Well, I think Bassi and I wouldn't have been good friends if I just met him walking down the street. He looks gangsta....hat pulled down low serious mean look on his face ALL the time. But then he smiles and the sun rises. I wish he would smile all the time. I never saw a pic with him smiling until I was in it with him. Isn't that wierd? I don't have a physical type really. If you lined my exes up you wouldn't find a common denominator except for me. Until you spoke to them and got to know them. Bassi is my intellectual/spiritual type. I've never dated a man I wasn't friends with first. I hope my daughters follow suit. But who knows what they'll do.....

We had ice rain and sleet on Saturday but yesterday and today has been warm and pleasant. It'll probably snow soon. Don't want to get too comfortable. Hard to believe it's already February.
Boaz
Here in the beautiful south we are expecting a high of 64, followed by a high of 74 for tomorrow. But like Zee said - don't want to get too comfortable.

I think I should be getting it today or tomorrow. UPS tried to deliver a package to me from amazon.com on Friday but I was not home. I highly doubt I am going to be home today when they deliver so I am going to have to wait until tomorrow.

They abound in the midwest because of available land. There is a small community not far from me and more moving up into Canada. As the community grows they need more land, so they move and start new settlements. I didn't even know there was a group not far from me in GA. They'd been there for about 50 years or so.

There are a lot of Africans in Iowa, especially Sudanese. All my Ghanaian friends I met here live or went to school in Iowa.

I wonder why?

Edit: Sorry, I wonder why that happens. The mayor of my city had a program where he travelled and recruited Guyanese immigrants to move to this city. They got help with home loans and starting business. So there is a large population of Guyanese (mostly indian) in this area. But I know clearly why. I wonder how Africans ended up in Iowa and in concentrations specific to countries, such as the example you used of Sudan.

That is interesting. I wonder how the Sudanese first starting going there. Shoot now the belll has rung and my break is over. sad.gif

I really have no idea. I have a friend whose family moved there from Sudan. I think her dad got a job there and then a few years later the rest of her family came to the US. I think that the things that draw them to Iowa are probably the universities and job opportunities. For many, one parent comes and then the rest join later and then they just stay. Its pretty quiet and safe and a good place to raise a family.

It's easier when there is a community of support. Well, it's curious. Where in Iowa is this? I suppose within the vicinity of a large city.

This is in Iowa City, IA...literally in the middle of nowhere. The biggest thing in the town is the University of Iowa and the Oral B factory. I think the reason that there may be so many Sudanese is that there is a pretty strong Arab community in Cedar Rapids which is 30 minutes away but that is nothing close to a large city either. Come to think of it, there is also a big Bosnian population there too.

I use TurboTax every year cause my credit union gives it to members for free online. Next year is even easier cause they remember all your stuff and you pretty much have to put in the simple changes. Although this year, we'll all have our SO become our hubbies and have to file as married. Whoo Hoo!!

Sounds like you have to go the Timbuktu, Iowa to find any africans. Where do you live in Iowa? Hey chispas, there are lots of black people in Iowa. Whuddathunkit? Were you driving through and your car broke down?
UNO...
I live in the quad cities, Iowa side.
chispas
Lol. I was afraid to drive through there and Wyoming. My girlfriends have family out there and invited me along. They forgot to mention that there weren't any darkies in the town and I don't use out houses in the winter time nor do I dress well enough for their winters. I was treated nicely, just stared at a lot by older people because. I didn't fit into the nice African American box because I have a slight (cough cough) accent to top it off. I don't like potatoes, dry corn, greasy gravy nor big slabs of beef either so it was interesting. I forgot to add the beer. Don't drink that either. So I was not invited back. LOL

Definitely a separate thread. This one is a written to allow for free comments. Definitely don't want free comments. I hope people don't give us a hard time about the book club again. I wish we could give it a secret password for book club members only.

You should get it soon. I think you ordered a little after me and I got mine yesterday.

So I guess a new thread then.

For whoever starts the thread I think there should be a disclaimer in the beginning saying that we would appreciate comments from readers and non-readers alike but we want to keep the thread on topic to the subjects discussed in the book. We are just using the book as a way to bring up topice we feel relevant to the discussion and may agree or disagree with what others say but we want to keep it a warm, repectful and friendly environment for everyone.

I flipped through my book last night and I already have some comments about what we will be discussing.

Who else is waiting for the book?
