the other.

Generally, people age 12 or older must apply in person at an SSA office for an original SSN and card. People that live in an area that has a Card Center regardless of age must apply in person at a Card Center, for original and replacement card applications.

Plus 99% of the time people post here when things go wrong, not when it works like it's supposed to work.
